BY November 26, 2016, we will commence the seventh year of Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola's epic contributions as governor of the State of Osun. Hardly any governor in the hIstory of Nigeria has attracted controversy as this personality known popularly as Ogbeni.
At least not in the last 17 years that democracy resurfaced in Nigeria has any governor's actions and perhaps even speeches been prone to such testy public discussions.
And rightly so, because he, Aregbesola, did unique (or as he himself styled it, unusual) things that nobody dared to do before him, to the extent that not a few of his critics didn't quite appreciate. Although most people who are beneficiaries of his programmes kept faith in what Aregbesola did and is capable of doing.
Before he was sworn-in as governor on November 26, 2010, lawlessness and insecurity of life and property were existential concerns in Osun.
History will not only justify Aregbesola's ideas and programmes, it will vilify his critics. His mistakes will be acknowledged, but that will not diminish the quality and effect of his actions and service delivery
It was in this atmosphere of near anarchy that he introduced his unusual programmes and rebranding of the state. All hell broke loose, and the opposition also 'rebranded' him – so-to-speak – as an anarchist!
However, the 'confusion' that people, (especially his PDP opponents) who he defeated in the 2007 election accused him of introducing into governance, has become the catalyst for unprecedented transformation in the state of Osun today.
What Osun is now, in contrast to what it had been all of 19 years before the advent of Aregbesola's administration, is the difference that Aregbesola himself engineered. And what the future will become based on what the present is, shall in effect be the hIstorical perspective from which Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola would be holistically assessed.
History will not only justify Aregbesola's ideas and programmes, it will vilify his critics. His mistakes will be acknowledged, but that will not diminish the quality and effect of his actions and service delivery.
A post truth world
That is the context in which Ogbeni Aregbesola will be presented in the future that will tell the story of today. It would not matter that TRUTH flew out the window of today's reality. We are currently living in a post TRUTH world – in a time of collapse before the new spiritual era.
So, people like Ogbeni Aregbesola may not place rationally in the warped reality that untruth has created. That is the world in which PDP critics of Aregbesola, and those who back them operate and exist.
The simple way to recognise them is to listen to those critics in Osun who think that Aregbesola is the worst thing that ever happened to the state. They are the scoffers.
The discussion however, is not about these traducers, it is about the relevance and significance of the Ogbeni Aregbesola's appearance in the state of Osun's history.
As a journalist (a 'historian in a hurry'), and a lawyer, I owe my profession a duty to be on the side of truth. And if the truth be told, Rauf Aregbesola is the best thing, politically, socially, economically, and in terms of security, that Osun has ever known in its 25 years as a state in Nigeria.
You, my dear readers, don't have to believe me. To authenticate this assertion, you have to spend some time to investigate by coming to Osun to see things practically yourself and talk to people. That's only when you will access the truth.
Mankind is moving away from TRUTH. Lies or deceit or disinformation is the major news, because the negatively disposed make the headline news. That is why the enticing news you can read or hear or watch about Rauf Aregbesola in Osun is negative, salacious and horribly untruthful ones about the man. It is the nature of our collapsing world.
However, there are certain questions that should be answered; and we demand the right answers for them:-
If Aregbesola's ideas and programmes were as horrible as the opposition would suggest -;
Why would the British Parliament ask him to come explain how he was managing the school feeding programme?
Why would the Federal statistical record place primary school enrolment in Osun as the highest in Nigeria, if Aregbesola's education policies were wrong?
Why would the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics have confirmed that Osun is the best governed state in the country as it relates to human capital development index, poverty index, unemployment index and environmental cleanliness?
Why would the Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria in the state of Osun defy protocol to give credit to Aregbesola's policies that re-ignited economic activities in Osun like it had not been seen before?
Why did acknowledgement come from a Police Chief that Osun is the best secured state in the country?
These are just few questions that will lead you to a whole host of investigations that will produce results different from what Aregbesola's critics had been propagating.
Aregbesola has significantly convinced the people of Osun the his revolutionary agenda for CHANGE is producing not just prosperity but a new Osun that can compete and excel in economic, social and human capital development that stand a modern state out of the crowd.
We will be a part of that history when we give an account of APC Aregbesola-led government in 2018.
The story is still unfolding.

It’s back to Twitter barbs at the “nasty” and “unfair” news media. Two weeks after his election, Donald Trump’s relations with the press are as contentious as ever.
There is no honeymoon between the US president-elect and news organizations after a bruising campaign where the candidate dubbed journalists “thieves and crooks” and was himself labeled a “liar” on the news pages.
The Republican billionaire resumed his onslaught Monday during a closed-door session with high-ranking television executives where, despite expectations of fence-mending, he reportedly gave them a dressing-down over their coverage of the 2016 race.
On Tuesday, Trump cancelled then rescheduled a meeting with the New York Times, firing off a fresh broadside over what he called “nasty” coverage by his hometown daily.
The property tycoon, who has not held a news conference since his election, complained that the terms of the interview “were changed at the last minute,” an account the Times disputed.
Both Team Trump and the newspaper later confirmed the meeting was back on, after the two sides agreed on an off-the-record session with the paper’s publisher followed by an on-record interview.
The Times later reported that Reince Priebus, the incoming White House chief of staff, had misinformed Trump — telling him the terms had changed — in an apparent bid to prevent the interview, fearing he might face questions he is unprepared to answer.
Trump announced he would meet the influential daily after all in an upbeat tweet saying, “Look forward to it!”
But that followed a stream of hostile early morning tweets assailing what he called a “failing” paper for continuing to “cover me inaccurately and with a nasty tone!”
– ‘Blustering blowhard’ –
The dust-up with the Times came a day after Trump held an off-the-record chat with television executives and news anchors, with comments filtering out indicating Trump’s displeasure over coverage.
New Yorker editor David Remnick, citing sources attending the session, said Trump complained that NBC News used unflattering photos showing his double chin, and asked for “nicer” images.
Attendees said they were taken aback at the tone from the president-elect, who repeated claims of insulting and inaccurate coverage.
“I really am offended,” one of them was quoted as saying. “This was unprecedented. Outrageous!”
Far from sobered by his heavy new responsibilities as head of state, one participant was quoted as saying Trump “is the same kind of blustering, bluffing blowhard as he was during the campaign.”
Trump spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway offered a different version, calling the meeting “cordial” and “productive,” adding that “there was no need to mend fences.”
US news organizations dug into a host of Trump controversies as he campaigned for the world’s most powerful office.
These included allegations by women that he had harassed or sexually assaulted them, his past failures as a real estate developer and indications that he avoided paying taxes for years.
The Republican pushed back hard — charging the election was being “rigged by corrupt media pushing completely false allegations and outright lies” and colluding to hand victory to Democrat Hillary Clinton.
– ‘Wants to scare them’ –
Trump’s latest clashes with the media would seem to foreshadow a stormy relationship when he moves into the White House in January.
“I think he wants to scare them,” said Lucy Dalglish, dean of journalism at the University of Maryland:
“He wants to chill them. He is retaliating. He feels he was not treated fairly and he is trying to get them to cower. But that’s the last thing you want to do with some of these people.”
Some groups have already complained Trump has not yet guaranteed “pool” media access, as has been customary in recent history, where a small group of journalists accompanies the president-elect on all public events and meetings.
“It’s not the media that needs this, it’s the pubic, and he doesn’t seem to understand the role that an independent, freely functioning media plays in a democracy. And not to recognize that role is troubling,” said Dalglish.
Joel Kaplan, associate dean of journalism at Syracuse University, agreed that the media and Trump are in uncharted waters.
“There is no precedent for the relationship between Trump and the press,” Kaplan said.
“Even those (presidents) who didn’t have the best relationship going in understood the role of the press and tried to court individual members.”
Kaplan noted that Trump’s hand is helped by a deepening distrust of the news media by the US public, but claimed that should not be a reason to change coverage of the White House.
“I don’t think the general public can have a much lower opinion of the news media and honestly, the news media shouldn’t care,” he said.
“The role of the news media is to inform the public. Once that happens, the public is responsible for what it does with that information.”
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday said the State has a critical role to play in taking Nigeria out of the current economic doldrums, just as he harped on the need for partnership between government and the private sector to address strategic challenges confronting the nation.
Governor Ambode, who spoke at the Lagos House in Ikeja when he received on courtesy visit members of the Governing Council of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), who came to notify the Governor of the hosting right of the 22nd World Conference of Banking Institute to be held in Lagos in April 2017 and other activities of the Institute, said Lagos, as the economic hub of Nigeria and the West African region, contributes about 70 percent of the financial services in the country, and as such the State was in a good stead to lead the nation out of recession.
The Governor said the visit by the CIBN Council led by its President, Professor Segun Ajibola was apt as it came at a time that Nigeria was undergoing recession, but the cheering news was that the country was abundantly blessed with a group of people that can actually help the country out of recession, to which many of them are members of the Institute.
He, therefore, harped on the need for partnership between the government and the private sector, saying: “This is like a clearing call, we need this partnership to take us out of the doldrums. Irrespective of the fact that Lagos contributes like 70 percent of the financial services in this country and if there is anything that can take us out of recession, it has to start from us and from Lagos.”
Besides, Governor Ambode said the story of the growth and development of Lagos could not have been completed without the huge contribution of the financial service industry, adding that the sector remained a veritable vehicle that has been able to drive professionals to contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the State.
According to the Governor, “The financial service industry stands out in terms of creating employment for our people, and in terms of contributing to the taxes, and as well creating capacity, and as such it will be unfair not to appreciate and commend everything that the CIBN has actually done to the growth and development of Lagos.”
Speaking on the hosting right of the World Conference, Governor Ambode expressed excitement at the development, and assured that the State Government will partner with CIBN to use the platform to promote investment potentials in the State, as well as celebrate the 50 years anniversary of the creation of Lagos.
“Lagos is going to be 50 next year and President of the Council has talked so much about the hosting right of the conference. As a government, we are also trying to brand Lagos as a world class city to live in, and so we will partner and support the conference and list it as part of the events to celebrate Lagos at 50 and use it as a platform to promote financial tourism for the State.
“Lagos is the financial hub of Nigeria and by extension maybe the West African coast, and the good thing is that the infrastructure we have been able to provide are aimed at allowing businesses to thrive. We are trying our best but the fundamentals remained the fact that the city has to be safe so that businesses can thrive.
The Governor also expressed readiness to partner with CIBN to create a structured capacity building for State officials with the view to getting a stream of hardworking professionals.
Earlier, Ajibola commended Governor Ambode for the massive infrastructure development ongoing in the State, especially the improvement on security, the Light Up Lagos Project, ingenious traffic management strategy in strategic locations across the State such as the Iyana Oworo Lay-by, Ketu-Alapere Slip Road, multifaceted Berger expansion projects, Ojota Pedestrian Bridge; road rehabilitation, Light Rail Project, among others.
“As at today, the banking community is more than happy with the State of security in Lagos State. Our banks are now safer; our ATM locations are safer; we see secured human and properties more than ever before within Lagos and its environs,” Ajibola said.
Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) and Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Lagos State, Engineer Joe Igbokwe, Tuesday, vowed to stand with President Muhammadu Buhari, if he intends to run for a second term in 2019.
Reacting to yesterday’s statement by the Presidency, which stated that Nigerians would rally behind Buhari in 2019, Ndume said he would support Buhari for a second term.
His words: “I am behind President Muhammadu Buhari for 2019. Nigeria needs a leader like Buhari, as long as he is contesting in 2019, I stand by him. I urge Nigerians to stand by him; we need a leader that is incorruptible, matured, sincere, transparent and disciplined. We have an opportunity, we should not bring politics into it. The present recession was not brought by him. We need a leader that has integrity, we need a leader and Buhari is the leader.
On his part, Igbokwe said for now, only Buhari can be trusted.
According to him, “Who would have thought that President Buhari will make fellow generals to return their loots and face trials? Who would have thought that the untouchable called judges in Nigeria will be brought down to give account of their stewardship? Who would have thought that a day will come when fraudulent politicians will be forced to return billions? Now, if the truth must be told, President Buhari has no competitor, he is the only man standing for that position in 2019. We cannot trust any other person for now. He must finish clearing the Augean stable.”
A group saddled with advocacy for Advancement, Development and sustenance of Democracy in Nigeria, Wailing Wailers, has, Tuesday, said that President Buhari will not run in 2019 general elections.
In a statement issued to newsmen and signed by the group’s Acting National Publicity Secretary, Usman Abubakar, it said that the president must go on retirement in 2019 for haven plunged the nation’s buoyant economy into recession.
"Our attention has been drawn to the news from Presidency stating that President Buhari who under 2 years of his rulership collapsed Nigerian economy and every other system of the country, is nursing an unscrupulous ambition of running for a second tenure in 2019."
"We believe that this call is a joke or a figment of the imagination of those working for the presidency as they will not want to miss all the benefits and the paraphernalia they currently enjoy at the expense of the suffering masses to come to an end."
"Just days ago, Nigeria recorded 18.3% Inflation and 2.4% drop in GDP for the Q3. The economy is in total ruin, and this warrants us to ask, what business buhari has with 2019 when the first mandate given to him has been marred with incompetence and bad governance ?"
"We all agree that Buhari was handed the biggest economy in Africa with over $600 Billion, one of the fastest growing in the world reported by CNN in 2015, within 18 months, it was ran aground into inflation and recession."
"How can a man with no basic leadership and managerial skill continue to plunge the country into comatose and the people not react?"
"Buhari believes that it is his birth right to foist himself on the people of Nigeria, whether we like it or not?"
"Those pushing for Buhari’s 2019 agenda are certainly an enemy of the Nigerian people, and will henceforth be seen and treated as such. It is irreconcilable that a man who has plunged Nigeria into unrecoverable recession, depression, inflation and famine should run for a second tenure."
"We as a group saddled with advocacy for Advancement, Development and sustainance of Democracy in Nigeria, call on President Buhari to resign and hand over power to National Assembly, because he does not have what it takes to take Nigerians out of the economic doldrums he has plunged the country into through his bad leadership."
"From the foregoing, Buhari cannot run for presidency in 2019. He must go now on retirement, back to his farm in Daura."
"Those sycophants (hailing hailers) calling on him to run again should quit their wishful thinking because, the people of Nigeria are tired of his incompetence and bad governance."
"We call on the world leaders to intervene in this problem facing Nigeria because, it is obvious that Buhari has perfected the plans to forcefully impose himself on Nigerians regardless of his bad policies and bad leadership which has ruined the nation."
"He has placed his families in Independent National Electoral Commission, The ARMY, The Nigeria POLICE Force, Custom, National Security Services and all other agencies that will carry out his ambition and execute the task for him to run."
"Notice should be taken that as part of Buhari’s 2019 plot, he has conducted rigging mock test with Kogi state, Edo state and if possible Ondo state election where the states were massively rigged, and to be rigged in favor of his faction of All Progressive Congress (APC)."
"Other party leaders who can stand in his ways have been decimated and blackmailed out of the party for an easy ride in the future elections."
"Buhari imagines that he has successfully concluded his plans towards 2019 because he succeeded in rigging states' elections without much resistance from the people because people are afraid and intimidated by the fear of being harassed and ruffled and manhandled by security forces which he, Buhari mainly uses to clamp down everyone that opposes his wishes."
"We therefore call on leaders around the world who cherish democracy to rise up and join the growing call of Nigerians saying #BuhariMustGo and help in defending the Democracy under the siege and grip of Buhari and his cronies."
"We also call on all well meaning Nigerians to stop the docility and rise up for once to put an end to the evil agenda of those who wants to make Nigeria a refugee camp because once famine sets in, Nigeria will be turned into what we can all consider as extremely poor nation."
"It is better for Buhari to go and we reclaim our nation back to the path of transformation and progress."
The management of Federal Inland Revenue Services, FIRS, has said it would deploy all legal means at its disposal, including criminal prosecution of board and management, to penalise organisations that fail to pay their tax.
Speaking at a KPMG Tax Breakfast meeting in Lagos, FIRS Executive Chairman, Mr Babatunde Fowler, urged taxpayers to file Companies Income Tax (CIT), Value Added Tax (VAT) and Withholding Tax (WHT) returns at any of its nearby location.
Fowler noted that taxpayers will be required to apply in writing to the tax controller of their current tax office of choice and request for transfer of their file and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) in accordance with its policy.
According to him, waiver granted to payers who do not owe personal property taxes in the financial year relate only to accumulated penalty and interest, and not the principal tax due.
"Based on this waiver, part payment/full payment of undisputed tax liabilities should be paid, while the balance can be paid in instalment. While a reasonable amount of not less than 25 percent, should be paid on account. Taxpayers are expected to provide evidence of payment of the principal undisputed tax liabilities and a payment plan for the outstanding sum," he explained.
Partner and Head Tax Regulatory and People Services of KPMG, Mr Wole Obayomi, on his part, stated that, "FIRS should invest more effort in the tracking of the informal sector as well, which can be as big as the formal sector when they are made to comply."
He recommended FIRS to ensure that right policies are put in place to enhance effective compliance, as well as improve tax tribunal.
By Emmanuel Elebeke The Federal Government has commended Nigerians for their resilience in the face of hardship the country is facing and has also taken the blame for the economic recession.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this in a keynote address at the 4th Commonwealth Public Relations Congress in Lagos.
He said that government shared in their pains and will make no excuses as it will continues to work round the clock to ensure that this tough time is quickly brought to an end.
Mohammed said that government was pleased with Nigerians for their resilience despite the tough times occasioned by the economic recession, assuring that the government remains focused on implementing realistic policies that will reverse the trend.
“We are not unaware of the harsh effects of the recession on the citizens. We share in their pains and we make no excuses as we continue to work round the clock to ensure that this tough time is quickly brought to an end. The good news is that the prognosis for a quick end to the recession is encouraging.
“As the saying goes, the recession is a bend in the road, not the end of the road. The challenge for us as a government is to turn the bend, and we are doing just that,” he said.
He said while the Buhari Administration rode to power on the crest of change, there can be no change without discomforts.
Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has described the government of President Muhammadu Buhari as shameless for saying Nigerians will rally behind the President in 2019.
Recall that the Presidency, Monday, dismissed suggestions that the masses will desert President Buhari in 2019, saying it's unfounded and utterly ridiculous.
Presidential spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, who was reacting to allegations by a former Congress for Progressive Change, CPC member, Alhaji Buba Galadima that President Buhari would be abandoned by the people in 2019, asserted that "ordinary Nigerians are the backbone of his (Buhari's) mandate and the only reason he ran for the office is to protect them against the rapacious merchants of corruption, who have held Nigeria back for decades."
However, reacting, Mohammed, said: "It is very unfortunate and shameless that a government that is yet to do anything is already talking of 2019. It is very unfortunate that a party like APC that is fast becoming moribund is already talking of 2019 when they have nothing to show for the four years Nigerians gave them. This development shows they are power-hungry, hypocritical and corruption-ridden.
"This entire 2019 discussion is ridiculous. I believe a government that has performed will rely on its performance before being considered for another four years in office. We are not even in the middle of the four-year term given to them and they are already talking of 2019. This is an unfortunate development and it shows the ineptitude of the government. For a man that has led us into the worst recession ever and has got nothing to show Nigerians since he assumed office to be talking of 2019, shows how shameless the government can be."
By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor The Nigerian-American community in the United States has called on Donald Trump, the United States president-elect, to capitalise on the goodwill that followed his election by projecting policies that would allay the fears of minority groups in the country.
The 2.3 million strong Nigerian-American community speaking through the Nigerian Union Diaspora, NUD, in a congratulatory letter to Mr. Trump, urged him to harness the potentials of Nigerian-Americans who the NUD celebrated as having the best qualifications in the professions among ethnic groups in the US.
The letter jointly signed by the Secretary General of the NUD, Dr. SKC Ogbonnia and Executive Director, Political Affairs, Bayo Oluwasanmi also drew Mr. Trump's attention to the great opportunities for trade and consolidation of relations between the United States and Nigeria.
The letter read in part:
"Mr. President-elect, as you stated in your victory speech, "Now it's time for America to bind the wounds of division;" and work together. This statement is especially important considering the divisive tone that characterized the long presidential campaign.
"We strongly encourage you, Sir, to capitalize on the post election goodwill and extend an open hand to all Americans, including minority groups, most of who were frightened by certain aspects of your campaign that were widely viewed, understandably, with apprehension. But with your pledge to "be president for all", Nigerian-Americans are emboldened to stand willing, ready, and able to do all we can on the enormous work of healing the country and building a better America for all its citizens. An America that works well for all the people is a pillar for global peace and stability.
"The Nigerian-Americans trace their history in the United States back to over centuries ago and have contributed immensely in all spheres of US national development. Today, as the most credentialed ethnic group in the United States, the great people of Nigerian descent have continued to exemplify leadership in the fields of research, education, healthcare, military, engineering, economics, job creation, among others. We hope that the Trump administration recognises this illuminating pedigree as it forges lasting relationships with not only Nigerians in America but also Nigeria as a nation. Besides being the flagship country of the African continent, Nigeria has the abundant resources to advance strong bilateral relations with the United States on mutually beneficial terms. The well-being of Nigeria on the African continent is the well-being of the people of Nigerian descent in America .
"Mr. President-Elect, as you become the leader of the most influential country in the world, the conscience of humanity beckons on you to lead an equitable and just administration devoid of prejudice based on race, gender, religion, ethnicity, and national origin. Posterity beckons on you, therefore, to break from the unfortunate past—to finally accord the Nigerian nation as well as the Nigerian Americans similar attention as other leading countries of other continents and their immigrants in the United States, including but not limited to policies on trade, immigration, terrorism, global security, economic opportunities, social issues, and human rights. Just policies on Africa will go a long way in binding "the wounds of division" that have existed between African-Americans in general and the larger American population.
"The Nigerian Union Diaspora (NUD) is the umbrella Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) for the social, economic, and political empowerment of the people of Nigerian descent outside Nigeria . With over 2.4 million in the United States alone, the NUD members contribute over $150 billion annually to the US national economy.
"We will be arranging a meeting with your office in due course to explore opportunities of working together starting from the transition period to the years ahead in the Trump administration.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday described the damaging of pipelines and oil installations in the Niger Delta as destruction of facilities meant to help the people of the region.
Osinbajo said this when he received a delegation of Urhobo leaders, led by Chief Tuesday Onoge at the Presidential Villa.
The vice president lamented that "so much damage is being done, governments will come and go, but these damages will ultimately destroy people's livelihoods, aspirations and future.
"Nobody else anywhere in the world will destroy the facilities meant to help them, there is no benefit whatsoever from the destruction", he stressed.
He maintained that the Buhari administration would continue its outreach to leaders and groups in the Niger Delta in seeking for peaceful solution to the crisis in the region.
Osinbajo, however, called for understanding, especially on the part of the leaders of the region, stressing that "destruction and damage do not lead to anything good".
He also commented on the opened channels of communication and negotiation with the Niger Delta leaders and representatives.
According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari has shown exemplary leadership and is someone that can be trusted once he gives his word.
"He (Buhari) is quiet, but fiercely determined, once he makes up his mind and gives his word," the vice president said and encouraged Niger Delta people to work with the President.
Osinbajo commended the delegation from the Urhobo Leaders of Thought, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in the 2015 elections, Olorogun Ortega Emerhor.
He also commended the leadership and understanding of the Urhobo Leaders of Thought.
Earlier, Onoge had lamented that if the money sent to the Niger Delta in the last 16 years was judiciously spent, the people of the region would have benefited, and asked "what happened to the monies?".
The leader of the delegation, who pledged support to the Federal Government, criticised the vandalism of oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta and offered to assist in furthering peace in the region.
He said that the group supported the anti-corruption efforts of the Buhari administration.
In a related development, the vice president disclosed that the Federal Government was ready with the counterpart funding for the designated railway constructions from Lagos-Kano and Calabar-Lagos lines.
He said this when the new Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Zhou Pingjian, paid him a courtesy visit on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said the relationship between Nigeria and China was getting stronger and strategic.
The Chinese envoy said trade between both countries had increased and described Nigeria as "giant of Africa". (NAN)
On the eve of Wednesday’s Champions League game at Borussia Moenchengladbach, Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola revealed captain Vincent Kompany could ‘be out for weeks’ with a knee injury.
City are chasing a win in Germany to put them in the last 16, but they must do so without their skipper.
Kompany, 30, went off with concussion during Saturday’s Premier League win at Crystal Palace, but also has knee-ligament damage.
“Kompany has a problem with his knee. He could be out for weeks. He’s sad and I’m sad,” said Guardiola.
Kompany has had calf, groin and thigh injuries in 2016 and has started just two league matches this season.
City, second in Group C behind leaders Barcelona, will book their knock-out phase place with another victory over Gladbach having won the reverse fixture 4-0 when Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick in mid-September.
The 28-year-old striker revels in clashes against German clubs.
He also scored on his last visit to Borussia Park in September 2015, converting a 90th-minute penalty to earn City a 2-1 win, and netted a hat-trick in a 3-2 victory at home to Bayern Munich in November 2014.
This is the first time Guardiola has returned to Germany for a competitive game since he quit Bayern Munich in May after winning seven titles in three seasons.
He rested Ilkay Gundogan against Palace and only used David Silva off the bench, a hint that both may feature at Borussia Park.
Even without Kompany, Guardiola has plenty of options as City look to build on their stunning 3-1 defeat of Barcelona three weeks ago.
“We were so happy with beating Barcelona, but it was just one game,” said Guardiola, who dismissed notions City are amongst the favourites to win next June’s final in Cardiff.
“We cannot be considered favourites to win.
“Maybe in ten years, but we need time to achieve that.
“Barca and Real Madrid are there every year.
“I am trying to do a lot in the next few years to be there.”
– win or bust –
In contrast, this is a case of win or bust for Gladbach’s Champions League aspirations.
An unlikely victory would lift Gladbach level with City on seven points before Borussia’s daunting final group match away to Barcelona on December 6.
Moenchengladbach will be confirmed in third place — which means a passage into the knock-out phase of the Europa League — if they draw and Celtic lose at home to Barcelona, also on Wednesday night.
“We are the rank outsiders,” admitted Gladbach coach Andre Schubert.
“Manchester have the chance of reaching the semis or even the final.
“We have the chance of going into the (January) winter break in the Europa League. That’s our goal.”
Gladbach are not in good form.
Their 2-1 defeat at home to Cologne on Saturday left them 13th in Germany’s top flight.
They have won just one of their last six home games — a German Cup victory over second-division VfB Stuttgart.
But Schubert’s team led Barcelona at Borussia Park until two second-half goals dug Barca out of trouble for a 2-1 win in September.
Gladbach need another brave performance at home.
“Manchester are continually developing,” said Schubert.
“They are now pressing defences even higher and we have to show we have learnt our lesson from the first game.”
By Charles Kumolu BORNO State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, has said that the decision to honour the late Lt. Col Muhammad Ali was informed by the bravery with which the deceased protected Nigeria's territorial integrity.
He also said that for paying the supreme price, Borno would remain indebted to the fallen soldier, who was killed in Malam-fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of the state by Boko Haram insurgents.
Shettima said that having evaluated the sacrifice made by the slain soldier, the state was left with the option of identifying with him in death. Hence, the presentation of N10 million cheque to the family during a condolence visit to their Unguwar Sarki residence in Kaduna, last Saturday. This gesture, which came 12 days after he attended the funeral was specifically made to the deceased's widow, three children, and mother.
At the event which afforded Shettima the opportunity of interacting with the bereaved family, the governor presented a Zenith Bank cheque of N10m issued in the name of the widow.
Accordingly, N2million was meant for the widow while N2 million was set aside for the mother of the fallen officer. Each of the deceased's three children had N2 million which would be kept in their accounts.
Addressing the family, Shettima said: "The late Lt. Col. Muhammad Abu Ali gave Borno everything. He worked hard in leading troops to recover many communities and at the end he paid the supreme price by giving his life for us. The least we can do to him as people of Borno State is to not only pray for the repose of his soul but also to support those who depended on him for their livelihood. I am concerned about his immediate family that includes his three children, his widow, and his mother. This money cannot replace his life. No amount can replace human life. We only want to support his family in the ways we can as humans. Please let us know if you need any more help. “We will stand by this family and the families of our fallen heroes. I think one of the things that should console this family is the legacy the commanding officer has left behind. May Allah admit him and all those that died for Borno and this country, into paradise. Please accept our sympathy, we share your emotions and all Nigerians share this irreparable loss. It is a big loss for us in Borno because the late officer was doing us a great service that we miss."
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has presented land title documents to benefitting staff of Zone one Headquarters Kaduna, with a promise for more welfare programmes.
According to the FRSC’s Head Media Relations and Strategy, Bisi Kazeem, Oyeyemi gave the assurances in Kaduna state sector command while presenting Land Title Documents to one hundred (100) beneficiaries of land acquisition scheme under the "One staff, One house project," being executed by the Post Service Scheme (PSS)
The Corps Marshal expressed satisfaction with the level of success recorded by the scheme within a short time, calling on staff to invest more in their future. He noted that fear of retiring into penury and homelessness accounted for why many staff hesitate to retire after completing their years of service.
According to him, his Management decided to take the decision to introduce the policy in view of the plight of such staff, stating that with the success so far recorded through the medium term loan, auto loan and landed property, the initial cynicism expressed by some staff has given way to hope and confidence in the scheme. "The Post Service Scheme (PSS) is a novel idea that was initiated based on the belief that as public servants, we must not consume all that we have today, but plan and save some for the rainy day when we would be out of service," he stated.
The Corps Marshal pointed out that PSS came out of Management's realization that many staff that retired from service easily became distressed due to lack of personal savings and difficulties associated with accessing pensions on retirement. "With this reality, I made up my mind to break the jinx by instituting a programme of gradual contribution by staff towards their days of retirement," he further stated.
The Corps Marshal reiterated his commitment to ensuring that no staff looses a kobo contributed into the scheme, saying the various programmes and projects being initiated to address immediate and long term financial challenges of the staff have been well thought out by the Board of Trustees. "These projects have been carefully selected after a careful study to determine their importance to the realization of staff's immediate and long term welfare needs," he stated.
"I want to reassure you all that we would not rest on our oars but continue to work hard to come out with more ideas that could alleviate the sufferings of the staff and motivating them for improved productivity," the Corps Marshal added.
The FRSC Boss further noted that in line with the accountability posture of his Management, staff are constantly being updated of their monthly contributions, adding that alert and mails stating their contribution have been activated. "Consequently, every staff is expected to receive monthly alert based on the deductions made from the salaries," he stated.
"To ensure unhindered feedback mechanism, telephone numbers are equally provided for further clarifications in case there are grey areas.
"All these measures are meant to build the confidence and trust of the staff in the system with a view that it would encourage staff to believe that nothing would happen to their contributions," he further stated
The Zonal Commanding Officer, Zone one, Kaduna, Assistant Corps Marshal Bulus Darwang who welcomed guests to the event commended the Corps Marshal for the initiative. He pointed out that the success of the scheme is evidenced by the number of beneficiaries that had so far accessed the various facilities as evidenced in the presentation of land title documents to staff of the Kaduna Zone. He further stated that even though many staff were initially skeptical about the policy when initially concaved, the success so far recorded has proved them wrong.
"At the commencement of this scheme, a lot of staff were cynical and had some misgivings about the projects, success and its sustainability. But two years down the line, the cynicism and misgivings have been cleared and the success story is now on the lips of every staff," he stated.
Assistant Corps Marshal Darwang called on the Management to give special consideration for the Kaduna Zone when future welfare schemes are being implemented in order to cater for the large number of commands and staff that fall under the zone.
Some of the beneficiaries of the land scheme who spoke at the event expressed happiness at their being considered, and expressed confidence with the way the scheme was being managed.
Post Service Scheme is an initiative of the FRSC Management by which staff contribute certain percentage of their salaries which would be paid back to them on their retirement from the Corps. Under the scheme, the contributed funds are invested into Medium Term Loan, Auto Loan and Landed property for staff who are expected to repay back within a stipulated time very low interest in the efforts to address immediate and long term welfare needs of the staff.
Abuja – Mr. Babatunde Fashola Minister of Power, Works and Housing, has warned Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCos) to stop blackmailing the Federal Government over outstanding debts allegedly owed them by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA).
A statement in Abuja on Tuesday by Mr Hakeem Bello, Special Adviser, Communications to the minister, stated that Fashola gave the warning at a meeting with power sector operators in the country.
Fashola was reacting to the advertorial placed by the Association of Electricity Distributing Companies (AEDC) on the debt owed DisCos by MDAs.
Fashola said government would not succumb to blackmail and would only pay verified debts.
Fashola also advised the DisCos to pursue the debt issue in their capacities as Discos and not under the aegis of any association.
He said that although the constitution guaranteed freedom of association, the privatisation that resulted in the transfer of the distribution assets of power was not held between the Federal Government and any association.
According to the minster, the DisCos have so far failed to provide details of such debts for verification.
Fashola said "Let me say without any equivocation that government will not succumb to the blackmail, at least not the Federal Government of Nigeria".
He said that government had provided an online platform where it requested all the DisCos to submit details of their debts to that platform for government to verify it.
" I think that advert should have told Nigerians how many DisCos have complied with that instruction. That advert should also have told Nigerians how much was owed and to which DisCo."
"So while I respect the rights of association, indeed our constitution allows freedom of association.
"But the Nigeria government will not pay its debts estimated to be about N100 Billion under the aegis of an association.
"That is not how to resolve debts, every DisCo knows how much power it supplied.
"Debts are not calculated by estimates. It is either N100 billion or less than N100 billion but not an estimate," the minister said.
He promises to respond on behalf of government to provide the other side of information, any time the DisCos go to the public without giving them the full information.
Apex youth legislative body in Nigeria, the Nigerian Youth Parliament, NYP, has commended the National Assembly, particularly the leadership of the Senate led by Senate President Bukola Saraki for the timely intervention on the strike action currently embarked by university lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The NYP, in a statement by its Speaker, Rt. Hon. Obe Ayodele, said: “We, on behalf of the youths of Nigeria are particularly impressed with the ingenious moves of rising up for the future of our dear nation which the Nigerian Senate has demonstrated with the ongoing negotiations between the legislative arm on behalf of the Federal Government and the Labour Union which has progressed steadily in the last few days towards finding a long term resolution to the recurrent impasse and crisis of strike actions which has often times paralyzed the nations educational sector.
“Without doubt, the downtool we believe has been brought about by years of inconsistent government policies on education, the payment of lip service to sound policy implementation and the total lack of commitment and overall neglect to such critical sector as education which happens to be the very bedrock of societal growth and development in any serious Nation.
“While we cannot but sympathize with the plight of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and also align ourselves with its demands particularly those that have to deal with infrastructural development, we also passionately appeal that the option of consultation and dialogue with all relevant stakeholders be considered as against repeated strike actions which endangers the life and future of innocent Nigerian Students.
“We will like to use this medium to encourage Senate President Bukola Saraki to continue to display his staunch affection and commitment for the welfare of the average Nigerian Student and Youth towards final resolution of the crisis and ensure that the demands of the lecturers are adequately met not just via short term embellishments but also to use his good office to prioritize funding for education in the 2017 Appropriation Act as obtainable in developed Nations of the world.
“We also implore the National Assembly as an institution to invest time and energy immensely on the educational sector by promulgating bills and laws that support good educational policies; ensure timely and consistent implementation and oversight on appropriated funding. Furthermore, We call on the Federal Government and its relevant agencies to as a matter of urgency fashion out best possible ways of implementing sustainable educational policies in line with current economic realities.”
“At this Critical point with the exponentially increasing rates of Nigerian graduates, rising rates of unemployment in the midst of dwindling economic activities in the country, we also call on concerned authorities to as a matter of urgency inculcate entrepreneurship and skill development into our school curricula from the Primary, Secondary to Tertiary Institutions,” added Ayodele.
The Delta State Government, yesterday, said it will, in due course, respond to the emergency relief being sought by residents of Obiaruku, a town in Ukwani Local Government Area of the state, where thunder storm devastated no fewer than 50 buildings last Thursday.
The natural disaster which claimed no life but left many residents injured, also destroyed several economic trees, electric poles and a church auditorium.
Fielding questions from journalists shortly after an inspection of the area, the state Commissioner, Bureau for Special Duties, Hon. Chika Ossai said the development is worrisome to the state government which, he said, is ready to assist the rehabilitation efforts of the victims.
Ossai, who led an inspection team of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to the area, regretted that the disaster took its toll on the residents at a time when national and state earnings are drastically receding.
“We have come to inspect the area and ascertain the impact of damage caused by the storm. We sympathize with them (victims). This is a recession period as we all know and it is unfortunate that this kind of thing (disaster) occurred in this time, but we urge the victims to be calm and prayerful because government will surely come to their aid”, he said.
The Commissioner who explained that the damage may be unconnected with structural deficiency, urged the victims, particularly the affected ecclesiastical body, to continually hope in God and commence their rehabilitation efforts even as the state government makes prompt efforts to respond to their needs.
“The concern of government is to see how to partner with the affected people to give them a new lease of life. I will advise that all those who can put up preliminary measures like repairs should do that, but that does not mean government won’t come to their aid”, he said.
In an interview, the law maker representing Ukwani Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Alphosus Ojo told newsmen that the disaster has had devastating consequences on his constituents, pointing out that unless the displaced persons where rehabilitated, a possible outbreak of communicable diseases is looming in the area.
Acknowledging the subsisting economic shortfall in the country, Ojo expressed confidence in the managerial skills of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in efficiently deploying the scarce resources of the state to tackle the challenge which, he opined, needs urgent attention.
On his part, the Councilor representing ward nine in the Ukwani Local Government Council, Hon. Kester Madu disclosed that about 25 of the affected buildings suffered a colossal damage from the storm, calling on the state government to urgently rise up to the situation.
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA – The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, said there was no truth in the allegation that it operates a secret account from which its Justices, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, benefited from illegal withdrawal of funds.
The apex court, via a press statement signed by its Director, Press and Information, Dr. Akande Festus, maintained that salaries and allowances paid to its Justices were “either provided for or alluded to in the ‘Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders [Salaries and Allowances, etc.] [Amendment] Act, 2008’.
It stated that the 2008 Amendment Act, among other things, made provisions for upward review of the annual basic salaries, allowances and fringe benefits of the Justices, adding that all approvals by the previous CJNs regarding allowances of apex court Justices, was in tandem with provisions of the Act and other extant laws.
It said the last approval which is still in operation, was done on July 13, 2010, through an Internal Memo with Ref. No. CJN/JAF/39/7.
In its bid to set the record straight, the apex court, revealed that its Justices individually collect the sum of $23, 400 as estacode per annum, as well as another £10, 000 as medical allowances.
According to the Supreme Court, “The pegging of this annual medical fee at £10,000 was a product of high discretion and commendable financial prudence to guard against a situation where varying medical bills that could even be as high as £50,000 or more would be submitted for reimbursement”.
It said contrary to “erroneous reports” being fed to public, lawyers working at the Supreme Court are only paid N400, 000 Barrister Annual Robbing Allowance, while the Deputy Chief Registrars collect N500, 000.
Two weeks on from his election victory, Donald Trump shows every sign that he will govern as he campaigned — with late night tweet storms, attacks on the press and a flirtation with the extremes of US political life.
True, the president-elect has backed off a threat to have his defeated opponent Hillary Clinton investigated. And, in calls with foreign leaders, he has reassured them that military alliances are not in danger.
But his first appointments were red meat to his fans on the so-called “alt-right,” he maintains a stream of taunting tweets and — in his latest provocation — he offended a key ally by urging Britain to swap its ambassador for a friend of his.
In a video laying out priorities for his first 100 days in office Trump made no mention of building a wall on the Mexican border, but an advisor was photographed bringing him a plan to stringently vet Muslim travelers.
In common with his predecessors, the Republican billionaire has been in no hurry to name a cabinet, leaving the reporters gathered under his Trump Tower office in New York chasing after rumors as he holds court above.
And if the Washington political class was expecting Trump the populist provocateur of the campaign trail to use his hiring choices to move to the institutional mainstream, it could well be disappointed.
– Economic nationalist –
Trump did indeed hire political insider Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus as his White House chief of staff to, in the words of one transition team official, “make the trains run on time.”
But the day’s headlines were dominated by the parallel appointment of self-described “economic nationalist” Steve Bannon as Trump’s head of strategy, a move hailed by extremist fringe groups.
Trump’s first cabinet pick was to nominate Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions — who opposes maintaining the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a landmark in federal civil rights legislation — as attorney general.
And his choice to lead the CIA, Representative Mike Pompeo, believes US intelligence agencies should be free to intercept Internet traffic and telecoms metadata from foreigners and US citizens alike.
Trump’s chosen National Security Adviser, retired general Mike Flynn, is a former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency best known for dining with Vladimir Putin and for taunting Clinton with chants of “Lock her up!” at Trump campaign rallies.
Moderate ears did prick up when Republican former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, a stern Trump critic during the campaign, was invited to one of the president-elect’s golf clubs at the weekend.
Romney, a familiar moderate conservative figure since his failed 2012 presidential bid, would be a reassuring choice as secretary of state for many US allies around the world.
But Romney — who has called Trump a phony and a con man — left the course without anything being announced, and Trump loyalist and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani is also in running for the post.
– British provocateur –
In the meantime, without a chief diplomat, Trump has been conducting US foreign relations solo, reaching out to British Prime Minister Theresa May’s government on Monday with a startling suggestion.
“Many people would like to see @Nigel_Farage represent Great Britain as their Ambassador to the United States. He would do a great job!” he tweeted, referring to the former leader of the opposition UK Independence Party, a Trump ally.
Farage, a provocateur whose party has only one seat in the British parliament, revelled in the attention, but Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was less impressed, insisting there was “no vacancy”.
“We have a first rate ambassador in Washington doing a very good job,” Johnson told MPs. Kim Darroch, Britain’s former national security adviser, took over the post in January.
Trump has also renewed his feud with much of the US media, reportedly berating TV network bosses at an off-the-record meeting on Monday then, on Tuesday, cancelling then reviving talks with the “failing New York Times” in a Twitter rant.
But why would Trump, a 70-year-old billionaire and reality television star whose defiance of political norms led him to win the world’s highest office in his first foray into an election, change now?
According to two opinion polls published Tuesday, a majority of voters are optimistic that his efforts to “make America great again” will lead the nation to a brighter future.
According to data from Quinnipiac University, most voters think he should stop tweeting but, by a margin of 59 to 37, most “are optimistic about the next four years with Donald Trump as president.”
– Time to give thanks –
A similar CNN/ORC poll found a narrow majority, 53 percent of voters, found Trump would do a good job.
Trump advisers would not rule out or rule in any nomination announcements Tuesday, when the president-elect was otherwise due to meet executives and columnists from The New York Times.
After that, he was due to take a family Thanksgiving break at another of his golf resorts, in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
I've heard plenty of stories about women who don't want to have sex, but what if it's your husband who has little interest? Mine has no physical problems, no extramarital affairs that I know of – he's just never in the mood. How should I deal with this? Nkechi, by e-mail.
Dear Nkechi,
Sexual mismatch is one of the most common conflict in couples. It's pretty rare that both partners want the same amount of sex at the same time. As you pointed out, people assume it's usually the wife saying "not tonight" and the husband getting hurt and angry, but many couples suffer from his loss of libido and her pain at being turned down. Men, like women, can lose interest when they're stressed, depressed, or having trouble with a partner.
Ask whether something is bothering him and be open to the answer.
Tell him how much his sexual attention matters to you. Then suggest something out of the ordinary – a position, activity, or place you're never tried before. It doesn't have to be something energetic, but a little variety can pull him out of a rut. You may think he has no medical problems, but if his sex life faded suddenly, it may be a sign of illness (hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol), a side effect of medication, or a symptom of alcohol abuse. He could also be suffering from his testosterone. So if his libido remains low, ask him to get a check-up.
