Clinton says Trump's praise of Russia raises 'national security issues'
4:07:01 PMadekunle

Hillary Clinton on Sunday sharply criticized Donald Trump over his “absolute allegiance” to Russian policy aims, saying it raised both “national security issues” and new doubts about his temperament.

Trump, her Republican rival in the race for the White House, responded defiantly, saying that he had “no relationship” with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and had never met nor spoken to him by phone, but that “if our country got along with Russia, that would be a great thing.”

This file photo combination shows Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton(L) on April 4, 2016 and Republican challenger Donald Trump on February 16, 2016. November's US presidential election is taking shape: Republican billionaire Donald Trump and Democratic power player Hillary Clinton look set for an ugly battle for the White House after a bruising primary season. Trump knocked out his only serious challenger Ted Cruz on May 3, 2016 in Indiana's key primary, winning 53 percent of the vote against 37 percent for the Texas senator, who raised the white flag and surprisingly pulled out of the race. / AFP PHOTO

He said in an ABC interview that he was not about to disavow it if Putin praised him as a “genius” (some Russian speakers say “colorful” was a better translation of the word).

But perhaps further fanning controversy, Trump added that as president he would at least consider acknowledging Russian sovereignty over Crimea, the Ukrainian territory that Russia annexed in 2014 in the face of widespread international condemnation.

“The people of Crimea, from what I’ve heard, would rather be with Russia,” Trump said.

He said, however, that he was not involved in Republicans’ softening of their platform language to remove a call to provide Ukraine with lethal weaponry.

The dispute over Russia is part of a broader disagreement over US engagement abroad, as Trump argues that a weakened America must retrench and demand greater contributions from its allies, while Clinton asserts that decades-old US commitments to foreign partners must be maintained.

– Backlash over emails –

Clinton, in her comments, was responding on “Fox News Sunday” to allegations of Russian involvement in leaks of Democratic Party emails that embarrassed her on the eve of the just-ended Democratic national convention.

As that convention was underway, Trump urged Russia to find and release several thousand emails that disappeared from Clinton’s private server while she was secretary of state.

“Russia, if you’re listening,” Trump said then, “I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will be mightily rewarded by our press.”

That call, of a sort nearly unprecedented in US presidential politics, drew sharp rebukes from Democrats and some Republicans.

US cybersecurity experts said it raised questions about whether Russia had attempted to influence the American campaign in Trump’s favor. Leaked emails published by WikiLeaks revealed the distrust of some key Democratic leaders of Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s former rival for the Democratic nod.

Trump’s seeming encouragement of Russian hacking, Clinton told Fox, “raises issues about Russian influence in our election.”

“And for Trump to both encourage that and to praise Putin despite what appears to be a deliberate effort to try to affect the election, I think, raises national security issues.”

– ‘Not temperamentally fit’ –

When an interviewer noted that Trump had claimed he was being sarcastic, Clinton replied: “If you take the encouragement that Russians hack into email accounts, if you take his quite excessive praise for Putin, his absolute allegiance to a lot of Russian wish-list foreign policy issues,” it suggests that “he is not temperamentally fit to be president and commander-in-chief.”

Trump had earlier unnerved NATO member nations by questioning the long absolute US commitment to defend any member of the Atlantic alliance should it be attacked by Russia.

In an interview with The New York Times just before the Republican convention, Trump said that if Russia attacked NATO member nations he would decide whether to come to their assistance only if he decided that they had "fulfilled their obligations to us.”

Trump has also said he might withdraw US troops from European and Asian countries if they failed to pay more for American protection.

"We are going to take care of this country first," he told The Times, "before we worry about everyone else in the world."

Slain soldier's father calls Trump a 'black soul'
4:01:19 PMadekunle

The father of a slain Muslim American soldier assailed Donald Trump as a “black soul” Sunday in an impassioned exchange with the Republican presidential candidate over the qualities required in a US leader.

Khizr Khan electrified the Democratic convention last week with a tribute to his fallen son that ended with a steely rebuke that Trump had “sacrificed nothing” for his country.

Trump
Trump

Trump defended himself in an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” insisting he had made “a lot of sacrifices” while suggesting that Khan’s wife, who stood silent on the convention stage as her husband spoke, had not been allowed to talk.

But Khan shot back in interviews on US television news shows, while his wife Ghazala explained in a Washington Post op-ed that she had been too grief-stricken to speak.

“Without saying a thing, all the world, all America, felt my pain,” she wrote. “Whoever saw me felt me in their heart.”

Their son, US Army captain Humayun Khan, was killed in Iraq in 2004 in a roadside explosion at the gates of a military compound.

Khan, speaking on CNN, accused Trump of lacking the moral compass and empathy needed to be the country’s leader.

“He is a black soul. And this is totally unfit for the leadership of this beautiful country,” Khan said.

Trump has courted controversy and sparked outrage during his drive for the US presidency with disparaging remarks against immigrants, Muslims and women.

His call to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the United States has drawn criticism even from leaders of his own party.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, implicitly criticized Trump in a statement Sunday. He called Captain Khan “an American hero,” praised the sacrifices of families like the Khans, and said he agreed with them that “a travel ban on all members of a religion is simply contrary to American values.”

Yet Trump, despite his high negatives and penchant for controversy, has attracted a fervent following among working class white males, and he stands near even with Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the polls.

In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Clinton took aim at Trump’s positive view of Russian President Vladimir Putin and accused him of “absolute allegiance” to Moscow’s foreign policy objectives.

Trump responded defiantly, saying in the ABC interview that he had “no relationship” with Putin, but that “if our country got along with Russia, that would be a great thing.”

The jousting on policy was overshadowed, however, by the emotional back and forth between Trump and Khan.

“I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. I’ve had tremendous success. I think I’ve done a lot,” Trump said about his sacrifices.

Trump questioned whether Clinton had been behind Khan’s address, which the naturalized Pakistani immigrant said he wrote with his wife Ghazala.

“Who wrote that? Did Hillary’s script writers write it?” Trump said in the interview.

“If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say,” Trump said, adding: “Maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say.”

– ‘A dark heart’ –

Khan said he had invited his wife to speak, but she declined, knowing that she’d become too emotional.

He said that running for president does not entitle Trump “to disrespect” the relatives of soldiers killed in combat.

“Shame on him! Shame on his family!” he told ABC News. “He is not worthy of our comments. He has no decency. He is void of decency, he has a dark heart.”

In a statement late on Saturday, Trump praised Captain Khan as “a hero to our country,” adding, “we should honor all who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe.”

But Trump took issue with Khan’s convention night speech, including his claim that the billionaire candidate had never read the US constitution.

“While I feel deeply for the loss of his son, Mr Khan, who has never met me, has no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the constitution” and “say many other inaccurate things,” Trump said.

Clinton criticized Trump’s treatment of the Khans during a campaign stop at a church in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Mr. Khan paid the ultimate sacrifice in his family, didn’t he?” she told the African American congregation. “And what has he heard from Donald Trump? Nothing but insults, degrading comments about Muslims, a total misunderstanding of what made our country great — religious freedom, religious liberty.

“It’s enshrined in our constitution, as Mr. Khan knows, because he’s actually read it.

Daycare centres for senior citizens in Ogun
3:55:57 PMTony Chinonso

By Josephine Agbonkhese

Although Nigerians typically argue against the placement of aged parents under any form of external care, the spate of loneliness and neglect suffered by senior citizens in the country is becoming a cause for concern. Consequently, in a deliberate attempt to make old-age enjoyable, no fewer than six daycare centres have been billed for set-up by Care Companions Limited for senior citizens in different parts of Ogun State.

Monarchs donating lands for the non-profit project include HRM Dr. Joseph Adeogun Oguntona Ogunjobi, Oba Igbore, Orile Obafemi Owode LGA; HRH Oba Kolawole Sowemimo, Afin Olu Owode Egba; HRM Oba Fatai Akamo, Olu Of Itori Land; HRH Femi Ogunleye, Oba of Akinale; Oba Dosumu Olowu of Owu and the Alake of Egbaland, HRM Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III.

According to Mrs Elizabeth Akin-Abiola, Director, Care Companions Limited, the centres would take-off with temporary structures due to the urgent need to engage senior citizens with people of like-minds, and address the growing problem of depression amongst them; while fund is being raised for permanent structures.

Speaking while addressing a Council of Obas' meeting at the palace of the Alake of Egbaland, in company of her team of professionals, Abiola emphasized the need to bring total respite to senior citizens across the country, adding that Care Companions' services in Ogun and its environs would not be limited to providing daycare centre.

"Our services will include the provision of homecare services, live-in care, escort care services, domestic services, medication services, personal care services (including hygiene services), to mention but few, which will however not be non-profit.

These commercial services, she explained, would help address youth unemployment in the state, adding that with a minimum of O'level certification plus an unquestionable character and ability to render care services, interested youths in the state would be recruited, trained and placed by Care Companions.

Responding on behalf of the council of Obas, HRM Adedotun Gbadebo said the initiative was timely due to its double benefits- respite for senior citizens and jobs for youths. "Loneliness is bad for anyone. I remember how my aged father would look out through his window in want of somebody to chitchat with during the day when everyone had gone out. Whoever passed by, he would invite to come have lunch with him because he knew the process  would afford him someone to spend time with and feel very, very happy."

PDP Chairmanship: My case with EFCC will not affect me - Dokpesi
3:53:34 PMIkenna

High Chief Raymond Dokpesi has said that the corruption charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, will not affect his ambition to become the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stating that he is innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

Dokpesi
Dokpesi

He said the charges cannot be used by the federal government or the All Progressives Congress, APC, to hoodwink him if he is elected as the chairman of the opposition, PDP.

He said this on Sunday during his meeting with delegates from Kwara state at the party’s secretariat in Ilorin.

“The case is in court and I don’t want to comment on it but I will not join APC or be a stooge because of it. I respect Buhari as the president of Nigeria but what he is doing now is not different from what he did as a military head of state. He locked up Nigerians for 200 years, some 150 years. As the Chief of staff of Gongola state, I was locked up and my charge was that I held political office,” he said.

“If you are an hotelier and someone spent three days in your hotel and paid for services rendered but days later, DSS came to arrest you that the money the client paid you was from illegal proceed from CBN. ….. Let me stop there as the judge will decide,” he said of his current charges.

On Sheriff, he said governors and other stakeholders are reaching out to him for reconciliation and peace.

Meanwhile, the Kwara state PDP chairman, Barrister Akogun Oyedepo, praised Dokpesi and assured him of support, stating that he had set a standard for others to follow.

“We have not seen any other candidate that can match your credentials. We will go with you because you are a pioneer. PDP that is almost crumbling needs someone like you. APC is jittery already because of Dokpesi credentials. We need to return the party to the people and that is what you are doing by meeting delegates. We have heard you and we will make you accountable for your words,” he said.

Other PDP stakeholders in the state, including Senator Idris Haliru Gunu and Senator Ajadi Makanjuola hailed his determination to lead the party.

Budget scandal: FG may withdraw Dogara's security details
3:35:15 PMadekunle

By Emman Ovuakporie and Johnbosco Agbakwuru
ABUJA – INDICATIONS emerged Sunday that security details of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara may be withdrawn on the orders of the Federal Government over the controversy surrounding the 2016 budget.

It was also gathered that a document linking the Majority leader of the House, Femi Gbajabimila with constituency projects worth over N4 billion which is domiciled in Osun and Niger States against the initial N1.8 billion constituency projects allocated to him was in circulation.

This is just as the secretariat of the House Appropriation Committee was on Sunday still under the watch of about four security operatives.

Security sources hinted that the withdrawal of security aides to the principal officers allegedly fingered in the budget brouhaha was ensure that there was no obstruction on the course of investigations.

Investigations revealed that the security personnel that were guiding the appropriation committee secretariat were not the regular operatives from the National Assembly.

Meanwhile about 27 civil society organisations have raised the alarm of alleged conspiracy with external forces against the leadership of the House of Representatives, saying that if nothing was done to apply caution, it would threaten the democracy in the country.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the national coordinator of Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko alongside other 26 CSOs, said “It is disingenuous for the sacked Appropriation committee chairman, Abdulmumin Jibrin to make any claims of exposing massive corruption in the House, accusing speaker Yakubu Dogara of moves to personally smuggle N30bn into 2016 budget.”

He said that the understanding of the powers of the National Assembly seems to say that the legislature is constitutionally empowered to vet proposed budget since these elected officials were not rubber stamps of the president.

Ambode leads as Nigeria's top performing governor- Poll
3:19:07 PMTony Chinonso

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode is leading other Governors in the poll organised by the African Leadership Magazine to determine Nigeria’s top performing Governor.

The poll, tagged ‘Good Governance Polls for Nigeria's Top Performing Governor’ started two weeks ago with Governor Ambode maintaining the lead with 36.1 percent of the total votes cast.

Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano is closely trailing Governor Ambode with 25 percent.

The Poll, according to its organisers, was designed by the group as part of its strategic engagement tool to monitor performance and gauge the mood of the electorates in Nigeria in line with its objective of providing credible information and support to leaders in Nigeria and Africa at large.

An overwhelming 35 percent popularity rating for Governor Ambode, among other governors, clearly shows his popularity as he continues to deliver good governance, promoting infrastructural development and people-centred policies that better the lives of the people of Lagos.

Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun is in the third place with 8.8 percent, while Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike is in the fourth position with 7.9 percent of the total vote casts.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai sits in the fifth position with 5 percent, while as at press time, voting is still ongoing and is expected to close in the next four days.

Sheriff says Anenih must answer query
3:11:59 PMadekunle

By BEN AGANDE, ABUJA.
Factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has said that the former chairman of the board of trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih can only be readmitted into the board if he answered the query issued to him for alleged anti party activities.

Alimodu-Sheriff
Alimodu-Sheriff

Senator sheriff was responding to a letter written by the secretary of the National caretaker committee, senator Ben Obi readmitting chief Anenih into the Board of trustees party.

Senator Obi had in the letter said: "With a view, to finally clearing all issues relating to this matter and based on your request to meet with the current Caretaker Committee, and the agreed meeting which took place on July 13, 2016, the Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, wishes to thank you for appearing before it to finally clear all issues relating to this matter.

"Having heard from you, and made some consultations, the Caretaker Committee has reviewed the whole episode and decided to withdraw the said letter from and by the defunct National Working Committee”.

But in a statement signed by Hon. Bernard Mikko on behalf of Sheriff, the faction noted that the “National Working Committee (NWC) issued a query to Chief Tony Anenih in April 2015 as part of disciplinary procedures for his anti party activities in Imo state during the 2015 General elections in line with Article 57(4) of the PDP Constitution 2012 (as amended). Chief Anenih did not respond to the query but chose to tender a letter of resignation as BoT member. Up till date, the query remains unanswered and his resignation remains valid.

“Any effort to re-admit the chief will have to follow due process which is well known to all party members . If the chief is desirous of returning as member of the BoT, he should re-apply to the party, with his response to the pending query for consideration. Party members are hereby assured that no individual or group will be prejudiced in the enforcement of discipline and the application of the rule of law” he said

Rejoinder to Vanguard Report titled, "Any Govt. owing salaries shouldn't exist- Amosun
2:51:49 PMadekunle

Our attention has been drawn to a report titled, "Any Govt. owing salaries shouldn't exist- Amosun," published on page 10 of the Vanguard Newspaper on Friday, July 29, 2016.

The erroneous report, which was curiously repeated on Friday, July 29, was first published by the same newspaper on Thursday, July 28 with the title, "Any Govt. owing salaries not worth existing- Amosun."

While we are still at a loss as to why a reputable national daily would repeat the same report for two days consecutively, we are even more surprised considering the fact that the re-hashed report was not only false, but clearly a figment of the imagination of the writer.

For record purposes, we will like to state the true picture of what transpired as follows:

1. That on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, attended the opening session of the 3rd Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, which was held in Abeokuta, the state capital.

2. That the governor shortly before declaring the conference open took time to address some of the issues that the workers had slated for discussion in the course of the conference.

3. Expectedly, one of the main issues was the current financial challenges facing the nation and the inability of some states of the federation to pay salaries as and when due.

4. The Ogun State governor while addressing this issue, explained that whereas the Ogun State government was not owing salaries, in most states of the federation, governors (including himself) are having sleepless nights trying to ensure that workers are paid their wages as and when due

5. He used the situation in Ogun State as an example, stating that the revenue accruing to the state from the Federation Account in some months is not up to N1bn, whereas the state has a wage bill of over N9bn to pay on monthly basis.

6. The governor further stated that in the face of this reality, governors still have to ensure that social amenities like security, infrastructure and other social services are maintained.

7. Given this scenario, Governor Amosun explained that he and most of his brother governors are constantly under pressure to meet the needs of the workforce in their states knowing full well that "a labourer is worthy of his wages."

8. The Ogun State governor said, "I am not making a case for governors but we are Nigerians too." He added that governors are not happy when they are unable to pay salaries and they are all trying their best to ensure that workers are happy but "we are no magicians."

9. Governor Amosun said he and his colleagues are not oblivious of the need to meet the wage bills. He said, "Any business that cannot pay its workforce is not a business, including a state. A state that can't pay salaries, there is a problem. We know it, I know it and I know my colleagues know it too."

10. The governor further explained that the realization of this fact gives him and other governors sleepless nights as they work day and night to meet the needs of their people

11. The governor, therefore, solicited the support and understanding of workers at this critical time in the history of Nigeria saying that, "you are our landlords. If we are going to succeed, it is with your cooperation and support."

12. He appreciated the workforce in Ogun State for their cooperation and called for their continued support, which he said was responsible for the state's ability to pay salaries as and when due.

From the foregoing, it is clear that at no point did the governor say "states that are unable to pay salaries are not worth existing," as erroneously claimed by Daud Olatunji, the Vanguard Correspondent in Abeokuta who incidentally has been in the habit of twisting the governor's comments and reporting them out of context.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is not the first instance where the reporter in question would concoct reports totally at variance with the reality of what the governor might have said.

For instance, whereas on July 28, the Vanguard reporter falsely claimed that the governor said, "States that are unable to pay salaries are not worth existing," other newspapers that covered the same event did not have a similar report. The Sun Newspaper, for instance, correctly reported the governor as having said that "Governors Are not Magicians."

In another instance on July 20, 2016, the same Vanguard Reporter wrote a report with the headline "Salary Default: Govs Fail to Think outside the box- Amosun." Whereas there is no direct quote in the body of the report to support that misleading headline, the Guardian newspaper of the same day, correctly reported the governor with a report titled, "Govs have not been mismanaging funds, Amosun insists."

Similarly, on May 24, 2016, the Vanguard newspaper was once again the only newspaper that erroneously reported under the headline, "Poor Economy: Govs should think out of the box - Amosun." Reporting the same event, on the same day, the Nigerian Tribune's headline read, "Ogun Revenue rises by 98% – Amosun;" the Guardian reported, "Ogun Surpassed revenue target despite challenges, says Amosun;" while the Nation newspaper reported with the headline, "Amosun: diversification boosts Ogun IGR by 97 per cent."

This is a disturbing trend. We therefore hope that you would use your good offices to ensure that professional standards and integrity, for which the Vanguard newspapers, has come to be known over the years, are sustained.

Muslims pray with Catholics over priest's 'barbaric' murder
2:46:20 PMFemi Ajasa

Muslims attended Catholic mass in churches around France on Sunday in solidarity and sorrow following the brutal jihadist murder of a priest, the latest in a string of attacks.

More than 100 Muslims were among the 2,000 faithful who packed the 11th-century Gothic cathedral of Rouen, near the Normandy town where two jihadi teenagers slit the throat of 85-year-old Father Jacques Hamel.

“I thank you in the name of all Christians,” Rouen Archbishop Dominique Lebrun told them. “In this way you are affirming that you reject death and violence in the name of God.”

A few policemen and soldiers stood guard outside but did not conduct searches, seeking to reassure a jittery population after the second jihadist attack in less than a fortnight.

In the southern city of Nice, where a jihadist carried out a rampage in a truck on July 14, claiming 84 lives, local imam Otaman Aissaoui led a delegation of Muslims to a Catholic mass.

“Being united is a response to the act of horror and barbarism,” Aissaoui said.

Notre Dame church in southwestern Bordeaux also welcomed a Muslim delegation, led by the city’s top imam, Tareq Oubrou.

“It’s an occasion to show (Muslims) that we do not confuse Islam with Islamism, Muslim with jihadist,” said Reverend Jean Rouet.

Muslims were responding to a call by the French Muslim council CFCM to show “solidarity and compassion” over the priest’s murder on Tuesday.

Said a woman wearing a beige headscarf who sat in a back pew at a church in central Paris: “I’m a practising Muslim and I came to share my sorrow and tell you that we are brothers and sisters.”

Giving her name only as Sadia, she added softly: “What happened is beyond comprehension.”

At the Saint Leger church in the northern city of Lens, around 30 Muslims attended mass wearing T-shirts emblazoned with messages such as, “Terrorism has no religion or identity”.

Father Hubert Renard told the congregation: “We are not alone; our Muslim brothers are here too.”

Many were moved to tears during the sign of peace, a regular part of the liturgy when the faithful turn to greet each other in the pews, either shaking hands or kissing.

Muslims also attended Catholic masses in Italy, notably at Rome’s Santa Maria di Trastevere church, in response to a call by the Sant’Egidio community known for its international mediation efforts. Other joint services were held in Milan, Naples and Palermo, Sicily.

The killing of Father Hamel fanned fears of religious tensions in France and renewed recriminations over perceived security lapses.

Both of the 19-year-old attackers — Adel Kermiche and Abdel Malik Petitjean — had been on the intelligence services’ radar and had tried to go to Syria.

– Jihadist’s cousin charged –

Prime Minister Manuel Valls called Sunday for a new “pact” with the Muslim community in France, Europe’s largest with around five million members.

Also Sunday, dozens of prominent Muslims published a joint letter pledging: “We, French and Muslim, are ready to assume our responsibilities.”

Meanwhile a Syrian refugee who was taken in for questioning after a photocopy of his passport was found at Kermiche’s house has been released, a source close to the investigation said.

“Nothing suggests he had any involvement” in the attack, the source said.

However Petitjean’s 30-year-old cousin was charged on Sunday with “criminal association in connection with terrorism”, the Paris public prosecutor said.

The suspect, named as Farid K., “was fully aware of his cousin’s imminent violent action, even if he did not know the precise place or day,” the prosecutor said in an earlier statement.

Media reports say Petitjean and Kermiche met through the encrypted messaging app Telegram.

The graceful and stylish ping ponger who would be competing in her sixth Olympics is also the assistant Team captain to Mikel Obi who at the weekend was also named captain of the Football team, thereby making him a double captain to the Games.

Funke Oshonaike, no doubt, would treasure to be the flag bearer as marching with her fellow athletes in an opening ceremony is considered by many athletes as the pinnacle of their Olympic journey.

Table Tennis, is indeed, honoured with yet another player, Segun Toriola whose incredible willpower and perseverance sees him as the Nigerian with seven appearances at the Olympics.

The Opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics would also see an athlete take the Olympic Oath during the Opening Ceremony, ”In the name of all the competitors”.

Meanwhile, Seven wrestlers, five females and two males, who remain the hope of the nation in winning medals at the Summer Rio Olympics depart Nigeria today for the Games.

Expectations for medals from the wrestling team is buoyed by the fact that they are handled by one of
the very good experienced coaches and a gold medalist in the sport, Daniel Igali.

The wrestlers are(females), Mercy Genesis, Odunayo Adekuruoye, Aminat Adeniyi, Blessing Oborududu and Hannah Reuben as well as two males; Amas Daniel and Soso Tamara.

”If you talk about efforts, we have done well and put in over 100% for this Games. All we need is prayers from our people and luck on the wrestlers”, Igali who won Gold medal for Canada in the Olympic said.

As many sports are complaining of inadequate preparation, Igali said that his wrestlers have been preparing for the Rio Olympics since 2013. ”We’re ready but I’m not making promises”, he modestly said. ”I’ll be happy if they will approve our sparring partners to travel. They’re the ones who keep these wrestlers in tip-top shape”.

Aside the fact that he is the captain of the Super Eagles, he is also Team Nigeria captain, so after meeting with both of them and explaining my position, I am pleased to say Azubuike who has been our captain understood and was happy to hand over the captain's band to Mikel.

“It is a thing of joy for my team to produce the first footballer to captain Team Nigeria to the Olympics. This, to me, is more than gratifying.”

The players unanimously accepted Mikel Obi as their captain and expressed delight at the role he has been playing since he joined the team. On his part, Mikel expressed joy at being made the captain of the Dream Team and said he sees it as an honor that must yield result in Brazil.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria U23 will now depart Atlanta, United States of America for Brazil on Monday, 1st August. The earlier arrangement was for the team to depart for Brazil in batches due to difficulties in securing seats for team, but the Nigeria Football Federation decided against that movement and is now thinking of either getting them to Brazil as a team or chartering a private plane to take the team directly to Manaus, venue of the first team's first match.

Disarm Fulani herdsmen, Anglican church tells FG
2:05:57 PMFemi Ajasa

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), yesterday, lamented the rising spate of attack by herdsme?n on farming communities across the country, while it called on the Federal Government to take decisive actions to disarm Fulani herdsmen, so as to stem the growing wave of attack and killings of harmless farmers.

In a communiqué issued by the Diocese of Kubwa, on the second session of the third synod in St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral , Kubwa , Abuja, said the attacks on farming communities is inimical to Nigeria’s desire to diversify its economy through agriculture.

In the communiqué signed by the Bishop, Rt. Rev. Duke Akamisoko, the church noted that it was trying to recover from the effect of the massive destruction of lives and property in the North Eastern states of Nigeria by Boko Haram insurgents, the incessant killings of Christians like the women killed at Kano and Kubwa which were worrisome.

He said “The Synod notes with dismay the prevalent attack on farming communities by Fulani herdsmen in different parts of the country and demand that more decisive actions should be taken by the government to disarm the herdsmen to stem the rising wave of attack and killing of harmless farmers as this is inimical to its desire to diversify our economy through agriculture.”
He also called on Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to take a defensive stand against the slaughtering of Christians in the name of protecting their religion, while he urged the three arms of government to guard the constitutional provision of freedom of worship and association enshrined in the Constitution of Nigeria and spare the church.

On corruption battle, the church appreciated the efforts of the government, urging the anti-corruption agencies to adopt a strategy that will cut across all arms and tiers of government, agencies and departments with carefully thought out long term institutionalize framework.

The church enjoined well-meaning Nigerians to partner the government for effective result.

Slavery: Africa not free as long as it remains world's biggest beggar continent
1:48:35 PMFemi Ajasa

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the state of Osun has stated that according to a report by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Africa led the global begging troupe with a total aid outflow to Africa in 2013 at $46 billion, only followed by Asia in a distant second with $25 billion.

DSC_0250

The governor stated while delivering keynote at the 2016 emancipation celebration of the pan African historical, arts and culture festival (PANAFEST), which held at Cape Coast, Ghana, on Friday July 29, 2016.

The governor who took participants at the event on the historical role the west played in under-developing and subjugating Africa said Africans are not yet totally free as long as she remains the poorest and the biggest beggar region of the world.

On aide being delivered to the continent, Aregbesola stated that ehe figure for Asia topped $25 billon only because Afghanistan alone got a disproportionate amount of $11 billion that year. In Africa, one out of every two persons is poor.

"In a 2015 World Bank estimate of GDP per capita, the average for sub-Saharan Africa is $1,571.3 compared to Middle East and North Africa's $7,342.3, or EU's $31,843.2, North America's monstrous $54,580 and even the world's average of $9995.6. Even then, this average is this high because a few rich countries like Seychelles has per capita income in excess of $25,000 whereas there are poorer countries whose income is less than $400."

The Ogbeni further stated that. "We are not free as long as the continent remains the hotbed of proxy wars between superpowers and now the theatre of religious and ethnic conflicts instigated by the elites and their foreign allies. Freedom and true emancipation must consist in the development of the continent's human and material resources for the benefit of its 1.2 billion people."

Many escape as inmates bring down prison wall in Kogi
4:02:17 PMadekunle

Thirteen inmates escaped in fresh jailbreak recorded at Koton Karfe prison in Kogi in the early hours of Saturday.

It was gathered from a reliable source that the incident happened at about 7a.m. when the inmates forcefully brought down the wall of the prison.

The all male prison facility which was inaugurated in 2014 has the capacity to accommodate 180 inmates.

However, it was also gathered that it was accommodating 263 inmates as at the time of the jailbreak, Saturday and one of the escaped inmates was re-arrested almost immediately by security agents.

Recalled that this was the third jailbreak recorded in Koton Karfe as the old prison facility witnessed similar jailbreaks in 2010 and 2013.

In previous jailbreaks 132 inmates escaped from the prison and majority were awaiting trials.

It was gathered that Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Prison Service immediately sent a representative to Koton Karfe to assess the situation.

The State's Controller of Prison, Mr Musa Maza, who would have shed more light on the incident, did not pick several calls made to his mobile telephone line.

3 suspects arrested over N256.2million trucks load of poultry items
3:30:44 PMTony Chinonso

By Udeme Clement

In line with the policy of the Federal Government to grow agricultural sector for industrial activities to thrive, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone 'C', Owerri has intercepted long trucks fully loaded with foreign imported poultry products estimated at the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N256.2million brought into the country illegally by smugglers. The Command also arrested three suspects in connection with the contraband items.

*The seized items
*The seized items

The Public Relations Officer of the Unit, Onuigbo Ifeoma, made this known to Sunday Vanguard in a statement signed by the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Unit, Comptroller Haruna Mamudu, revealed that the frozen products, which were cleverly and deceitfully concealed in a Scania truck with an inscription of 'DHL' were seized along the Benin axis in Edo State.

He said, "The culprits concealed all the prohibited goods in long trucks, in a bid to escape security checks, but the eagle-eyed officers on duty uncovered them.  Aside from the negative impact on local poultry industries in the country, there are serious health hazards associated with the consumption of foreign poultry products preserved with chemicals meant for the preservation of dead bodies.

Nigerians should stop consuming these products because a number of untimely deaths had occurred as a result of this. The NCS had continued to ensure maximum media publicity in respect of the dangers posed to human health by imported frozen poultry products and warned those still engrossed in the illicit business to desist in their own interest or face the full weight of the law".

The CAC regretted that while NCS had remained resolute and consistent in the war against smuggling, those involved in this unpatriotic act had continued to devise and perfect many plans to achieve their illegal ambitions to the detriment of the nation's economy.  "We are battle-ready for smugglers  as NCS is now well fortified and better equipped to deal decisively with smugglers wherever they operate with a superlative intelligence gathering system. The suspects already in Customs' net would be thoroughly investigated and if found culpable, must be made to face the law accordingly.

We are talking of change but regrettably these smugglers are not ready to embrace the change meant for the betterment of our country. We have no other country called ours, therefore everybody must come together to salvage it," he stressed.

Okowa's solution will end N-Delta crisis- Onuesoke
2:42:47 PMTony Chinonso

By Ephraim Oseji

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Sunny Onuesoke, has thrown his weight behind the solution proffered by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to the Niger Delta crisis.

Okowa, while receiving the Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, who paid him a visit  in his office in  Asaba, Delta State, had suggested that the best way to tackle security in the Niger Delta is through the sharing of intelligence and combination of personnel.

Speaking in Asaba, Onuesoke, who said he supported the governor's advice, argued that if the government approached the Niger Delta crisis through intelligence and combination of personnel as suggested by Okowa, the crisis in the region would be resolved.

The PDP chieftain, who advised the Federal Government to focus on how the country could be restructured without resorting to war so that every body will have sense of belonging, described Okowa as a peace-loving governor who will not want his state to be turned into a  war zone, adding that, that is why he is coming up with such a beautiful idea.

Oritsejafor gave Nigerian Christians hope- Edijala
2:41:46 PMTony Chinonso

By Ephraim Oseji

Immediate past Chairman of Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, Hon.  Raymond Edijala has commended the leadership qualities of the former President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, PastorAyo Oritsejafor.

Speaking in Warri,   after the swearing-in   of Dr. Supo Ayokunle as new CAN President, Edijala stressed that Oritsejafor has given the body of Christ in Nigeria a selfless, word based leadership, high moral value, integrity, wisdom from above, vigor and an inherent drive for unity.

According to him, Oritsejafor's achievement as the first Pentecostal CAN President in a very vicious political, social and economical disposition of Nigeria is worthy of commendation, maintained that   the former CAN   President's courage, charisma and divine boldness has given   Christians   like him hope, adding that his activities had indeed shown him as a father and leader of Christians.

"As a human, you were not above mistakes, but the grace was more than sufficient in the face of unfounded and lucifer induced criticisms.  I love you Papa.  Keep the good work of faith burning," Edijala advised him, just as he pointed out that Oritsejafor fought a good fight within the laws of God and of the land to reposition Christianity in Nigeria.

He noted that as a good Christian leader, despite being antagonized by his foes who equally used some senseless Christians to attack him, Oritsejafor stood his ground and ensured that all in all, his tenure was a success.

He prayed for God to bless Oritsejafor, adding that   God   should open   the eyes of those Christians to see the reality of his leadership qualities.

That Ofoje's soccer camp in usa!
2:05:34 PMTony Chinonso

By Onochie Anibeze

IT was a good feeling when Ikechukwu Ofoje introduced me as a guy he played with in Nigeria and ovation followed. But it felt better to see for myself the progress this wonderful Nigerian is making in the United States of America. Ofoje made name as the youngest captain of Enugu Rangers when the Nigerian league could compare with what we have in Europe now in terms of followership and glamour at least among Nigerians. He was a strong defender, who sometimes was thrown into the attack. He never disappointed on those occasions. He packed bullets on both legs but his right was deadlier.

Kids that attended the summer soccer camp at USC with the coaches. Standing right is Ofoje.
Kids that attended the summer soccer camp at USC with the coaches. Standing right is Ofoje.

Don't forget that Brazilians once played in our league. Rangers had two and a Brazilian coach in Roberto Diaz. Our economy was good to attract foreign players. I'm not talking about the generation of our grand fathers but our generation. How things have degenerated. SHAME. Permit the digression. Now, Ofoje is the head coach of University of South Carolina, Aiken. He has been coaching in the USA for more than 15 years, and in Aiken, he is almost an institution. He is very popular and simply called ‘Coach Aik.’

As guest of Ofoje, I enjoyed a 20 per cent discount in the hotel that I stayed. I visited my long time friend while on vacation, last June. It was a pleasant experience watching the summer soccer camp the University organised for kids. Soccer is growing in America, thanks to the likes of Ofoje and Totty O. Totty who also made name playing for Sharks and Rangers.

Totty coaches at Grambling State University and he is one of the respected coaches in female football in America, the home of female football. He was one of those who trained potentials at the soccer camp. Totty was pleasant to be with just as he was exciting as a full back in those great days of Nigerian football. I met many interesting guys. Dan Ikpechukwu was unbelievable, a true brother. Ify Okafor and her daughter; Ekene Nworji and her lovely wife; Ifeoma and their children. I met an Enugu man who claimed he played football when there were no rules and breaking opponents’  legs excited. He said he played for Robinson United.

Ofoje directing affairs
Ofoje directing affairs

I met a man who appreciates President Muhammadu Buhari's fight against corrupt politicians but insists that indiscipline and corruption have so permeated our culture that the only way Nigeria can return to the era of WAR AGAINST INDISCIPLINE in Buhari's first coming as a military Head of State is for Buhari to "emerge from the Presidential Villa in a military uniform, announce that he has overthrown himself and that Buhari the soldier is the new President who will then begin to deal with indiscipline the way democratic norms can not derail."

Laughter followed but the man said that his joke should be taken seriously "because Nigerians only understand the language of force to desist from corruption and indiscipline on our streets, homes and offices”.

Another interesting guy I met was Philmon, a British coach who was among the 10 coaches who worked with Ofoje at the summer camp. There was also Eugene, the Ghanaian-born Canadian, who is Ofoje's assistant but plays the game better than many of his players. And then Kimberly, the woman who told me an interesting story about "the Governor of Igbo nation" whom she described as a king. Kimberly brought her son, Keaston to the soccer camp and stayed back to watch the drills and games throughout the sessions. Many parents left after dropping off their children and only returned later in the evenings for them. Kimberly stayed to watch the sessions.

The indoor sessions were as interesting as the outdoor soccer clinics. It was while on the outdoor session that I started discussing with Kimberly. We exchanged greetings and she appeared excited meeting a Nigerian and asked if I were Igbo or Yoruba. It was clear she had Nigerian friends. She pleasantly told me about the Igbo convention she attended in Dallas in 2015, adding,

"I have never seen a thing like that." She had her reasons for saying this. " I saw the Governor of Igbo nation," she says. " He had bodyguards.  The people adored him for he was like a king, gorgeously dressed with a retinue of aides and followers. He commanded great respect and people were around him. Yes, I met the governor of Igbo nation in Nigeria. My Nigerian friends took me to the convention and I enjoyed it. There were music and a lot to drink and eat. It was a wonderful night in Dallas." She painted a picture of the said governor of Igbo nation displaying stupendous affluence and attracting attention in America.

.Totty O. Totty with Eugeue
.Totty O. Totty with Eugeue

I explained to Kimberly that about five states make up the Igbo nation and that what she saw was governor of one of the states. After phone calls to her Nigerian friends she confirmed to me the next day that the governor was Rochas Okorocha and I told her she met the governor of Imo State and that she must have attended the Imo State convention in Dallas. People are looking forward to another Rochas Okorocha show in US this year but with reduced allocations to the states and biting economy I doubt if Okorocha can stage a similar show again this year. He caught the fancy of the likes of Kimberly but the reality in Nigeria now cannot accommodate such unnecessary display of affluence.

It was pleasant reuniting with Ikechukwu Ofoje and Totty O. Totty again. I enjoyed some discount in the hotel I stayed in because I was guest of Ofoje, the head coach and director of soccer of University of South Carolina. That, in a way, underscores the importance of the office this Nigerian holds in the United States of America where he immensely contributes to the growth of soccer.

He is highly respected and he enjoys the job. Why not? Ofoje's family is his pillar. His wife has been a pillar from his university days at New Hampshire where he played in the same team with Totty. She is American with African hospitality.  I cannot forget in a hurry her goat meat pepper soup. Ofoje strives to develop potentials in USA. He also strives to give back to the game both in USA and in Nigeria where he played great football. But while they appreciate him in the USA and render all the support he needs to succeed, his story from Nigeria has not been pleasant.

He is outraged at how values have fallen in Nigeria. Ofoje studied in the University on soccer scholarship and he is today in a position to award scholarships to deserving students. While admonishing attendees of the soccer camp on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of them, he told them the story of his last scouting mission in Nigeria. He had met some young players he thought would grab the chance of soccer scholarship to study in US and play for the University of South Carolina, USC, Aiken.

But after interactions with the young school boys they were asking "how much will the university pay us for playing for them?" He left and returned to US wondering what had happened to the values and mentality of the people. It was a chance many would have grabbed with both hands in his time as a player in Nigeria. Ofoje harped on the importance of sports with education.

He is always proud to tell his players and holiday soccer camp attendees about Africa and on the last day of the soccer camp he told them that they had a chance to appear in Vanguard, Nigeria's top newspaper. He introduced me as "one of the best sports journalists from Africa who was a fine player and whom I played with when we were growing up in Nigeria." Applause followed from all.

PDP broke into the treasury, emptied it - Oshiomhole
12:59:08 PMadekunle

Says Buhari is blocking all the leakages in our economy

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says people of the state will not allow the PDP loot and deplete the state's treasury the way they depleted the nation's treasury, calling on people of the state to reject the PDP and its candidate in the governorship election holding on September 10.

Speaking at a rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) holding at Afuze, Owan East Local Government Area, on Saturday, Oshiomhole said the nation is presently in an economic recession because the past PDP government looted the treasury dry.

He said: "The people who bled the treasury are now coming to tell you, the victims, that rice is now expensive, naira has suffered devaluation. If one man took over N2 billion, in Edo alone, what they have confessed to EFCC to have taken is over N5 billion.

“If they took so much dollars meant for defense to protect Christians against attacks from Boko Haram, to protect mosques from Boko Haram attack, these people took the money in dollars, converted it to naira, depleted our dollar reserves, shared it into their pockets, their generals dug soak-away pits and put dollars inside. The whole dollars from the Central Bank was taken and from a reserve of over $50 billion, PDP bled the reserves and today it is down to about $20 billion.

“When a man comes to your house, burgled your store where you kept your food and in the morning you find the store burgled, can you immediately feed your children? What President Buhari is doing now, when he found that PDP broke into the treasury and emptied it, he has started rebuilding of the door of the treasury to resecure it, and the ones they have taken he is recovering them one after the other.

“The way PDP put fire on our economy, to rebuild it cannot be overnight. Today, my confidence about the future of our country is that Buhari is blocking all the leakages in our economy.”

On the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr Godwin Obaseki, Oshiomhole said: "we have shown that Edo is viable, Godwin's task is to focus on how to get jobs for the youths, because when we built roads we wanted to attract investors, when we built schools, we wanted to develop the human capital and when you develop the human capital the next task is for him to create the environment for those who have gone to schools to be qualified for work. You can see that this is not something that came out of the blues.

“It is the product of the 20-year development plan for the state which he chaired as Chairman up to the year 2020. nation's don't grow on the basis of the rule of the thumb, everything in the life of a nation is the vision, the clarity of purpose of the leadership.

“When the leadership cannot see beyond the nose, he cannot do what he cannot imagine. We are clear of the past, we are clear of our destination, we have identified the route, Godwin will take us to the next level.”

On his part, Mr Godwin Obaseki, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress said the Comrade has done well in the past seven and half years but that more needs to be done.
He said: "we have focussed on education, focussed on infrastructure, focussed on health and water, yes, we will continue to do so. But will now make sure that we focus on human development. We want to focus on job creation, and we will create 200,000 jobs for our people.

"We will not only create jobs from agriculture, we will also from mining, We are attracting a lot of mining companies into Owan East. They are over 25 mining licenses in Owan East, we are talking with the Minister for Solid Minerals to ensure we get investors to this place. So by the grace of God, in another one year, you will see a lot of investors coming to Owan East and this way, they will bring employment and prosperity to Owan East."

A PDP Woman Leader in Owan East, Mrs Arukhe led over 90 members of themPDP to defect to the APC at the rally.

Following reports by the children’s agency of the United Nations, UNICEF, that it is pulling out its aid workers from the north east region after Boko Haram reportedly ambushed their convoy, the Northern Inter-Faith and Religious Organizations for Peace (NIFROM) has said the world humanitarian body was never ready to provide relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the north east.

The group which condemned the attack in its strongest term, however said the attack was just a deliberate excuse for the U.N. to suspend its relief operations and pull out its workers.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, National Cordinator of NIFROM, Bishop Musa Fomson commended the military for repelling the attack and thanked the officers of the army for their sacrifice in maintaining security of lives in the north east.

He said, “It is hypocritical that the same world body that that did not do the needful to halt Boko Haram's rise are the same agencies that are today making a show of providing relief to affected persons. Had there been a prompt international response to the threat of Boko Haram in the initial stage we would not be at this point now.

“It took the horror pictures that emerged from the Internally Displaced Person's (IDPs) camps in North Eastern Nigeria to provoke the intervention for which the convoy came under attack. Interestingly, it took just that one attack for the UN to announce a suspension of the humanitarian efforts.

“The feeling we have is that the attack provided a much needed excuse for these agencies that have no interest in doing anything for the tens of thousands of people dislocated by Boko Haram. Had there been no attack it would have been a question of time before they cook up another excuse that would have still been used to suspend the so-called humanitarian efforts.”

The clerics also slammed the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki for not carrying out a proper assessment of the situation before reacting to it.

It said had Dr Saraki and his likes done right by the country as expected of their positions we would not be here having nationals of other countries give handouts to our distressed brothers and sisters.

“The amounts allocated for the North East would have done something meaningful towards rehabilitating the population had the institution, the National Assembly, that Dr Saraki presides over as chairman performed its oversight functions diligently and curb the corruption associated with local relief efforts.

“For those who do not understand our grouse, the Senate President and the UN have been insensitive to what happens in the North East over the years. Many Nigerians have been killed and or maimed on the same road by terrorists in the past without them taking any notice neither did they show the sympathy now being shown to the aid workers. For us this is hypocrisy at work.

“We therefore urge Nigerians to accept that it is their responsibility to rise up to the challenge and support their brethren. It is now glaring that we must forget about the inadequate and often strung out humanitarian assistance that serves no purpose other than providing photo ops for those behind them,” he said.

Brother kills sisters on their wedding eve
11:04:17 AMadekunle

A man killed his two sisters on the eve of their weddings in Pakistan’s central Punjab province, police said Saturday, in the latest case of so-called “honour” killings in the country.

Kosar and Gulzar Bibi, aged 22 and 28, were shot dead by 35-year-old brother Nasir Hussain on Friday as they prepared to marry men they had chosen themselves, senior police officer Mehar Riaz told AFP.

Hussain objected to the love matches and had wanted the women to marry someone within the extended family, he added.

“The brother shot dead both the sisters yesterday and fled the site,” the officer said, adding that a search was underway.

“It is a simple case of killing for honour,” he said.

Father of the family Atta Mohammad told reporters that Hussain had “destroyed everything”.

“He ruined my family, he destroyed us, he destroyed everything” Mohammad said.

The murders came days after social media starlet Qandeel Baloch was strangled to death by her brother who said he was “not embarrassed” to have killed her, reigniting calls for action against the crime.

Hundreds of women are murdered by relatives in the conservative Muslim nation each year on the pretext of defending what is seen as family honour.

Pakistan’s law minister this month announced that bills aimed at tackling “honour killings” and boosting rape convictions would soon be voted on by parliament, after mounting pressure to tackle a pattern of crime that claims around 1,000 lives a year.

The perpetrators of so-called honour killings — in which the victim, normally a woman, is killed by a relative — often walk free because they can seek forgiveness for the crime from another family member.

Allegri says absence of star names 'positive'
11:00:37 AMadekunle

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri believes the absence of the club’s marquee names from their pre-season tour of Asia might prove a blessing in disguise as he prepares the Turin giants for a tilt at an unprecedented sixth straight Serie A title.

“It has given young players their chance,” Allegri said Saturday as the Juventus tour came to a close.

“From what we have learned we will go back to Italy now and some will stay and some will move on to get experience from other teams. So it has been very positive.”

This summer’s European Championship, coming on the back of a hectic domestic season, meant the Italian had to leave as many as 15 first-team regulars out of Juve’s tour through Australia and then to Hong Kong.

But Allegri says their absence gave him more time to focus his attention on the likes of new signing Miralem Pjanic, lured over for 32 million euros ($35.6 million) from Roma, as well as the Brazilian duo of Alex Sandro and Hernanes, who both joined Juve last year and will be hoping for more game time in 2016.

Defender Medhi Benatia, recruited on a season-loan from Bayern Munich, was also put through his paces -- and impressed — as did rising star Paulo Dybala, the 22-year-old Argentinian coming fresh from a breakout first season for Juventus that saw him score 19 goals from 34 appearances after crossing from Palermo.

Both Dybala and Benatia scored in Juve’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Melbourne on Tuesday, while 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Blanco lit up their 1-1 draw with Melbourne Victory last Saturday with a 50-yard screamer.

Benatia looks ready to add some bite to the Juve defence with his forward runs and was again on the scoresheet as the team wrapped up the tour with a 2-1 win over Hong Kong outfit South China.

“I'm very satisfied,” smiled Allegri. “He's been a very positive addition to the squad.”

The second goal came from 21-year-old Lorenzo Rosseti, another of Juve's young guns to impress their manager while their more seasoned teammates were back home.

– Merging the squads –

Allegri flew out of Hong Kong on Saturday night -- no doubt hoping he would arrive to hear the 100 million euro saga of midfielder Paul Pogba’s “will he or won’t he” transfer to Manchester United had been put to bed. The 48-year-old had throughout the tour pretty much avoided all mention of whatever business might be going on.

“I don't like to talk about the market,” was his offering on the matter in Hong Kong. “On Tuesday I will be back at the club and talk about it then. What I can say is I am happy with what we have done on the market so far.”

Allegri will hook up with the rest of his squad on his return to Juventus Turin base, among them club-record signing Gonzalo Higuain, the Argentine striker captured for a reported 90 million euros from rivals Napoli.

It’s hoped Serie A’s top-scorer last season with 36 goals from all competitions will add the firepower needed to helped Juventus break a European Champions League drought that dates way back to 1996. Juve were finalists two seasons ago and last year fell in the round of 16 to eventual champions Bayern.

Allegri said Higuain would formally meet his new teammates as the two squads -- those on tour and those left behind -- get together on Tuesday.

“The plan is well defined,” said Allegri. “We will merge the two parts of the team. Those who have toured will be more advanced in their condition and we have three pre-season matches left now before the season starts to get everyone to the same level.”

Flood water kills 26 wedding guests
10:56:36 AMadekunle

At least 26 people, mostly children, were killed Saturday when a vehicle carrying wedding guests was washed off a mountainous road by floods and flung into a gorge, officials said.

The dead included 18 children and six women.

“Rescue operation has been completed, dead bodies of 26 people had been retrieved,” Rahimullah Mehsud, a local government official of Khyber tribal district, where the incident took place, told AFP.

Mehsud earlier said rescue workers and residents were facing difficulties as the “area is remote and mountainous”.

The accident happened when a pick-up truck carrying the groom’s party of 29 was hit by floods in a remote village in Khyber, one of Pakistan’s seven tribal districts bordering Afghanistan.

Three people who survived were taken to hospital.

Hekmat Khan, another government official, confirmed the new death toll and told AFP that the child victims were aged up to nine years.

The heavy monsoon rains began earlier this month, drenching the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and central Punjab provinces, which have been badly affected by flooding in recent years that some scientists have linked to climate change.

Henry, Charles Okah, Nnamdi Kanu may be freed as MEND, FG strike deal to end N-Delta crisis
9:42:32 AMadekunle

By Emma Amaize, Regional Editor, South-South
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) and the Federal Government currently engaged in a dialogue through the oil companies and security agencies have reached far-reaching compromises, including the release of former militant leader, Henry Okah, in prison in South Africa and Charles Okah, incarcerated in Nigeria.

They also agreed that ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo , alias Tompolo, would not be harassed by government if he makes himself available as a delegate on MEND Aaron Team 2, while the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, would be released on condition that he renounces the agitation for "Biafra Republic."

MEND in a statement by spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, today (Saturday) announced other breakthroughs in the discussions that will end the revolt in the South-South and South East regions in a jiffy.

However, it said the recalcitrant Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, still has opportunity to embrace peace failing which a combination of military forces and volunteers in the region, would smoke them out.

The statement read: "The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) is the only militant group from the Niger Delta region who are presently engaged in a dialogue with the Federal Government of Nigeria – through oil companies and security agencies -with a view to resolving the current Niger Delta crisis."

"Thus far, the deliberations have been fruitful, various concessions and guarantees have already been secured. Some of which include, but are not limited to: Release of Henry Okah, Charles Okah and Obi Nwabueze; Review of the life sentence handed to Mr. Edmund Ebiware based on a proposal put forward by the Aaron Team representative for Abia and Imo states, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

"Also, conditional release of IPOB leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu and others if they renounce their agitation for a "Biafra Republic," the group said.

Furthermore, MEND said they agreed: "That Mr. Government Ekpemupolo shall not be arrested, harassed and/or intimidated whenever he makes himself available as a delegate of the MEND Aaron Team."

It added: "That international arbitrator and conflict negotiator, American Dr. Judith Asuni shall be accepted as the representative of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) on the MEND Aaron Team; that the criminal charges against Urhobo freedom fighter, Mr. Kelvin Prosper Oniarah shall be reviewed.

"That the life sentence which was handed to seven soldiers in 2008, who actively supported the Niger Delta struggle be reviewed under the Presidential Amnesty Programme. The affected persons are: Suleiman Alabi Akubo, Major. Mathias Peter, SGT, Alexander Davou, L.Cpl., Moses Nwaigwe, L.Cpl., Nnandi Anene, L.Cpl. Taatihi Emmanuel, L.Cpl and Caleb Bawa, PTE," it said. .

"However, one of the most immediate and urgent fallout of the ongoing dialogue is the imperative for the Federal Government and MEND to jointly and separately take proactive steps to rescue and secure the region. This is in the event that the recalcitrant Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) continuing on its senseless and politically-motivated path of attacks on the country’s oil assets," it noted.

MEND asserted: "To this end, both parties agreed that the Special Forces of the Nigerian Army should commence the purely routine but strategic military exercise code-named “Operation Crocodile Tears”; while MEND would commence a meet-the Government-Actors-and-People tour of the Niger Delta region code-named “Operation Moses”.

NUC approves new varsity for Bayelsa
9:16:38 AMadekunle

Yenagoa – The National Universities Commission (NUC), has approved the establishment of the University of Africa for Bayelsa, the 43rd state university in the country.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Daniel Iworiso-Markson, Chief Press Secretary to the Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson in Yenagoa on Saturday.

According to the statement, NUC handed over the letter of approval to Gov. Dickson when he visited the commission in Abuja.

It quoted Dickson as expressing gratitude to the NUC's Executive Secretary for the warm reception accorded him and his team.

“The approval of the university followed the formal presentation of relevant gazette law, academic brief, physical master-plan as well as the satisfactory report of the advisory resource assessment visit by the commission.

Dickson explained that the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, was conceived as a public private partnership venture and designed as a first rate institution of learning to attract some of the best teachers from Africa and the world.

He said the university would be funded by private partners while the government would only provide the enabling environment for its establishment.

“I am here leading this small delegation to present to you these laws passed by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, establishing a new university working with the private sector.

“It will be run on a public private partnership (PPP), basis. Unlike the existing one, it will not be directly funded by the state.

“Our belief is that for a university to be sustainable, we must create room for private sector participation and involvement.

“The University of Africa, Toru-Orua, is the first of its kind in this country to be established by government with private sector involvement.

“It will be strictly a fee paying tertiary institution that will attract students from across the continent and the globe.

“It will be the model as we encourage more private universities in this country'', Dickson said.

The statement quoted Prof Julius Okojie, NUC's Executive Secretary, as congratulating the state.

Okojie said the establishment of the university took effect from July 28, having complied with the basic requirements.
According to Okojie, the University of Africa is 143rd in the Nigerian university system.

Also UNICEF said on Saturday that it will continue providing aid in the northeast despite attack on humanitarian convoy last Thursday which left aid workers injured.

A statement signed by Col Sani Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations said “Toops on blocking position in Pulka yesterday Friday 29th July 2016, ambushed and killed 2 fleeing Boko Haram terrorists.

“It is equally believed one of the terrorists escaped with gun shot wounds.

“The troops also recovered 1 AK-47 rifle with registration number S 77411, a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with registration number FN 131908, one Motorcycle, 1 Bicycle and 5 Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle magazines.

” Other items recovered from the terrorists include 1 AK-47 rifle magazine loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, 67 rounds of 7.62mm linked (NATO) ammunition and Tecno brand of mobile telephone handset with NEXTTEL SIM card, as well as sacks of foodstuffs.

“The troops have continued their routine operations maintaining vigilance to prevent escaping Boko Haram terrorists out of Sambisa forest through that axis.

In another development, UNICEF said on Saturday that it will continue providing aid in the northeast despite attack on humanitarian convoy last Thursday which left aid workers injured.

A statement made available to Vanguard said “UNICEF continues to provide assistance to millions of conflict-affected children in northeast Nigeria, despite yesterday's attack on a humanitarian convoy.

“As a result of the attack, in which one UNICEF staff member was injured, travel by UN staff to high risk areas has been temporarily suspended.

"We are working at full strength in the Borno state capital Maiduguri," stressed UNICEF Nigeria Representative Jean Gough.

"We continue to call for increased efforts to reach people in desperate need across the state.

“We cannot let this heartless attack divert any of us from reaching the more than two million people who are in dire need of immediate humanitarian assistance."

“UNICEF has called on donors and humanitarian organizations to scale-up the response to the emerging disaster in Borno state, which is the most affected by the conflict with Boko Haram.

“Before the attack, security conditions had been improving in several areas.

"Our teams were finding people living on the brink of disaster," said Jean Gough, "The violence has disrupted farming and markets, destroyed food stocks, and damaged or destroyed health and water facilities. We absolutely have to reach more of these communities."

“UNICEF estimates that 244,000 children will suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year in Borno state alone and if they are not reached with treatment, one in five of them will die.

“UNICEF has provided two million people with health services and treated 56,000 children for malnutrition in the three conflict-affected states of northeast Nigeria.

“A quarter of a million people have improved access to clean water, and over 200,000 children have been able to go back to school.

“Despite the temporary suspension of travel to high risk areas, UNICEF plans to scale-up its response in Borno state substantially.

“At the beginning of the year, UNICEF appealed for US$55 million for its emergency work, of which US$23 million has so far been received.”
