An Aba branch pastor of the Omega Fire Ministry (OFM), Pastor Joseph Aiyedun has been fired by the Founder of the church, Apostle Suleman, for using the church’s name to register and participate in the ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mundial moneybox, MMM.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Administration of the church, Pastor David Apelorioye, the erring pastor was sacked after due investigations revealed that he indeed not only participate in the ponzi scheme but equally used the church’s name to register with the scheme, an act it said has dented the image of the church.
"The management of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide is using this medium to react to a news making the rounds on the social media regarding one of his pastors who used the ministry's name to register for the MMM scheme.
"Ordinarily, the church would not have reacted to the story because of falsehoods being published regularly by some blogs and news websites whose credibility are questionable."
"But after a thorough investigation by the church authority, it was established that one of our branch pastors in Aba, Pastor Joseph Aiyedun, indeed participated in the scheme." "The church authority decided to expel Pastor Aiyedun not because he registered for the ponzi scheme but because he involved the ministry's name in the satanic adventure.”
"And we discovered that he was able to use the ministry's name because he had access to the account of his branch which itself is against the church's guidelines and a fraud likely to have been carried out in connivance with the branch's account department. We are still investigating further to unravel the whole activities."
"Of the OFM's 200 churches in Nigeria alone and its 800 branches in 51 nations of the world, it is possible for any of the pastors to go astray and be corrected. In fact, we discovered that Pastor Aiyedun, including some other members of OFM, did the scheme before our father, Apostle Johnson Suleman made the warning last year against MMM, but Pastor Aiyedun was fired because he did it with the ministry's name as the OFM rules forbid any of its pastors access to the account except people in the account department."
Reports said the erring pastor “would have just been disciplined in line with the church’s rules if he had registered for the scheme in his personal capacity but because he used the ministry's name for the scheme, he was asked to go."
Recall that the Founder of the church, Apostle Johnson Suleman had at a church service in November 2016, warned members of his congregation against involving in MMM, calling it 'demonic'.
UGHELLI- LESS than 24 hours after the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbanjo, visited Delta State, unknown persons set fire on a crude oil pipeline at Ughelli, in the state, sparking fears of attacks by suspected oil rebels.
The pipeline belonging to the Niger Petroleum Development Company, NPDC, located behind the SETRACO construction yard, along the East/West express road, was seen raging with fire at about 4:30p.m, sending huge balls of flame into the atmosphere, which could be seen from different parts of Ughelli metropolis.
Though the flame had subsided at about 7:12p.m, Vanguard could not immediately reach the spot reason, as the terrain could not be easily accessed
As at press time, it was not certain if the cause of the fire was as a result of an attack or environmental impact, as no group has claimed responsibility.
However, confirming the incident, a security source, operating in the area, debunked insinuation that the inferno was as a result of an attack by suspected militants.
He said: "The cause of the incident is as a result of bush burning. Someone set fire on the area and the pipeline, which had some crude oil spill on it and the surrounding environment went up in flames, sending huge balls of flame into the air.".
Speaking further, the source said: "We are ensuring the maximum protection of oil and gas facilities in the area and I can assure you that there would be no form of attacks on oil facilities in the area like time past."
Mr Sabastine Hon (SAN), a constitutional lawyer, has expressed support that Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) should use force in The Gambia political logjam.
ECOWAS and AU plan to force President Yahaya Jammeh of The Gambia out of office and install the President-elect, Adama Barrow.
Hon, who supported the use of force decried the vexed political situation in The Gambia, noting that it had reached a situation that called for urgent action.
He said the use of force became necessary to forestall a large scale humanitarian challenge, regional instability and anarchy.
Hon told newsmen that on no account should the world, ECOWAS and the Afrcian Union stand aloof and watch the ethos of democracy being destroyed by a sit-tight dictator.
He said that the only justification for Jammeh clinging to power after he was defeated in a fair and credible election was his illusion of "non-foreign intervention" and the backing of his zombie military establishment.
"Yet, by section 63(1) of the Constitution of The Gambia, the five-year tenure of office of Jammeh will end on 19th January, 2017.
"This section was inserted by the Jammeh-led government in 2001, but his current actions show clearly that he wants to breach the law he created himself," Hon said.
He said the reported resolve of ECOWAS to use force, if necessary, to topple him and then to install the winner of that election (Barrow) was not only a welcome development but was protected both under the United Nations Charter.
He said it was also protected under existing ECOWAS legislation and under historical and empirical happenings worldwide.
He listed the various pre-United Nations military interventions in sovereign countries to include, "the Russian, British and French Anti-Ottoman military intervention in the Greek War of Independence, 1824.
The Russian unilateral Anti-Ottoman military expedition in Bulgaria, 1877 and U.S military occupation of Haiti in 1915.
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA – The Department of State Service, DSS, on Tuesday, narrated before an Abuja High Court at Maitama, how Justice Adeniyi Ademola who is facing corruption charges, stashed foreign and local currencies inside Ghana-must-go bags at his official residence at the Apo Legislative Quarters Abuja.
Justice Ademola was among seven superior court Judges that were arrested after a sting operation the DSS conducted between October 7 and 8, 2016.
He is answering to a 16-count criminal charge alongside his wife, Olabowale and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Joe Agi.
At the resumed hearing on the matter on Tuesday, coordinator of the DSS sting operation, Mr. Ike Onuoha, who testified as the second prosecution witness, PW-2, told the court that the Judge attempted to deceive operatives that went to search his home by lying that he was out of town.
Led in evidence by government lawyer, Mr. Shegu Jegede, the witness, said the operatives later found the Judge where he hid inside his bedroom.
Onuoha said his team was briefed to search the judge’s residence based on petitions and information alleging that he was in possession incriminating materials.
He told the trial court that when his team arrived at Ademola’s residence with a duly signed search warrant, the security guard told them that only the cook who was simply identified as Ken, had keys into the building.
According to the witness, “Ken eventually came and told us the judge was out of town. We then asked him to call the judge on his phone. We did so because we had reasons to believe that the judge was in fact at home.
"When we entered the premises, we called on Ken to call the judge with his mobile phone. Ken called the judge severally but he refused to pick.
“Much later, the judge sent a text message that he was not in town. After repeated calls, he switched off his phone. At that point, we had no option than to force open the main door.
“When we entered, we saw Justice Ademola in the master’s bedroom upstairs in his night wears. That was few minutes after 12 midnight."
He said following a request by the Judge, waited for the arrival of his lawyer, Mr. Agi, SAN (3rd defendant), who after a brief discussion with Justice Ademola, gave them the nod to search the house.
He said: “As we continued our search on the ground floor, we encountered a locked bedroom. We requested for the keys, but we were not given.
“We then had no option but to force open the door. Inside the bedroom, we saw a locked wardrobe which we also had to force open when the keys were not made available to us.
“Inside the wardrobe, we found a Ghana-must-go bag containing various N1,000 denomination notes to the tune of N39.5million after counting it on the spot.
“We also found two black pump action rifles and 35 live cartridges of ammunition. We also found a silver-coloured flash drive".
The PW-2 further told the court that they found another locked room where they recovered the sum of N8.5m in N1,000 denomination inside a black and white medium sized bag locked up in a wardrobe.
He said thereafter they found "in the master’s bedroom, in an open wardrobe, a black bag where we found the sum of N6m, 121,179 US dollars, 4,400 Euros, 80 pounds, 1,010 Indian Rupees. We also recovered six ATM cards, eight cheque books, eight deposit slips for various banks, two firearm licence – one for Honourable Justice A.R. Muhammed, the other for Honourable Justice Adeniyi Ademola. We also recovered two Apple ipads."
Meantime, under cross-examination, the witness stressed that licenses for such Fmfirearms are renewable, saying the Nigerian Police Force has the responsibility of both issuance and renewal of firearms.
He said his investigation did not extend to interviewing Hon. Justice A.R. Muhammed to ascertain the reason why a gun is licensed in his name and found in the residence of Justice Ademola.
Onuoha said he was not aware that ordering the release of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu from DSS' custody by Justice Ademola, was the major reason that prompted his arrest and trial.
He insisted that the operation was as a result of petitions, intelligence and information gathered by the security agency.
The witness however declined to disclose the source of the said intelligence report, saying “sources of our information are classified.”
Trial Justice Jude Okeke subsequently adjourned the matter till Wednesday at the instance of the prosecution who informed the court that some of the witnesses were being threatened.
The prosecution counsel said the development made it difficult for him to reach most of the proposed witnesses.
Aside bank officials, among those scheduled to mount the witness box include the Secretary of the National Judicial Council, NJC, and the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court were Justice Ademola was serving before his ordeal commenced.
FG alleged that Ademola who is a grandson to a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, had in the discharge of his official duties, received bribe from Agi to the tune of N38.5million and perverted the course of Justice.
Ademola was alleged to have received the bribe money from the SAN through a Guarantee Trust Bank, GTB, account number 201/110160/1/1/0, operated by his wife who was the former Head of Service in Lagos State.
FG said its investigations revealed that the illicit deal occurred between March 11 and 26, 2015, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of the FCT High Court.
The court earlier admitted into evidence, invoice and receipt of a BMW Saloon 320i valued at N8.5 Million, which Agi, SAN, purchased from Coscharis Motors Limited on January 5, 2015 and handed over to Justice Ademola’s son, Ademide.
The NJC had since asked the embattled Judge to step down from the bench pending conclusion of his trial.
The Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) advocacy group on Tuesday in Yola commended the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) for professionalism and sophistication in prosecuting war against terror in the North-East.
The group gave the commendation at a briefing to conclude a day and night rounds of search sorties of the missing Chibok girls to Sambisa.
The Ministers of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, the Chief of Air Staff, AVM Sadique Abubakar and selected journalists from local and foreign media also participated in the exercise.
The group who witnessed first-hand operations of NAF in a Beechcraft surveillance aircraft to Sambisa forest, said the success so far recorded over the insurgents was because the military was well equipped.
"A significant issue is the knowledge of how much of a difference it means for our military to be equipped.
"This position validates our demand that no military dis-empowered can win a war.
"For example, to imagine that the vast land of Sambisa general area, the NAF once upon a time had only two fighter jets reeling out against the enemies, but today it is different.
"It is reassuring that equipping of our military has significant impact beyond the ordinary,'' it said.
It also noted that the BBOG "has been very upset'' and had demanded the prosecution of all those who in any way had been invited for misappropriation of budgetary resources for prosecution of terrorism war.
"Imagine what will have happened if all the resources misappropriated were truly utilised for acquiring the kind of equipment and technology that we saw on board the ISR mission.
"So also are the facilities we have seen here analysing results and giving very informed outcomes for decision making,'' .
The group called on the government to do more in fighting corruption by being more effective in availing the public on status of corruption cases in courts.
"The status of prosecution process should be made known to the public through collaboration between the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Information.
"The citizens are eager to see effective and conclusive prosecution of these corruption cases because that is the only way they will establish system of deterrence in the country.
"People must be made to pay for the consequences of their actions.
"Example of this is the loss of many lives of our soldiers and innocent citizens to terrorists because the budget for the military found a better location in the pockets of some people,'
It underscored the need for government to continue with the negotiations for the release of the remaining 195 Chibok girls in captivity.
"21 of them came on the back of negotiation, four returned on the back of the efforts of the military, through the raids of certain locations.
"If that is the case, it becomes really strategic for the government to make the decision on what next concerning the remaining 195 missing girls through the option that works better,''
The Information Minister, who was also at the briefing, assured the group and Nigerians that negotiation for the release of the girls was ongoing.
Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state on Tuesday, ordered all hospitals and health agency to standby to provide emergency medical response to victims of Rann attack by Nigeria's Air Force jet.
The army's fighter jet had misfired during an operation in Kala Balge, killing civilians and humanitarian aid workers.
However, The Governor's spokesman, Isa Gusau, in an email to journalists in Maiduguri, said that Governor Shettima received the news with very deep concern.
Isah said "Following the unfortunate situation at Rann in Kala-Balge local government area of Borno State, Governor Kashim Shettima has since ordered the State Ministry of Health to set up an emergency with all medical hospitals under the State Government located in Maiduguri. This includes the State Specialist Hospital.
"The governor also ordered that Professor Umaru Shehu Hospital and General Muhammad Shuwa Memorial Hospital, should all be placed on standby in readiness to carry out emergency treatment.
" Governor Shettima received the news with very deep concern while he has channelled his focus on ensuring that all the victims, particularly those with severe injuries are provided urgent medical treatment.
"As at this evening, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent have deployed a helicopter which is on ground at Rann to begin evacuation of victims, starting with those with the most critical health conditions.
"The MSF (Doctors without border) along with officials of the State Government have been first responders.
"Shettima particularly commends the MSF for its rapid response in providing first aide treatment to victims at the scene.
"While Governor Shettima is working to ensure that all victims are evacuated as soon as possible, the State Commissioner of Health has mobilised medical doctors, nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists and other health officials in all hospitals owned by Borno State Government.
Ambulances have also been deployed.
"The medical experts are currently on standby with emergency consumables set for treatment of victims soon as they arrive Maiduguri.
Casualty figures are yet to be ascertained but from information available to the Governor, there are records of deaths with many persons injured.
" The Governor's heart is with families of all those affected and urges citizens to pray for the repose of the souls of those dead and the speedy recovery of the injured.
"Governor Shettima looks forward to formal communication from the military to ascertain what happened and would brief the press should there be the need to do so.
"For now, all focus should be on the evacuation of victims and the provision of emergency medical services to them with the hope that they quickly recover," said Gusau
The Nigerian army, Tuesday, offered some whistle-blowers a whopping sum of N500,000 as reward for providing information about suicide bombers.
The army offered the reward to the whistle-blowers for providing the information that led to the killing of the third suicide bomber in the University of Maiduguri blast that killed a professor of veterinary medicine and four others.

Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Tuesday condemned an accidental air strike by the Nigerian military on an Internally Displaced Peoples’camp (IDPs) cit mistook for Boko Haram, saying it killed 52.
“This large-scale attack on vulnerable people who have already fled from extreme violence is shocking and unacceptable,” said MSF director of operations Jean-Clement Cabrol in a statement.
Six Red Cross workers were killed when a Nigerian air force jet accidentally bombed a camp for people displaced by Boko Haram, the International Committee of the Red Cross said Tuesday.
“We regret that among the casualties of today’s air strikes in Rann, there are six Nigerian RC members killed and 13 wounded,” an ICRC spokeswoman told AFP in a text message.
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sadness and regret over the accidental bombing of a civilian community in Rann, Borno, by the Nigerian Air Force engaged in fighting Boko Haram insurgency in the area.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Tuesday, the president condoled with families of the dead.
The president, who expressed sympathy to the Borno Government, also wished those wounded during the incident divine succour, leading to full recovery.
He pledged the Federal Government’s help for the state government in attending to "this regrettable operational mistake".
Buhari, who pleaded for calm, prayed God to grant repose to the souls of the dead.
The Nigeria Army has said that a fighter jet misfired and shot some humanitarian aid workers of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), recording casualties.
The Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor, said the victims were possibly aid workers and civilians.
Irabor said that the accident happened at Kala Balge Area of Borno.
"So far, it is a little bit disturbing; death has occurred. There are casualties; there are deaths and injuries", Irabor said.
"But on the actual number of casualties, we will get back to you later. I am yet to get the number of casualties of civilians killed, but two soldiers were also affected,'' he added.
The shots reportedly hit the Medicines Sans Frontiers and some civilians.
"This morning, we received a report about the gathering of Boko Haram terrorists around Kala Balge area of Maiduguri.
"I coordinated and I directed that the air component of the operation should go and address the problem.
"Unfortunately, the strike was conducted but it turned out that other civilians were somewhere around the area and they were affected.''
He said some humanitarian staff of Medicines Sans Frontiers and some staff of International Committee of Red Cross(ICRC) were also affected.
"We are sending helicopters to evacuate those that were critically wounded, including our wounded soldiers," Irabor said.
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh on Tuesday declared a state of emergency, citing foreign interference in a presidential election he lost to opponent Adama Barrow last month.
The declaration was necessary “due to the unprecedented and extraordinary amount of foreign inference in the December 1 presidential elections and also in the internal affairs of The Gambia,” Jammeh said on state television.
This had created an “unwarranted hostile atmosphere, threatening the sovereignty, peace, security and stability of the country,” he added.
According to the Gambian constitution, a state of emergency lasts seven days if the president declares it unilaterally but up to 90 days if the national assembly confirms it.
According to Gambian state radio and TV, the state of emergency will be for 90 days.
Also, according to an “Order paper” tagged, “Fourth Assembly”, with sub-title, “First extraordinary session ” and dated 17th January 2017, which was sent to the Senate, the order sought a 90 days stay of a proclamation of a state of emergency in the country effective from 17th January to 17th April, 2017.

Andre Ayew converted a first-half penalty as Ghana started their latest bid to reclaim the Africa Cup of Nations title with a hard-earned 1-0 victory against Uganda on Tuesday.
The West Ham United star’s 32nd-minute spot-kick was all that separated the sides on an awful pitch in Port-Gentil as Ghana withstood Ugandan pressure in the second half and ended their recent poor record against the Cranes.
The Black Stars, who have not won the continental title since 1982 and lost on penalties to the Ivory Coast in the final two years ago, can now look forward with confidence to their next game against Mali.
“In the first half we dominated the game but in the second half we knew the result was the most important thing and we played to win,” said Ghana coach Avram Grant.
“We missed two or three good opportunities but at the end of the day I am happy and I think we will keep improving.”
Uganda will have to wait a little longer for their first goal and points in their first appearance at the Cup of Nations since 1978.
“In 39 years we have not been there and in the first half we had an element of stage fright,” admitted Cranes coach Milutin Sredojevic.
Mali and record seven-time champions Egypt were due to meet later on Tuesday, at 8:00 pm (1900 GMT).
Eight of Ghana’s line-up started the final in Equatorial Guinea in 2015, the only exceptions being Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew and Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey.
Ghana had struggled in recent matches against Sredojevic’s side, failing to win any of three encounters spread over the qualifiers for the 2015 Cup of Nations and the 2018 World Cup.
However, Uganda were without key players in centre-back Murushid Juuko and midfielder Khalid Aucho through suspension, and they spent most of the first half on the back foot.
Twice skipper Asamoah Gyan headed just wide and Christian Atsu fired narrowly over before Andre Ayew steered a low shot towards goal only for Denis Onyango to save.
After knocking on the door in the first half hour, the breakthrough came when Gyan robbed Isaac Isinde inside the area before being held back.
The referee from Botswana pointed to the spot and booked the defender, with Ayew waiting for Onyango to commit before slotting in the penalty.
Atsu, the star of the 2015 tournament, tested Onyango soon after but by that point Ghana had lost left-back Abdul Rahman Baba, stretchered off with what looked like a hamstring injury.
Spurred on by a small but lively band of supporters decked in red, yellow and black, Uganda finished the first half with a flourish and Faruku Miya of Standard Liege should have done better than send in a shot that grazed the post on its way past.
Tonny Mawejje came close and captain Geofrey Massa tried his luck from a 30-yard free-kick that flew inches over Razak Brimah’s bar, as Ghana held on.
Indeed, they might have won by more had Atsu not been denied by Onyango five minutes from the end.
*** Says his visit was meaningless, FG must go for genuine peace in the Niger Delta By Henry Umoru ABUJA- FORMER Minister of State for Education, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi Tuesday took a swipe at Vice President, Yomi Osinbajo, saying that oil and gas will last for another hundred years in the Niger Delta, just as he stressed that persons in government must seek information where they do not have such.
Gbagi who described comments by Vice President Osinbajo as political statement without foundation that in no distant future, the country would be in grave danger if it continues to rely on oil as the product would soon dry up, said that at least 97 percent of the nation’s economy today is rested and shoulder heavy on oil and gas.
Speaking with Journalists yesterday in Abuja, the former Minister who described the Vice President’s visit as fruitless, meaningless, a personal visit which is akin to a visit to the Olu of Warri, His Majesty, Ogiame Ikenwoli, said that the federal government took the people of Urhobo for granted for not visiting the area which is the hob of gas production, adding that it was against the grain of reason for the Vice-President to visit other ethnic strongholds without stopping over at Ughelli, the political headquarters of the Urhobo nation.
Gbagi said that the visit was not beneficial to the people because no political statement was made that was geared towards having lasting peace in the zone.
According to him, the government’s refusal to visit Ughelli in Urhobo land, was a replay of what happened in 1971 when the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon had scheduled a visit to the Midwest which is now part of Delta State, but the secretary, an Itsekiri did not allow the former head of state to visit Urhobo land.
Gbagi said, “While we are looking for peace, the sensibility of Urhobo people should not be taken for granted, the Urhobo people have been taken for granted for too long in the scheme of things.
“A similar situation happened in 1971 when Gowon was to visit Midwest which is now Delta, the Secretary then was an Iteskiri man and they crafted a similar visit to exclude the Urhobo nation, it is on record that Urhobos hold the bedrock of gas company, Otorobo that is the major source of electricity in Nigeria today talk less of all the oil wells, pipelines across the entire Urhobo nation. Urhobos being the 4th largest nationality in Nigeria have been for sometimes now neglected and relegated to the background because of their peaceful nature.
“While it appears that trouble makers, violent and gun tooting get greater reward in Nigeria, the school of violence, agitations does not belong to any ethnic group. I see the visit of the Vice President as irresponsibly put together as it is not in the interest of the much desired peace, I congratulate the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom and all those who walked out from that gathering of shame.
“Iam reliably informed that the Programme which originally was to see the Vice President’s visit to Gbaramatu, the Olu of Warri and the visit to Ughelli where the oldest traditional ruler, the Owhorode of Olomu who is 100 years resides to host all the traditional rulers in conjunction with a meeting with the Vice Presidenr was truncated by the governor of the State and the deputy. We should root foe genuine peace to support the good initiative of Mr. president and stop playing lip service or waste the economic base of Nigeria.
“Quoting the Vice President, at least 97% of the economy today is rested and shoulder heavy on oil and gas, his claim that oil will soon finish or dry up is a political statement without foundation, the gas situated on Otolobo at least will last for another 100 years, tax payers earners like the Vice President and persons in government must seek information where they don’t have them and still heating the polity. I will grant a statement on the second year of the administration in Delta as I have done in all previous governments. Urhobos will make our position known to the government at the Centre. The visit of the Vice President is meaningless, made no statement, it is akin to a personal visit to the Olu of Warri as there is no policy statement from the government addressing the issues at hand.”
THE National Committee of Yoruba Youth, NCYY, has called on Nigerians to support the efforts of the Nigerian Army in its drive at eradicating the menace of insurgents in the North East part of the country rather than castigating it.
Addressing newsmen in Lagos, yesterday, the youth group commended the effort of the military in invading the dreaded Sambia forest, which was the stronghold of Boko Haram terrorists.
National President of NCYY, Comrade Odeyemi Oladimeji, while faulting a petition written to the Minister of Information and Communications, Alhaji Lai Mohammed over alleged campaign of calumny against the Army by some online media, said the move was done in bad faith.
Oladimeji said the military under the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai have become “the target of a well-funded, coordinated and orchestrated campaign of calumny by political detractors, and some media”.
He said rather than embark on a campaign to portary the Army in bad light, the youth president said the Nigerian Army deserves a pat on the back.
Oladimeji said: “The insurgents have been dislodged. They are now desperate and that is why we are having these attacks hence Nigerians should cooperate with the military. This time calls for eternal vigilance. We should report any suspicious movement around us”, he said.
He said recent reports and allegations against the Army and the Chief of Army Staff in some online media were “either concocted, unsubstantiated, pure conjectures or outright falsehood.”
In addition, he said: “Indeed, what the Nigerian Army and its leadership deserve are accolades and not mudslinging and wicked propaganda by detractors, who now see the Nigerian Army as their next target for reasons that are far from being noble."
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Tuesday reassured that the negotiations for the release of other Chibok girls in captivity were on-going.
The minister disclosed this at the Air Force Base in Yola in a briefing to conclude a day and night rounds of search sortie of the missing girls to Sambisa.
Mohammed; the Minister of Defence, Brig-Gen. Mansur Dan-Alli (rtd); the convener of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group, Mrs Obiageli Ezekwesili; as well as selected local and foreign journalists participated in the search mission.
Mohammed said that the success recorded by the military in the theatre of war was helping the negotiation because of the carrot and stick approach of government to ending insurgency.
He recalled that a meeting was recently held which was a near success and added that the government would not rest on its oars in ensuring a safe return of all the missing girls and others in captivity.
"The negotiations are still on, but unfortunately unlike the search operations, we cannot take you along to the negotiation table.
"I want to assure you that these negotiations are going on but they are very complicated and delicate and shift from time to time,'' he said.
The minister commended the military for the victories recorded in various operations at decimating the insurgents particularly in Sambisa.
He noted that the capture of Camp Zairo in Sambisa, which is the headquarters and stronghold of the insurgent was very crucial to defeating the terrorists.
The minister stressed that the proportion of the camp to the size of the forest notwithstanding, "the capture is a big victory for the military
"Camp Zairo might occupy probably one kilometre out of 60,000 kilometres expanse of Sambisa, but it is so crucial to us in this war.
"It is like imagining that there is a war and the Villa is captured. That is the essence of camp zairo.
"It is not the extent of physical expanse but that we struck at the very heart of insurgency and it does not mean the end of the campaign in Sambisa forest,'' he said.
Mohammed commended the Air Force for their professionalism and for deployment of modern technology in their operations.
The minister also commended the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar for initiating the search mission.
He added that it served its objective of participating and better understanding of the efforts of the military in fighting insurgency.
Speaking on casualty figure of his men, Abubakar said they were very lucky in terms of suffering casualties on their air operations.
"First and foremost, the enemy does not have air assets and we take training very seriously.
"We do everything possible to ensure capacity development of our pilots and we make judicious use of the personnel that are on ground,'' he said.
He thanked the minister, the BBOG delegation, the journalists and others that participated in the exercise.
The Nigerian Army will conduct "Exercise Harbin Kunama II'' in Southern Kaduna State in April as part of efforts to address the current security challenges in the area.
Maj.-Gen. David Ahmadu, the Chief of Training and Operations of the Army, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja at a news conference while reviewing the exercises conducted by the army in 2016.
Ahmadu also said that the Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship (NASAC) would take place in the Sambisa forest in March, the first in seven years.
"The NASAC will also be accompanied by concentration of fires from direct and indirect weapon systems of the Nigerian Army.
"In addition, the Roland Missile Weapon System in the Nigerian Army inventory will also be test-fired during the NASAC,'' he said.
On Harbin Kunama II, Ahmadu explained that the exercise would cover Birnin Gwari, Kyambane forest in Kaduna State and "contiguous areas in Plateau, Lame Burra forest in Bauchi State and Falgore forest in Kano State''.
He said both NASAC and Harbin Kunama would entail massive movement of personnel and military hardware.
The chief of training and operations, therefore, urged the public not to panic as their safety would be guaranteed.
Responding to questions, Ahmadu said, that the army did not immediately respond to crisis in Southern Kaduna was not a failure on its part.
He explained that it was the responsibility of the police to deal with internal crisis.
According to him, the army comes in to deal with internal crisis after due process when it is certain that the crisis is beyond the police.
Ahmadu also allayed fears and doubt that the NASAC would hold in the Sambisa forest in spite of pockets of suicide bombings and other attacks being witnessed in the North-East.
He recalled that in 2016, "hybrid Command Post Exercises and Field Training Exercise'' nicknamed "Shirin Harbi'' were conducted at Alkaleri forest in Bauchi state.
Others, he said were Exercise Harbin Kunama I held at Dansadau forest in Zamfara, Crocodile Smile in South-South and Python Dance in South-East.
"The objectives of these exercises were to sharpen the skills of troops with respect to specific environments and to rid the geo-political zones of prevailing security challenges at the time such as armed robbery, armed banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling, illegal oil bunkering and oil theft, amongst others,'' he said.
According to Ahmadu, the exercises were assessed as hugely successful.
He called on the general public to remain on high alert and be security conscious.
Ahmadu said this was necessary as insurgents fleeing from military operations in the North-East had started "infiltrating to hibernate in the midst of innocent communities''.
Morocco has offered The Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh asylum in return for accepting election defeat and stepping down, a local news website reported Tuesday.
The small west African country has been plunged into political turmoil since Jammeh disputed president-elect Adama Barrow’s December election victory and refused to cede power.
Deputy Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and the North African kingdom’s foreign intelligence chief Yassine Mansouri have been conducting “a delicate mission in Banjul”, the Gambian capital, for several days, Le Desk website reported.
Morocco wants Jammeh “to accept his election defeat in return for a golden retirement in Morocco”, the website said.
The initiative comes after an international outcry over Jammeh’s refusal to step down.
Even the prospect of military intervention in The Gambia has been floated in recent days, following declarations by the United Nations and African Union that boots on the ground could get the green light without a rapid resolution of the crisis.
The Moroccan foreign ministry did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment on the authenticity of the report.
The report came ahead of an African Union summit in Addis Ababa at the end of January, which will see Morocco return to the regional bloc decades after pulling out in 1984.
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI visited The Gambia in 2006, and the two nations have long held strong ties.
A spokesman for The Gambia’s opposition leader Barrow, who is currently in Senegal, has vowed that the president-elect’s inauguration will go ahead as planned on January 19.
President-elect Donald Trump takes office this week with dismal approval and popularity numbers, according to polls out Tuesday, underscoring the deep divisions among Americans as the New York businessman prepares for his inauguration.
A CNN/ORC poll showed 40 percent of respondents approved of the way Trump has been handling the transition period heading into Friday’s inauguration, a figure that’s sharply lower than any incoming US president in recent history.
Trump will enter the Oval Office as the least popular incoming president in at least four decades, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The president-elect immediately slammed the findings, pointing out that a majority of surveys ahead of his November 8 electoral win predicted victory for his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.
“The same people who did the phony election polls, and were so wrong, are now doing approval rating polls. They are rigged just like before,” he said on Twitter.
The real estate developer who is working in government for the first time has presided over a chaotic and unorthodox transition period since his election.
The recent weeks have featured — among other things — a drawn-out search for top cabinet members, questions over conflicts of interest, feuds with the media, unsubstantiated allegations that Russia holds compromising material against Trump, and the president-elect’s Twitter blasts against critics ranging from the CIA chief to the screen legend Meryl Streep.
The CNN poll showed Trump lagging more than 20 points behind the approval ratings of his three most recent predecessors and 44 points below that of President Barack Obama as he prepared to enter the Oval Office in 2009.
Obama had an 84 percent approval rating ahead of his inauguration, Bill Clinton scored 67 percent approval in late December 1992 and 61 percent approved of George W. Bush’s transition in poll figures from January 2001, CNN said.
Forty percent of respondents told the Washington Post-ABC survey they have a favorable impression of the incoming president, compared with 54 percent who said they have an unfavorable impression.
That makes Trump the most unpopular incoming president since at least Jimmy Carter in 1977, the Washington Post said.
Forty-four percent said Trump is qualified to serve as president, as opposed to 52 percent who said he’s not qualified, the Washington Post-ABC poll said.
When asked how much confidence they have that Trump will make the right decisions for the country’s future, 38 percent said they had a great deal or a good amount of confidence. Sixty-one percent said they had just some or no confidence.
The CNN/ORC poll has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. The Washington Post-ABC poll has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
