3:58:38 PMOkogba

Manchester United-bound striker Romelu Lukaku is likely to have to spend a fraction of his extravagant salary on settling a fine in Beverly Hills after being arrested during a noisy party at his rented mansion.

Lukaku

A Beverly Hills Police Department statement on Saturday said Lukaku was arrested at his temporary residence in Beverly Hills on July 2 following a series of complaints over noise at the home.

Five Nigerians jailed over £2,500,000 scam in UK
3:36:02 PMadekunle

An illegal immigrant who headed a gang which used the identities of MPs, judges and police officers to con the taxpayer out of millions of pounds was jailed for more than five years.

Kayode Sanni, 38, received a jail term of five years and three months for his part in the elaborate scam.

According to thr mailonlie the fraudsters stole personal details from the Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC), which provides sport and fitness facilities to more than 120,000 public sector employees and pensioners.

Member lists were ‘stolen to order’ from CSSC and used to place orders for tax credit starter packs used in fraudulent claims over a four year period.

CSSC events manager Adedamola Oyebode, 30, stole membership lists and passed them on to her brothers-in-law Oluwatobe Emmanuel Odeyemi, 34, and Oluwagbenga Stephen Odeyemi, 39, who ran the fraud with Kayode Sanni, 38.

The gang managed to get away with £2,500,000 before staff at Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs spotted the ‘extraordinarily high rate’ of claims being made by civil servants.

If the scam had not been stopped it could have reaped more than £10,260,525, the Old Bailey heard.
Illegal immigrant Sanni ‘lied through his teeth’ and told jurors ‘my conscience is clear’ after denying involvement in the scam.

He was convicted after standing trial for one count of conspiracy to become knowingly concerned in a fraudulent act between 10 March 2009 and 11 June 2013.

Sanni was jailed for five years and three months.

Emmanuel Odeyemi, Chantelle Gumbs and Adedamole Oyebode had already pleaded guilty to fraud charges.
Odeyemi was jailed for three and a half years, Gumbs was handed a 15-month sentence suspended for two years, and Oyebode received a two-year sentence suspended for two years.

Sentencing, Judge Paul Dodgson said: ‘This is a serious fraud you all involved yourself in.

‘There is no doubt that much of the money has been sent to Nigeria.’
He told an earlier hearing: ‘This was a list of members of the Civil Service Sports Council and their personal details.

‘Having obtained those personal details, they were then dressed up, as it were, with addresses that were controlled by one or more of the defendants.

‘Having done that, a claim was then made, and that was by telephone calls being made for a pack to be sent that would enable claims to be made.

‘Claims were then made in those genuine names with false details.
‘When the monies were eventually released, they went into bank accounts that had been created specifically to receive these fraudulent proceeds.’

Sanni had expressed his remorse for the scam in a letter following his conviction.
Judge Dodgson rejected the conman’s expressions of remorse, noting: ‘He lied through his teeth.

‘I think he is remorseful that he got caught.
‘I’m sorry, I just can’t regard that as sincere.
‘I can’t see how someone who contested the matter, who in the jury’s judgement, and in mine as well, just blatantly lied throughout and then claimed to be remorseful.’

Opening the case, prosecutor Allison Hunter QC said: ‘These defendants went to exceptionally complex and sophisticated lengths in their orchestration of this fraud.

‘They themselves operate under a number of fluid pseudonyms and false identities, operate a multiplicity of email address, have access to a number of mobile phone numbers and have spread the conduct of this fraud over computers and electronic storage devices sufficient to stock a small warehouse.’

Ms Hunter said the investigators began by identifying one of the multiple false tax credit claimants as Chantelle Gumbs, who has admitted her part in the scam.

The source of the stolen identity was traced to the CSSC in Chadwick Street, Westminster, where six staff had password protected access to members’ details.

Adedamole Oyebode, who worked for the CSSC between August 2008 and August 2010, has since admitted supplying lists of members and their details in return for payment.

She also made calls to the tax credit helpline to obtain application packs.
Further investigation revealed the fraudsters had used the details to create false identities, buy online insurance and open false bank accounts to receive the cash.

The profits of the scam were then transferred out into either their own accounts or through Western Union facilities set up by Sanni and Emmanuel Odeyemi.

Jurors were told that two of the gang, Stephen Odeyemi and his wife Oluwatumininu Banjo, 40, have fled to Nigeria and are wanted abroad.

Ms Hunter said: ‘These individuals conspired together to obtain in excess of £10,260,525.33 in fraudulent tax credits using the identities of 10,300 police officers, MPs, members of the judiciary, and civil servants for example, whose personal data and information was stolen from the Civil Service Sports Council.

‘The CSSC provides leisure events and activities together with sporting and fitness facilities to approximately 120,000 Public Sector employees or pensioners, including civil servants, local government employees, the NHS, teachers, police officers, fire fighters and HM Armed Forces personnel.’
Sanni, of Moorland Road, Leeds, denied but was convicted of one count of conspiracy to become knowingly concerned in a fraudulent act between 10 March 2009 and 11 June 2013.

Adedamola Oyebode, of Knapmill Road, Bellingham, southeast London, and Chantelle Gumbs were handed suspended sentences, while Stephen Odeyimi of Grafton Road, Dagenham was jailed for three and a half years.

Oluwatumininu Banjo, of Grafton Road, Dagenham, and Stephen Odeyemi, of Palmer Avenue, Gravesend, are believed to be on the run in Nigeria.

Media practitioners advised to imbibe data journalism
1:31:19 PMadekunle

Abuja – Mr Joshua Olufemi, Programme Manager, Premium Times has advised media practitioners to imbibe the culture of data journalism due to technological advancement in the world.

Olufemi was a resource person at a four-day ongoing workshop of the International Center for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) in Abuja.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the workshop on Saturday that data journalism was not a replacement of traditional journalism but an improvement to it.

Olufemi said that data journalism was a new skill for searching, understanding and visualising digital sources in a time that basic skills from traditional journalism proved inadequate.

"In a time where sources go digital, journalists can and have to be closer to those sources. The Internet has opened up possibilities beyond our current understanding.

"Data journalism is just the beginning of evolving our past practices to adapt to online and the internet; from the standpoint of a regional newspaper, data journalism is crucial.

"At the same time, digitisation is everywhere because local newspapers have this direct impact on their environments, sources become digitalised," he said.

Olufemi explained that a journalist must know how to find, analyse and visualise a story with data.

He said that data journalism serve important purpose for news organisations, especially to find unique stories in order to execute the watchdog function.

"News stories are flowing in as they happen from multiple sources, eye-witnesses, blogs and what has happened is filtered through a vast network of social connections, being ranked, commented and more often than not, ignored.

"This is why data journalism is so important. Gathering, filtering and visualising what is happening beyond what the eye can see has a growing value," he said.

So what if you're having an affair with your friend's husband!?
1:26:32 PMOkogba

OVER the years, the myth that getting older kills a woman's sex life has been rubbished by women in their late and early fifties who've constantly shown that this period has been the most passionate, exciting and sensual years yet. I was with friends and taking stock of the wild parties we'd attended over the last few months and wondering what method of detox to settle for when in breezed Muni, a friend of several years, thought not a close one.

She swept my pleasantries aside and declared: "We think you should have a word with your friend, Joan," she said, her nostrils flared. Here comes trouble, I said silently. Joan could hardly be called a good friend. I'd known her for years and, if you readers recall, she was the one who pretended she lost a necklace on one of our weekends away, hoping the host would pay for the tinsel she tried to pass off as real gold.

Years after, she was after CTB, pretending she wanted a favour from him and asking me to give her his phone number! Just how brazen can you get?

So what seemed to be the problem now? Joan has turned into a real barracuda and is having a pick of friends' husbands if she wants to graze, shouldn't she be doing it further afield from home? This was quite interesting. Keeping a straight face, I didn't let on what problems Joan had taken me through in the past but I promised to have a word with her. Joan is the type of girl you see only when she needs a favour from you. Curiosity made me ring her as soon as Muni left, and she enthusiastically agreed for me to come to her place the next day after work. She was really glowing as she entertained me lavishly.

"So, what's this rumour going the rounds that you're having a pick of friends' husbands?" I asked her. We've always been straight with each other and

she shrieked with triumphant laughter. "So, who's complaining?" I told her. "Let Muni complain all she likes" she told me smugly. She's always been too smug for my liking and is always blabbing about how promiscuous I was. She must have blabbed to her husband because the day I ran into him at a friend's place, he looked at me in a very curious way, flattering me to high heavens. I was a bit put out by this show of affection and was on my way when he offered to see me off.

"You look really smashing you know, he said, a bit nervous, yet excited. 'I've always found you so sexy!' I was a bit angry at first but then I thought of his hoity-toity wife and gave him my phone number when he asked for it. I was determined to get back at Muni for always disapproving of me. He didn't

waste time hiring me into my bedroom when he called the next day, where I showed him every sinful trick I'd learnt over the years. He left with a dazed smile on his face – and I've seen him a couple of times since then. He's quite hot, really! So, when your Muni whines that I should settle down, I smile quietly to myself that if she only knew the truth, she wouldn't be preaching to me so smugly. Rather, she would save her breath for her husband!

"I was married before, as you well know, before my husband ran away with an old friend. Well, I'm not loosing sleep over that. My children are grown and have done well for themselves. I'd always had a high sex drive and I told myself a long time ago that I only had one life and I was bent on not wasting it! That was when 1 decided to make life as exciting as I possibly could. I put in daring extensions to my hair, invested in clothes and shoes and, soon, my confidence was soaring. After years of getting sexually frustrated by my ex, 1 was ready to conquer the world – my libido was on the rampage.

"I was apprehensive about my ability to lure men to my bed, but I ran into a lot of them at parties and in the course of my business that it was such a turn- on choosing among all these lovely men. I accepted a lot of dates and once they realized all I wanted was fun, they were quite happy to take me out to dinner and for drinks. Then we'd rush to my place and greedily have deserts or whatever to top up the night! After such a long time without sexual satisfaction, I was suddenly getting through a couple of them a week. I have – made love in the shower, on the kitchen table – everywhere.

A few of my lovely men have taken me to posh hotel suites for the night where we drank lovely wine. I felt amazing – felt young and vibrant. The mistake I made was confiding in some of our friends. At first, they were half-teasing, saying they envied me but I could sense they were disapproving. It was then that I noticed I was being invited to their houses less and less.

It was at this time that snooty Muni purposely called round to my place to lecture me on my I sinful' lifestyle. She wanted me to join her Pentecostal church, saying "you don't have to degrade yourself like this," and quoting from the Bible to buttress her point. I was enraged. Why was it degrading to enjoy a man wanting you, bedding you and making you feel alive again? I told her to get out of my house, that I didn't need 'saving' and was quite capable of living my own life. So, why come crying to you when she couldn't get through to me? One favour she did me was making me realize it was only sensible to keep my sex lifestyle to myself. Living alone, there was no one to check up on me anyway. That was why when Muni's husband showed interest, I helped myself to his services. I wish someone would tell Muni and watch her bum with fury!"

Anti-sexuality education campaign: NAPPS decries parents' low turnout in FCT
1:14:56 PMNwafor Polycarp

The ‎National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS)‎ has decried the low turnout of parents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the walk out campaign against comprehensive sexuality education ‎in the territory.

The President of the association, Mrs Samira Jubir, made the remark in Abuja on Saturday during the campaign.

Jubir said the parents were expected to turn out in large numbers and raise one voice against child abuse and comprehensive sexuality education in the territory.

The president explained that the walk out campaign became necessary so as to inculcate values in the Nigerian children "because they are the leaders of tomorrow".

"We want the parents to be part of efforts to control what their children watch on Television.

"How their children use the social media and the need to protect their children and the kind of books they read.

"We need to raise one voice of protecting the Nigerian children against the exposure to uncensored technology, social media, child abuse and contents of comprehensive sexual education that are not worth it,'' she said.

Violence, threats won't quell separatism – Atiku
12:51:37 PMTony

By Anthony Ogbonna

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has advised Nigerians to eschew violence and threats, especially to elders, warning that such won't quell separatism.

The Ex-Vice President gave the advise following the recent hate speeches and threats to some regions and especially, allegedly, to some high individuals like to the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, by some persons in the country.

It is of note that in the last few months, some hate speeches have been emanating from different quarters, beginning with the quit notice issued some Nigerians of Igbo extraction by some Arewa youths who said Ndigbo must leave the northern region before October 1st or face physical attacks.

Atiku Abubakar

Similarly, the overall leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who has been released on bail from jail has also, recently, been quoted as making a hate speech against Obasanjo after the Former President said he had no apology but has explanation to give while the recent separatist movements in the country ought to stop.

According to Obasanjo, "What lesson can we learn? The lesson we can learn is that we have had enough tragedies in this country.
"So far, since 1999, it seems that we have got it right. Let us hope that we continue to get it right and learn that Nigeria has had enough of bloodshed, enough of sacrifices by those victims, that Nigeria deserves peace, unity and progress.

"Maimalari was a man who was very interested in the welfare of his men during a peacekeeping mission in Congo, a situation that led to him having issues with some few. He was a soldier's soldier.

"If Maimalari had lived to head the Nigerian Army, to the best of my own knowledge, Nigeria would have been better for it. "Lesson to be learnt from Maimalari's death- this country had had trained officers who would have been of benefit to this country, but cut out at the prime of their lives, and our lesson should be that this should never happen again.

"I have no apology but I have explanation. It's because it's necessary to stop this sort of things that took the life of your father prematurely, that we had to take the decision that all those who have tasted power, that they should never have tasted, of political office that we should ease them out of the Army so that we can have an Army that is free from political aberration.

"And since 1999, I think we have got it right, let us hope that we have got it right and learn the right lessons. Nigeria has had enough bloodshed, sacrifices and Nigeria deserves peace, unity and progress.

"And may be the sacrifices of the like of Brigadier General Maimalari be sufficient to give this country peace, development, unity and progress," said Obasanjo.

However, addressing his co-Biafran supporters in one of their gatherings, Mazi Kanu was quoted to have used derogatory words and even threats on the ex-President.

But Atiku Abubakar, while condemning the hate and threats generally said, "It’s important for Nigerians to respect leaders who played defining roles in Nigeria’s development. Threats of violence help no one’s cause!

He also said that "Violence and threats won’t quell separatism. The more Nigeria moves towards social justice, the more Nigeria shifts away from separation."

Also in one of his writeups, Atiku advised that, “The number one problem plaguing Nigeria is not corruption or even the absence of regular power. The number one problem militating against the progress of Nigeria is her lack of unity. If we can fix this problem, Nigeria will herself be fixed.”

11 killed during botched circumcision in South Africa
12:08:13 PMadekunle

Cape Town – Eleven teenagers have died of botched circumcision within two weeks during the winter initiation season in South Africa, authorities said on Saturday.

• Female circumcision has no known health benefit, yet it is still widely practiced in Nigeria and other African countries.

According to Provincial Department of Traditional Affairs, all the deaths are in Eastern Cape Province, a hotbed of circumcision-related deaths.

"The death toll of initiates in a short period is alarming,'' Fikile Xasa from the department said.

He added that the deaths occurred in spite of "Zero Deaths" campaign launched by the government.

Government-dispatched teams were currently monitoring the situation across the country, according to Community Development Foundation of South Africa (CDFSA), which deals with the safety of initiates.

It, however, said over 22 boys were rescued from illegal initiation schools in the province.

The department stated that six other initiates died in the province when their initiation school caught fire, noting that their funeral was held on Saturday.

Circumcision is viewed a sacred practice in African cultures, marking a male's transition from child to adulthood.

In South Africa, young males must traditionally be circumcised as passage to manhood.

According to the CDFSA, over 70 boys died at initiation schools in 2016 and scores of others were hospitalised in the Eastern Cape alone.

Migrants from Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana feared drowned off Libya

Thirty-five migrants, including seven children, were feared drowned after their inflatable boat sank on Saturday off the Libyan coast, the coastguard said.

Eighty-five migrants, including 18 women, were rescued with the help of fishermen who alerted the coastguard, said Issa al-Zarrouk, a coastguard official in Garabulli, 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Tripoli.

Navy spokesman Ayoub Kacem said the boat sank six nautical miles northwest of Garabulli, and 10 fishing boats took part in the rescue.

The rescued migrants were from countries including Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, the Ivory Coast and Ghana, Kacem said.

Nigerian hairdresser Vivian Effoussa described watching, horrified as fellow passengers fell into the sea.

“The boat we entered was leaking,” said Effoussa, who attempted the crossing to Europe after struggling to support two children back home.

“All of a sudden… the water was (coming) inside. Everybody started shouting,” she said, speaking in English.

“Gradually, gradually, we see ourselves inside the sea. Everybody, we’re falling inside, dragging each other. They even pulled my hair, dragging me.”

“Really, I didn’t think the sea was big like this,” Effousa said, adding that, had she known, she would not have come.

Human traffickers have exploited years of chaos in Libya since the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed dictator Moamer Kadhafi to boost their lucrative but deadly trade.

Tens of thousands of migrants have resorted to paying smugglers to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Libya to what they hope will be a better life in Europe.

Nearly 77,000 migrants have landed in Italy since January, up 15 percent on the same period in 2016.

Altogether, at least 2,247 people have died or are missing after trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe this year, the IOM says
