E-commerce provides solution to economic problems – Okolonkwo
4:11:11 PMOkogba

By Ephraim Oseji & Anino Aganbi

Government alone cannot solve the problems affecting Nigeria economically. This was said by Gilead Okolonkwo, MD, CEO of Beepmagnate International, during the launch of the firm in Lagos.

According to him, that is why the private sector should join government to solve the economic problems confronting the nation. He explained that his company wants to do its bit to partner government.

Okolonkwo said: "Part of our drive is when you look at young graduates who have gone through the four walls of the university and, when they are out, there is no job. It has been my desire that even though government is trying it alone cannot solve the problems affecting us in Nigeria economically. So the role of Beepmagnate International through our products and services is to support the government. When the government says there are no jobs, we say there are jobs and that is why our digital product is on e-commerce.  We have carefully crafted out the Gold-club solution to advance our concept of e-commerce. Gold Club is a non-profit organization. Gold Club has looked at using technology, connected to our discount service and, because it is a life style, it is something that everyone is willing to embrace.  As an organization, we are going to negotiate traffic for discount. Every organization is interested in increasing its sales and all we ask is if they are willing to offer discounts to our community".

Okolonkwo further stated, "Beepmagnate is the first of its kind in Nigeria. When we talk about offline payment technology, we want to look at the books. While the banks are still talking about internet for transactions, we are saying you can do transactions without the internet. While people are still talking about PMD cards, we are talking about wristbands. We have a wristband which is part of our payment system. We are not relenting because we are thinking deep into the future. Our innovation in the real estate is that we want everybody to be connected to our crypto currency which is the bmcoin, whereby when you access a package of the coin, in no time, you should be able to gain access to owning your own property".

Okowa flags off intelligence gathering Unit in Delta
3:51:11 PMOkogba

By Yinka Ajayi

In a bid to resolve communal differences in Delta State, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has flagged off Intelligence Gathering and Community Development department in the governors office Warri Delta State.

Gov Ifeanyi Okowa

In a courtesy visit to the head of the Unit by some community Elders in warri, Senior Special Assistance on Intelligent gathering, Mr. Smart Olorunyomi Asekutu urged community leaders and people in the state to take advantage of the office in seeking solution to their grievances.

"Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa means well for people, communities and establishments across Delta state, that is why he established the office which will serve as a platform for genuine complaints, claims and other issues begging for attention and for prompt action. With this development, harassment of oil company workers and contractors will soon be a thing of the past as the office will serve as an avenue for every aggrieved person to air their grievances instead of taking laws into their hands. Youths should partner with elders of their community on security matters, and collectively see the office as a gateway for expressing grievances." Asekutu said.

He called on traditional institutions to utilise the office in passing useful intelligence on illegal activities in their areas that can disrupt cordial relationship between host communities and business operations, especially oil and gas, in the state as it is very important to nip such likely hostilities in the bud before they escalate, as a peaceful community is necessary for development.

Responding, some of the community leaders expressed their appreciation for Governor Okowa for creating the office and assured Mr. Asekutu of their cooperation.

3:30:14 PMadekunle

Akure – The Technical Adviser, Sunshine Stars FC Austin Eguavoen, says his team is close to full readiness for the second stanza of the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Eguavoen

Eguavoen made the assertion while speaking with newsmen on Saturday after observing the team's morning training at the Ondo State Sports Completex, Akure.

He said that little details in areas of players' registration and welfare were all that were needed to be addressed for the team to be fully ready for the final half of the season.

"On a scale of 100, we are 85 per cent ready for the Second Stanza. If we finalise players' registration and address the welfare issue speedily, yes, we will be 100 per cent ready.

"And there are positive signals from the authorities in the area of welfare,'' he said.

The former Super Eagles player and coach also maintained that the team's focus at the moment was next weekend's game against Lobi Stars of Makurdi as they planned to take it one game after the other.

Sunshine Stars, which play host to Lobi Stars in their first game of the second stanza are already out of relegation zone in the current campaign.

They are 15th in the NPFL log after 19 rounds of matches in the First Stanza.

With Chelsea already crowned champions, the race for who qualifies for next season’s Champions league will go down to the wire as just three points separates Manchester City (3rd with 72 points), Liverpool (4th with 70 points) and Arsenal (5th with 69) with just two games left.

Tottenham (2nd with 77 points) is guaranteed of not finishing lower than 3rd, that is in the event they lose their last two games.

Dutsinma University council insist on investigation of suspended VC
2:49:44 PMadekunle

Ben Agande
Kaduna – A meeting convened by the National University Commission at the instance of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to discontinue the investigation of corruption against the suspended Vice Chancellor of University, Professor Haruna Kaita ended in a deadlock as the Board insisted that the investigation must continue in the interest of justice.

Malam Adamu Adamu

A source at the meeting which held on Wednesday in Abuja told Vanguard that despite the persuasion by the National University commission that the investigation should be discontinued and the suspended Vice Chancellor be allowed to come back to his position but the board of the university insisted that doing so would send a wrong signal.

It would be recalled that the Board of the new university suspended the vice chancellor for six weeks to allow for investigations of several petitions against him bordering on corruption and abuse of office.

The insistence by the chairman of the council to go ahead with the investigation prompted a lot of pressure from political and religious figures who insisted that the suspended vice chancellor be recalled.

Because of the pressure, the chairperson of the council, Dr Marliya Zayyana threatened to resign her position forcing the Minister of Education to convened the peace meeting.

Vanguard gathered that at the meeting which was presided over by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, the Board chairperson of the university advanced three points which according to her, would make the lifting of the six weeks suspension impossible.

A member of the board who was at the meeting said the argument of the board was that since a committee has been empanelled to investigate the allegations against the vice Chancellor, the investigation should be concluded.

The source who did not want his name mentioned because he is not authorised to speak on the matter said: “the position of the Council was that, it would be setting a very bad precedent if it reverses itself and truncate the work of the panel before it even start. We felt that the panel should be allowed to work and the allegations are not established, it would be more honourable.

” Secondly the board felt that we would be setting a bad percent if we allow undue interference by external forces in the discharge of our duties. As members of the board, we felt that we owe the university community a duty to ensure that standards are set and maintained. No responsible boars will be happy that a university that one year ago ranked 14 in ranking suddenly dropped to 34. We felt something must be wrong. We made our representation and thankfully, it made sense” he said.

Meanwhile, the Interim Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the Federal University Dutsinma, Dr Samuel Zumve has insisted that whether he is cleared or not, the suspended Vice Chancellor of the university no longer enjoy the support of the university community to continue in his position.

In an interview with Sunday Vanguard in Dutsinma, Dr Zumve said the best option for the federal government was to appoint a new vice Chancellor for the university.

Among you here today are people of diverse professions, religions and ethnic backgrounds. We are all united by the great citizenship that residing in Lagos State confers.

"I thank you for shouldering the responsibilities of the good citizen of Lagos State. The citizen who is registered as a resident, pays taxes, obeys our laws, supports our policies, protects our projects and comes to the rescue of his neighbour in danger," Governor Ambode said.

Only Buhari can say what exactly is wrong with him – Femi Adesina
2:07:04 PMadekunle

Mr Femi Adesina has aid that only President Muhammadu Buhari can say what exactly is wrong with him.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Aisha Buhari and grand daughter

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari speaking with Tribune on the possibility that Nigerians will be informed on the health status of President Buhari said, "It is only the president himself that can declare that. And when he came back from London on March 10, he said it that he had never been that sick in his life. That is a declaration of his health status.

"It is within his prerogative to do that. Nobody can do it for him. Not even the doctors treating him can do it for him. Under the Hippocratic Oath, nobody can do it except the patient.

"Nobody; under the Hippocratic Oath, it says that even the doctor has no right to reveal the health status of his patient to anybody. So, it's only Mr President that can say what exactly is wrong with him.

"Don't forget that in June last year, he went abroad to treat an ear problem. That ear problem had first been treated here in Nigeria and then, when he was going on vacation, he used that opportunity to also consult specialists in London.

"When he came back, he told the country that this was what was wrong with him. So, the prerogative is his own to disclose and if he wants to disclose, he will. But nobody should be asking him to do it. That would be an infringement on his right."

"If anybody has put himself in suspense, he's just doing it for himself because it's not necessary. The law does not compel a president to reveal what is wrong with him. It does not."

On when will the freed Chibok girls go home Adesina said That question is not due yet.

It's not time for that question. Yes, no doubt they will go home because nobody can keep them forever. But now that they have just come, it is the responsibility of government to ensure that that are rehabilitated-spiritual rehabilitation, physical, mental, sociological, medical, all kinds rehabilitation.

They need to be prepared for life in society again, having been in captivity for over three years. If government does not do it, the same people who are agitating that they should go home, will turn round and blame government of being reneged in its responsibility.

So, government is doing what it should do for its citizens by ensuring that those girls are kept together in a safe location and given wholistic rehabilitation

The president, while he was receiving them on Sunday, said going back to school is a priority, that they must finish their education.

So, they must be assisted to return to school. Before returning to the larger society, there are other kinds of rehabilitation that should be done. And it is after all that is done that the question you have asked will become due for asking. But it does not mean that their parents will not see them in all that time.

No. Parents and families will see them; in fact, those that returned last October, remember they spent Christmas with their families.

So, that is the situation. Their people will have access to them, but government also will fulfill its obligations and responsibilities to them for some time to come before they are released to go back to the society.

France legislature and Macron's "Republique en Marche" dictates
1:51:33 PMadekunle

"REPUBLIQUE EN MARCHE" DICTATES

After winning the French presidential election with over 60% of the expressed votes cast in his favour, Emmanuel Macron is also transforming from mere "En Marche" to "République en Marche" in order to curry the favour of those who believe that what brought their Vth Republic to life when General Charles de Gaulle proclaimed, as the Algeria – Franco war raged on between 1956 – 58, "L'Afrique aux Africanis" – leave Africa for Africans. He felt it was high time France acknowledged the right for any given people to decide for themselves how they wanted to be governed.

Emmanuel Macron

It did not go well for most of his compatriots; especially as there were millions of French people living in Algeria who could not fathom a better life elsewhere than in Algeria; they were known then as "les pieds noirs" that is, white people with black legs, as the reverse then was also "les Nègres Français" – Negros transformed to French people. It was a time when people like Senghor, Boigny Cesar were Africans heading Ministries in France; not exactly like the recent one promoted by Sarkozy to assuage the minorities in France; having Blacks and Arabs as ministers manning strategic ministries.

As it didn't work, Hollande changed direction; and for Macron who served under him as both economic adviser and Budget Minister, it was not enough approach to get the Republic on the right move; hence his "En Marche and now "République En Marche"…

Like the prognostics before the election, that his chances were getting narrowed down which did not happen, his penchant to give human rights' activists more than half of the electoral constituents, "En Marche" is presenting candidates to be its torch bearers as defending "République En Marche", people are also thinking that his chances to secure the majority seats of 288 out of the 577 contested for is in jeopardy.

How could people be worried for a presidential candidate who inaugurated his party, "En Marche" in 6th April 2016, resigned from Hollande's government on 30th August 2016, declared his ambition on 16th November, 2016 and forged alliance with his greatest fear in torpedoing his ambition in the person of Sarkozy's Prime Minister, Bayrou and went ahead to win in May 2017.

Indeed, it seems not to be as former Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, who had declared intention to support Macron's government and to run under Socialist ticket at the same time has given a room for reviewing Macron's strategy. As socialist' party opposes Valls' move, it has been settled that no candidate of Macron's party should stand against him in that constituency; hence a subtle entente with anyone in any party to relate clandestinely with Macron's "République En Marche" to get such support.

So, it is expected that all the parties could have some of their candidates toeing the same line. However, "Parti des Républicains" of Fillon, the one who defeated Sarkozy in the primaries, seems to be the party that will cast the dice if not well carried along. And Marcon knows that very well hence his, now, ethos of "République En Marche". If indeed you believe in the Republican ethos of France, symbolized in "Liberté, Egalité et Fraternite", and echoed in the national anthem: "la Marseillaise", you need no prompting to answer the call of the "Flag" as it is rendered in "la Marsaillaise",

Before Macron entered into the presidential race, it was reported that his wife, 24 years older than him and his mentor, had prepared the ground with extensive  meetings, lunch times and dinner parties with those whom she identified as going to be the "game players". Such instances are not lacking in the forthcoming legislative elections. And, what is more, the greater asset of Marine Le Pen, her niece, Marion Marechal–Le Pen, had left the extreme right party viewing it as very rigid for her likeness.

So, the legislative election to come could also be a proof of what General de Gaulle clamoured for, when he was snubbed only to be recalled with a very great majority to lead France into its current Vth Republic. It is clear that parties' faithful are going to decamp like Macron himself decamped from Socialist party. And in that decampment, new faithful to the "République en Marche" are going to surface.

Toubiret, former Attorney General, a black lady, is leading a new group for seemingly decamping purposes; Allain Juppé is also expected to rattle his centre right party just as other great "Enarquists" – the Alumni group of Ecole Normal d'Administration (ENA) – are preparing to extend a hand of fellowship to Macron. In effect, when Macron was in an obscure banking job, they were the ones who nominated him to serve in François Hollande's government as an attempt to infuse youthful perspective to the Socialist party economic agenda. They are not going to let him down.

At worst, as already expressed, he will be a president ordering the Republican party to constitute a government for "République En Marche presidency; that is what French people call co-habitation. François Mitterrand co-habitated with "Republicans as well for the 14 years he remained the President of France with great harmony. Note that even his successor, a Gaullist, Jacques Chirac was once his Prime Minister.

All said and done, it is expected that with Macron's intelligence and Brigitte's relentless effort for bringing together the right game players, "République En Marche" will secure the majority to have the right Prime Minister intended by Emmanuel Macron and his mentor Brigitte; if not even his campaign manager, the child of Brigitte, an age mate of Macron, from her first husband. As French people will say, "L'étendard est levé", defend the Nation; the flag is up, calling you to obey National call.

VICTOR C. ARIOLE, PhD Professor of French and Francophone Studies University of Lagos.

NCC cautions public on fake contracts award
1:47:30 PMOkogba

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has cautioned members of the public against letters of contracts purportedly awarded by the commission in circulation, saying they are fake.

The commission said in a statement on Saturday in Lagos, that its attention had been drawn to the circulation of letters of award of various contracts purportedly written by its Secretary.

"The commission wishes to categorically state that these letters were not issued by the commission.

"When contracts are to be awarded by the commission, adverts are published in various newspapers, the Federal Tenders Journal and our websites.

"The procurement process adopted by the Commission is always transparent and can be duly verified.

"The general public and corporate organisations are advised not to transact business with the unscrupulous persons issuing these fake letters,'' it said.

The telecommunications regulator urge members of the public to ensure that thorough diligence was conducted in all cases to avoid falling victim to the peddlers of the fake letters of award.

It said that offers of the fake letters of award should be reported to the commission or the law enforcement agencies.

"Any person who deals with such peddlers of fake letters does so at his/her own risk," the commission said.

How Southampton sinked Boro to end barren run
1:41:42 PMadekunle

Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond scored as Southampton defeated relegated Middlesbrough 2-1 on Saturday to snap a run of five Premier League matches without a win.

One-time England international Rodriguez notched his fourth goal of the season to give the Saints the lead at the Riverside Stadium on 42 minutes.

Nathan Redmond came on at half-time and struck a second for Southampton before Shane Long fired over from the spot after winning the visitors a penalty.

Patrick Bamford pulled one back for Boro with his first goal in over two years, but Claude Puel’s side held on to climb up one spot to ninth.

Frenchman Puel handed a debut to former Barcelona and Juventus defender Martin Caceres, while Jeremy Pied made his first start after recovering from a long-term knee injury.

England manager Gareth Southgate was in the crowd as he returned to his former club ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland, perhaps casting an eye over Boro centre-back Ben Gibson.

Bamford, who rejoined Boro on a permanent deal from Chelsea in January, tested Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster with a hopeful drive on 25 minutes as the game was slow to spark into life.

George Friend then nodded wide from a corner, but Southampton forged ahead just before the break when Long skipped down the right and cut the ball back for Rodriguez to turn beyond Brad Guzan.

Slack Boro defending allowed Redmond, another player hoping to impress Southgate, to compound their problems on 57 minutes as the substitute was afforded far too much space to curl superbly into the top corner.

Irishman Long was sent sprawling by Guzan soon after, but the striker blazed his penalty over via the top of the crossbar.

Bamford handed Boro a lifeline when he headed in a Viktor Fischer corner with 18 minutes to play, but Forster produced a fine save in the dying stages to deny Calum Chambers an equaliser.

Weigl joins Germany injury list for Confed Cup
1:36:50 PMadekunle

Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl added to the growing list of injured Germany players ruled out of next month’s Confederations Cup after fracturing his right ankle on Saturday.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder was stretchered off after 22 minutes of Dortmund’s 1-1 draw at Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

julian weigl

German media reports expect him to be out for the next three to four months.

He will miss Dortmund’s German Cup final in Berlin on May 27 against Eintracht Frankfurt, plus the Confederations Cup with world champions Germany in Russia from June 17-July 2.

Weigl joins Mario Goetze, Manuel Neuer and Benedikt Hoewedes, all sidelined by injury or illness, on Germany’s list of absentees.

Weigl’s Dortmund team-mate, winger Marco Reus, could also skip the tournament after several injuries this season.

Germany head coach Joachim Loew is set to name his squad for the competition on Wednesday.

Loew has said he will blood young talent and leave a host of first-choice players at home to rest before the 2018 World Cup.

Arjen Robben hits Bayern winner in nine-goal thriller
1:31:10 PMadekunle

Arjen Robben’s superb solo goal five minutes into time added on sealed a dramatic 5-4 comeback win for Bayern Munich at RB Leipzig in an electric top-of-the-table clash on Saturday.

Robben

Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded Bayern, who were already confirmed as Bundesliga champions for the fifth straight year, were 4-3 down on 90 minutes until David Alaba drilled home a free-kick a minute later.

Robben, 33, then proved he had the legs to sprint clear of the tiring home defence as he capped a superb run with the winner.

“It was a crazy game,” said Ancelotti.

“We had a difficult start, but at the end it was enough for this crazy result.

“Both teams played great football, but could have defended better.”

It was heartbreak for second-placed Leipzig, who were minutes from avenging their 3-0 defeat at Bayern’s Allianz Arena last December.

“Congratulations Bayern for this mad victory and congrats to those who were in the stadium to witness it,” said Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhuettl.

“We didn’t win any points today, but won a few hearts and some sympathy.

“We looked like being the winners for a long time against the best team in Germany.”

Bayern’s last-gasp victory leaves them 13-points clear in the table and captain Philipp Lahm will lift the Bundesliga trophy after next Saturday’s home match against Freiburg.

Leipzig’s Timo Werner netted twice and with 21 league goals is the Bundesliga’s leading German striker, and a shoe-in when Germany’s squad for next month’s Confederations Cup is announced on Wednesday.

In the race to be the league’s top-scorer, Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski also scored twice to leave him on 30 goals, one more than nearest rival, Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with a game left.

The first goal came after just 65 seconds when Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer headed home, then Werner hit the post on 12 minutes.

Bayern drew level when a Lahm cross clipped the arm of defender Bernardo and Lewandowski drilled home the penalty on 16 minutes.

Leipzig restored their lead when Xabi Alonso fouled playmaker Emil Forsberg and Werner netted from the spot.

Danish striker Yussuf Poulsen made it 3-1 to Leipzig just after the break when his shot wrong-footed Bayern’s third-choice goalkeeper Tom Starke after clipping Alonso’s boot.

– Dramatic finale –

But Bayern stayed in touch as Thiago Alcantara headed home Alonso’s cross on 60 minutes, before Werner grabbed his second five minutes later after turning Germany defender Jerome Boateng.

When Robben hit the crossbar with a free-kick on 84 minutes, Lewandowski reacted fastest to head home the rebound, cutting their deficit to one goal again and setting the scene for the dramatic finale.

Questions will be asked of Bayern’s defence, which shipped four goals for the first time since losing 4-1 at Wolfsburg in January 2015.

With Bayern and Leipzig already assured direct Champions League places, the battle rages on for the third automatic place after third-placed Dortmund drew 1-1 at Augsburg.

Aubameyang’s equaliser cancelled out Alfred Finnbogason’s early strike for Augsburg.

The result leaves Dortmund level on 61 points with fourth-placed Hoffenheim, who romped to a 5-3 victory at Werder Bremen as ex-Leicester City striker Andrej Kramaric netted twice.

Hertha Berlin and sixth-placed Freiburg, who drew 1-1 at home to Ingolstadt, are in pole position to qualify for the Europa League next season.

Hertha are fifth after 19-year-old defender Jordan Torunarigha scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win at already relegated Darmstadt, with Salomon Kalou netting the opener.

Ingolstadt, 17th in the table, had their relegation confirmed after Hamburg’s 1-1 draw at home to Schalke left them four points adrift with one game left.

The LMC in a separate letter to goalkeeper Emmanuel Fabiyi of Gombe United sympathised with him for the assault by the club supporters but also warned him against making comments in the media that portray the league in bad light and reminded him of the rules guiding public utterances of players and officials

In a summary jurisdiction notice issued the club late Friday, Gombe United were cited for breach of Rules B.13.18, C9 and C1.

Supporters of the club were adjudged to have thrown objects towards the field of play including stones hurled at a player of Rangers international during the match and which amounted to a breach of Rule B13.18 punishable under Rule B15.16.

Gombe United supporters were also cited for encroachment on the technical area and on the field of play at the end of the match which also was in breach of Rule B13.18 and punishable under Rule B15.16.

The third charge against the club was for failure to ensure the proper conduct of club officials, particularly those who occupied the technical bench in breach of Rule C9.

Lastly, Gombe United was found to have been in breach of Rule C1, punishable under Rule B15.16 in that some of the club's supporters assaulted their goalkeeper thereby failing to show sportsmanship and or acting in a manner capable of bringing the League to disrepute.

For these breaches, the LMC exercised its summary jurisdiction and imposed a fine totaling N3.25M including a two home match stadium closure to supporters, funding the medical expenses of the goalkeeper, Emmanuel Fabiyi and also ensuring that the supporters who assaulted the goalkeeper are apprehended and handed over to the Police for prosecution.

Hunger and fear in Syria's Tabqa after IS defeat
1:02:06 PMOkogba

When Dalal Ahmad heard that the fighters who expelled the Islamic State group from the Syrian town of Tabqa were distributing food, she began to run, desperate for any scraps.

After more than a month of heavy fighting, and a siege that left the city in Raqa province cut off from supplies, Ahmad and others like her in Tabqa are hungry, exhausted and afraid.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, seized the town of Tabqa and the nearby dam on Wednesday after fierce fighting.

The city has been ravaged by the clashes, and trash and dead bodies were visible on the streets 48 hours after the SDF announced Tabqa’s capture.

So when one of her neighbours told Ahmad that the SDF was distributing food in Tabqa’s central market, she rushed over as fast as she could.

But on her arrival, she found the “distribution” was nothing more than a few SDF fighters sharing their meals with local residents.

“We’re so fed up and disgusted with ourselves,” she told AFP, her disappointment clear in her voice.

“There’s no water to wash or to clean with. Everything has been cut off: water, electricity, food,” she said.

“We want humanitarian groups to help us out before we die of hunger and disease.”

Nearby, a woman combed through the remains of an SDF meal, gathering discarded sandwiches and placing them in a box.

“The situation in the town is very difficult, particularly because of the major food shortage caused by the fighting and the severing of supply routes after the town was surrounded by the SDF,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor.

– ‘Flies and dirt’ –
On another street, residents waited to fill bottles at a water tank, their supply cut by the fighting for the nearby Tabqa dam.

Around them was evidence of the fight for the town, including damaged buildings and the body of a suspected IS fighter lying in the street.

Uncollected rubbish sat in small piles along the road, attracting clouds of flies.

In the market, shopkeepers worked to clean the street in front of their businesses.

“There is a lot of illness spreading because of the bodies that are still scattered about, which are starting to smell,” said 40-year-old Abdel Rahman Shakrushi.

“There are flies and dirt everywhere, which is affecting our health.”

Abdel Rahman said hundreds of people were still missing in the town, with the bodies of many people killed in air strikes still believed to be under rubble.

IS jihadists seized Tabqa in 2014, and the town was a key prize for the SDF as they press an operation to recapture the extremist group’s Syrian bastion of Raqa, 55 kilometres (35 miles) to the east.

The SDF operation was backed by heavy air strikes from the US-led coalition, and civilians trapped in the fighting were terrified.

Some were able to escape, and made their way towards the SDF fighters, but others like 20-year-old Muhannad Haj Omar moved around the town looking for safety.

“We were going from place to place, from house to house. We didn’t even know where we were any more,” he said.

– ‘They destroyed our lives’ –
Even with IS expelled, and facing a final assault on their stronghold, fear of the group remains strong in Tabqa.

Ahmad was still wearing the all-enveloping black robes and face veil that IS required of all women living under its rule.

“We’re still afraid that they could come back and attack the city. We’re afraid for our children,” she said.

“I don’t want to remove the face veil, even though I didn’t wear it before Daesh came,” she added, using the Arabic acronym for IS.

In the middle of the market was a signpost with two horizontal crossbars that residents said IS fighters used to display the bodies of those killed for violating its harsh rules.

One resident revealed on condition on anonymity that his son, a pharmacist, was hung from the post after being executed on accusations of “dealing with the infidels”.

“They left him there for three days, and I came every day to guard his body so the dogs wouldn’t tear into it,” he said with tears in his eyes.

He refused to give his name or be filmed, saying he too remained afraid that IS could return and take revenge.

Omar shook his head as he recalled the terror IS brought to the town.

“They made us hate living and life,” he said.

“They destroyed our lives.”

Renault shuts down sites after being hit by cyberattack
12:46:00 PMOkogba

French carmaker Renault said Saturday that it had been hit by the wave of cyberattacks sweeping the globe, forcing it to shut down production at several sites to keep the virus from spreading.

“We have been affected,” a spokeswoman told AFP, saying they were assessing the situation to try to find a solution. “Work is going on since last night. We are doing what is needed to counter this attack.”

The attack prompted Renault to stop production at several sites in France, part of measures being taken to stop the virus from spreading.

It did not identify the sites, but a union source said the factory at Sandouville in northern Normandy was one of the main sites affected.

A spokesman at the site, whose 3,400 employees normally produce about 640 utility vehicles a day, confirmed it had been a victim of the cyberattack.

“Production was affected overnight but luckily there was no full production scheduled for this weekend, only some ‘stamping’ operations,” he said.

Teams were working on the problem, and he estimated that work would resume on Monday morning.

Another factory that was hit, at Douai, also in northern France, was not paralysed because operations were halted for the weekend, but teams were working to evaluate the extent of the breach, a plant official said.

– ‘Bad surprises –
Car production was also halted in Slovenia after computers at the headquarters of Renault’s Revoz subsidiary in Novo Mesto were affected, a spokeswoman told AFP.

“We can confirm that on Friday, May 12, some problems occurred on certain parts of Revoz’s information system that led to the halting of production during the night,” the spokeswoman said.

Production remained suspended Saturday, she added.

Renault also said malfunctioning IT systems had led it to curtail activity at a plant operated by its Dacia subsidiary in Mioveni, Romania, requiring it send many employees home on Saturday.

Renault is the first French company to confirm it has been affected by Friday’s wave of cyberattacks, which apparently exploited a flaw exposed in documents leaked from the US National Security Agency.

France’s ANSSI digital security agency said that for the moment, it knew of no other French victims of the attack.

But the agency’s director, Guillaume Poupart, told AFP there were probably others who would discover breaches in the coming hours or days.

“There’s a fear that, on Monday morning especially, we’ll have some bad surprises when people turn on their computers,” he said.

N-power: Over 2,000 beneficiaries in Taraba paid allowances-Official
12:30:16 PMOkogba

Mrs Beatrice Kitchener, the N-power Focal Person in Taraba, said on Saturday in Jalingo, that over 2000 volunteers, under the Federal Government's Social Investment Scheme, were paid their allowances promptly.

N-Power

Kitchener said that her office had updated the profiles of another 1000 volunteers, expected to be paid soon.

She said that the error made by the unit in updating the profiles of the 1,000 volunteers caused the delay, but had been resolved.

Kitchener noted that discrepancies between bank details and profiles of the volunteers were partly responsible for their invalidation.

She said that the Bank Verification Number ( BVN) details indicated that some of the disqualified volunteers were already employed, while others exceeded the maximum 35 years requirement.

Kitchener said another set of over 400 volunteers, who were erroneously alleged to be absent from duty, were expected to be paid by the end of May.

The focal person said that out of the 30,000 applications for both N-power employment and N-power empowerment from the state, 3,965 applicants were successful for N-power employment category.

She warned the volunteers against the formation of a group called, `Association of Volunteers,' adding that the association was illegal.

" Some volunteers that have challenges have formed an illegal association accusing me of being responsible for their inability to receive their money.

"Let me make it very clear that my position is to coordinate N-power activities; I don't pay volunteers even their screening was done by NOA and NYSC staff.

"Payment of volunteers is done by the Federal Government, not Taraba Government; therefore, we cannot deny anyone his money or even deduct anything from it.

"Any volunteer that has issues should come to us to help him update his profile so that he can be paid rather than resorting to mischief and blackmail, "the official warned.

Some disqualified N-power volunteers in the state had accused Kitchener of not doing enough to address their plight.

Italy expels Tunisian connected to Berlin market attacker
12:23:08 PMNwafor Polycarp

Italy has expelled a Tunisian citizen suspected of having been in contact with the man who killed 12 people by driving a truck through a Christmas market in Berlin in 2016, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

"The 36 year-old had been living on the southern island of Sicily, where Berlin attacker Anis Amri spent time in jail and a deportation centre,'' the ministry said in a statement.

He gave Amri a telephone and the two stayed in contact after the latter moved to Germany.

Amri returned to Italy after the Dec. 19, 2016 attack, and was shot dead by Milan police.

"Investigators tapped the telephone of the other Tunisian and discovered he had been in contact with extremist suspects and was planning to cross illegally to France,'' the ministry said.

They tracked him down in the northern city of Turin on May 2 and held him in a repatriation centre before accompanying him on a flight to Tunisia.

The ministry said that Italy had so far expelled 174 people suspected of religious extremism since January 2015.
