…as two owner states inaugurate new Governing Council
The Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and his Oyo state counterparts, Senator Abiola Ajimobi on Monday evening reaffirmed commitment to turn Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) the best university in Nigeria.

The governors of the two owner states said no iota of distraction from any quarter would prevent them from resuscitating the university and make it the most viable citadel of knowledge in Nigeria and Africa.

This was as even the two Governors inaugurated a 7-man Governing Council for the university to pilot its affairs for the next four years.

The newly inaugurated Governing Council is headed by a retired Head of Service of the Federation, Professor Oladapo Afolabi as Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of the institution.

Other members of the Governing Council include: Professor Lai Olurode, Prof. (Mrs) Olaide Adedokun, Mr. Abiodun AbdulJelil Owonikoko SAN, Mr. Isiaka Olagoke, Mr. Tise Adenipekun and Bade Adesina respectively.

Aregbesola-Ajimobi

While inaugurating the new Governing Council at the Oyo state Governor’s Office, Ibadan, Oyo state, the Governors of the two owner states called on the new Council to do all humanly possible to rejuvenate, revamp and reposition the institution to the greater heights being aspired by all.

In his remarks, the Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who described the university as one of the few higher institutions in Nigeria with best products, said the two states would not relent in their efforts to galvanise every opportunity that could help the university to accomplish her aims and objectives.

He said the two states on assumption of offices have been working assiduously to strengthen the joint ownership of the institution, a move which according to him had earned the university several accolades and achievements.

Governor Aregbesola said the two governments of Osun and Oyo have done much in maintaining the good reputation and rank of the institution as been designed by the founding fathers.

While charging the new members of the Governing Council on the need to complement the already established myriads of development and transformation in the citadel of knowledge, Aregbesola said it is time for them (members of the new Governing Council) to do the needful and take great advantage in the current situation to uplift the university in the interest of both states and public at large.

According to him, it is not a doubt that the newly inaugurated Governing Council members are crop of seasoned and eminent personalities that have all it takes to move the university forward at this critical times.

“From your distinctions in various aspects of life to your track records, you are highly distinguished and unique.

” I am highly proud to have you as members of the new Governing Council of our great University.

“I expect extra-ordinary performance from you all. That is not to say your predecessors were not good. To us those you are succeeding did their best to administer and represent us as the supervisors of the university but the uniqueness on your own calling now, is the circumstance that you are beginning your tenure.

“You must be committed to the efforts made by the owner states to sustain the joint ownership of the institution in line with the spirit of the founding fathers and make the university the best of all in the country.

“The present governments of Osun and Oyo have not only brought about huge transformation but also maintained the trends of quality high education as being reflected in the institution’s track records.

“It is for this reason that we want the new Governing Council to within the shortest time possible to rejuvenate the university, reposition it and bring it back not just to enviable position but to make it the best university in Nigeria.

“There is no doubt that LAUTECH was known to be the best university in Nigeria and we want you to maintain this tempo in placing our university above its peers in Nigeria in churning out graduates not only virile in academics but distinguished in character.

“We want you to perform miracle if possible as being done by Jesus christ who turned water to wine according to christiandom so as to ensuring that the university is not only resuscitated but placed to great heights ever known in history.

“We want every member of this Council to perform another miracle that will turn around the fortunes of the university for the betterment of all.

“We want to use your tenure to perform wonders in making the comatose of LAUTECH within the shortest possible time the best university in Nigeria”, Aregbesola tasked the Governing Council.

Also, the Oyo state Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi attributed the inauguration of the new Governing Council to the fulfilment of one of the recommendations given by the Visitation Panel set up by the two owner states.

He said the steps were taken towards the  sustainability and achievement of the aims and objectives of the founding fathers in making the University to be the best in Nigeria.

Governor Ajimobi said the two states were through the inauguration of the Governing Council showcasing to the world their absolute commitment to goals and objectives of the founding fathers.

According to Governor Ajimobi, “LAUTECH is an institution owns by the Osun and Oyo governments and we are irrevocably committed to this joint ownership just as we are determined to make the university the best in Nigeria.

“Like all institutions, there are challenges and anyone who claims to be a leader or manager wants results must never be afraid of the challenges.

“Infact, it is because of these challenges that made us to be here because we are ever committed to surmount those challenges as LAUTECH is no exception as we all know the historical perspection of the institution.

“We are carefully selected the members of this Governing Council whose track records can not be faulted and there is no doubt in our minds that all the members of new Council are eminently qualified not only to resurrect LAUTECH but to reposition the institution.

“We assure you that looking at the membership that we have, there is no doubt in our minds that within the next three months, we will start to see first thing to avert the undeserving trends that we have and to begin to reposition LAUTECH accordingly.

“It is based on this that we quickly implement one of the recommendations of the visitation panel to ensure that we inaugurate and put in place a Governing Council.

“We are also working seriously to ensure that LAUTECH remains sustainable and achieve the aims and objectives of the founding fathers in making the University to be the best in Nigeria.

“We are recommitting ourselves to that goals and objectives of the founding fathers as we are sure that by what it will take, we would reposition and reopen the university and LAUTECH must work”, Ajimobi stressed.

While appealing to striking workers of the institution on the need to reason with Government’s stance and support on the new move to reposition the university, Ajimobi said the owner states will do all possible to turn around the institution.

“We are committed to ensure that we have a forensic audit of the financial of the management, students and programmes of the university just as we are taking this opportunity to appeal to all the stakeholders to please allow sanity to prevail.

“There is no where in the world where employees of an institution will prevent the owners from repositioning the institution. There is no where in the world where workers unions of the institution will prevent the forensic audit of that institution.

“So, we are appealing to either the Union, the Workers or students of LAUTECH to please allow us to promote this university and reposition it according to the dictates of modern day management and institutional development.

“It is on this note that we are saying, that the new Governing Council has now been given all the powers to do whatever necessary to resuscitate, to develop, progress and reposition the university so that it becomes the number one university in Nigeria”, Ajimobi added.

Responding on behalf of other members of the new Governing Council, the Chairman of the Council, Professor Oladapo Afolabi assured the owner states of improved and better performance.

Shell shuts down key supply pipeline in Nigeria
3:20:45 PMadekunle

Anglo-Dutch energy giant Shell said Tuesday it has shut down a key crude supply pipeline in Nigeria’s restive south because of a leak.

Shell engineer

Shell subsidiary the Shell Petroleum Development Corporation of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) said the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) was shut on July 21 at B-Dere in Ogoniland.

“Efforts are ongoing for a joint investigation visit to determine the cause of the leak and repair of the pipeline,” the company said in a statement.

The volume of production shut-in was not disclosed.

The TNP feeds the Bonny Light export terminal, which has a production capacity of 225,000 barrels per day of oil.

Militants and oil thieves in the region have repeatedly attacked the pipeline.

Community unrest forced Shell to quit oil production in Ogoniland in 1993 but the company still runs a network of pipelines criss-crossing the area.

A spokesman for the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) pressure group said it was not responsible for the latest shutdown.

“We are not involved in the incident we only heard about it. Our position however remains that Shell is not welcome on our land,” Fegalo Nsuke told AFP.

He called on Shell to address the issues of environmental degradation, neglect, injustice and under-development before considering the resumption of production in Ogoniland.

“If they want our oil, they have to take care of the people,” he added.

MOSOP founder Ken Saro-Wiwa was executed with eight other activists by Nigeria’s then-military government in November 1995 on trumped-up murder charges at a secret trial.

Many believed his conviction was politically motivated because of his opposition to Shell’s presence in Ogoniland, where there have been repeated oil spills.

In 2015, Shell agreed to pay £55 million ($72 million, 61 million euros) in compensation to more than 15,500 people in Ogoniland and agreed to start a clean-up of two major spills.

Mark Zuckerberg fights SpaceX founder Musk on social media over artificial intelligence
3:17:29 PMTony

Visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg were trading jabs on social media over artificial intelligence this week in a debate that has turned personal between the two technology luminaries.

Musk, the founder of Tesla, SpaceX and other ventures, on Tuesday, claimed Zuckerberg’s knowledge of artificial intelligence was “limited,” two days after the Facebook founder described “naysayers” as “irresponsible.”

The debate underscored the rift in the tech community on whether new technologies capable of creating intelligent machines like robots and self-driving cars would be a blessing or a curse for humanity.

Musk has long warned of the potential for machines to get so smart that humans become tantamount to pets, while Zuckerberg has touted the potential for artificial intelligence to improve lives.

Facebook is among the Silicon Valley’s largest investors in artificial intelligence.

Mark Zuckerberg

While live streaming on the leading social network from his yard on Sunday, Zuckerberg touched on the topic while answering questions from viewers.

“With AI especially, I am really optimistic,” Zuckerberg said.

“And I think people who are naysayers and try to drum up these doomsday scenarios —  I just, I don’t understand it. It’s really negative and in some ways I actually think it is pretty irresponsible.”

When asked about Zuckerberg’s comment early Tuesday during an exchange on Twitter, Musk wrote that he has discussed the topic with Zuckerberg and that “his understanding of the subject is limited.”

Musk more than a year ago took part in creating a nonprofit research company devoted to developing artificial intelligence that will help people and not hurt them.

– People pets –

“If we create some digital super-intelligence that exceeds us in every way by a lot, it is very important that it be benign,” Musk said a while back at a conference in California.

He reasoned that even a benign situation with ultra-intelligent AI would put people so far beneath the machine they would be “like a house cat.”

“I don’t love the idea of being a house cat,” Musk said, envisioning the creation of neural lacing that magnifies people’s brain power by linking them directly to computing capabilities.

At a gathering of US governors this month, Musk contended that artificial intelligence  is a terrifying problem and a threat to human civilization.

He argued for the technology to be regulated sooner rather than later for risk of safeguards being put in place too late.

Smart machines could start wars or kill people in streets, Musk has warned.

Musk is also behind a startup devoted to neural lace that would enable brains to interface directly with computers.

Such a “Neuralink” would have the potential to level the playing field a bit by enabling people to directly access processing power and perhaps even download memories for storage.

Zuckerberg last year created his own personal “butler” imbued with artificial intelligence, named Jarvis, which plays with his family.

Fani-Kayode and Rochas are not in the same class – Ndukwe
3:12:33 PMTony

Rochas Okorocha's jibe at Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, following the wide doubts expressed by Nigerians at the authenticity of the photograph emanating from the APC governors' purported visit to Muhammadu Buhari in London is a sign of desperation to serve the evil purposes for which the Imo State governor has been procured.

This is true to the character of Okorocha who is well known for his garrulousness which he mistakes for oratory, with which, unfortunately, he has been misleading the good people of Imo State.

A man who serves and defends a president and government that has insulted, marginalized and humiliated more of his own Igbo people than any other government in the history of Nigeria outside of the civil war.

For a man whose party has unprecedentedly threatened to arrest the moment he steps out from the immunity he currently enjoys, Rochas should actually be hiding his head in shame when men like Fani-Kayode are talking.

Uche Onyeagucha, an APC chieftain and a former member of the House of Representatives, has accused Okorocha of lying serially when he said he had spoilt Imo people with projects when, in fact, Rochas has only littered the state with a plethora of abandoned projects, most of which exist only on paper.

In lampooning the governor, Onyeagucha had said: "…Rochas should be in prison for the way and manner he has looted Imo State. He should rather be sewing his prison uniform.

"At the appropriate time, Imo people will beam to the world, the many grisly misdeeds of this cruel administration… He has deceived our people for too long, he has bamboozled them with lies, and we have tolerated it long enough."

Need we say more?

A man who deceitfully created a phantom Imo Air that soon disappeared into thin air without any notice after it was commissioned with so much pomp and circumstance does not deserve any serious attention.

His deceit has since been confirmed by Imo people.

The truth of the matter is that Fani-Kayode and Rochas are not in the same class. Imo people thought otherwise but today they know better. Our joy for them is that 2019 is just around the corner. They will surely kick him out, and his emptiness would be exposed.

The truth that scares the likes of Okorocha is that Fani-Kayode is a confirmed Cambridge-trained lawyer whose great grandfather, Rev. Emmanuel Adedapo Kayode, his grandfather, Victor Adedapo Kayode were UK-trained, and his father, Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode, was not just a prominent lawyer who finished from Cambridge University in 1941 and came top in the British Bar examination for the whole of British Commonwealth of nations, but he was also the Deputy Premier of Western Nigeria, and the one who successfully moved for Nigeria's independence in the Federal House of Assembly in 1958.

He was a Queens Counsel, the third Nigerian to be made a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and set up the first indigenous law firm with the erudite late Chief Frederick Rotimi Williams and Chief Bode Thomas.

One can go on and on.

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode himself needs no introduction. A Cambridge trained-lawyer who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1985, he practiced law in the firm of Kayode & Sowemimo before he ventured into politics where he rose to the peak of his career, becoming a two-time minister of the Federal Republic after being appointed the first ever Special Assistant on Public Affairs to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The import of all these is that Rochas has no history backing up his claim to fame today. He is alleged to come from an unknown root.

One then wonders how such a man whose highest educational qualification is a mere Advanced Diploma would dare attack Fani-Kayode. A man that when you mention the name Williams Shakespeare to he would ask you if that is the name of his village barber rather than being one of the greatest literary minds and writer ever known in history.

If he was not a governor, FFK would have had him crawl on his knees and kiss his feet. He should know his place and stay out of our line of fire for his own good.

Vaginal ring preventing HIV to be tested in Africa
3:01:34 PMadekunle

By Gabriel Olawale
After recording success amongst teenage girls in the US, plans are in progress to test in Africa, a vaginal ring that prevents HIV infection.

The ring contains an antiretroviral drug called dapivirine and is used for a month at a time.

Dapivirine inhibits HIV's reverse transcriptase enzyme, a protein vital to HIV's ability to replicate and cause an infection.

Each intravaginal ring contains one or more microbicides that are intended to be delivered into the vaginal compartment at a high concentration and to be directly absorbed by the cells and tissues.

The flexible ring, which sits on the cervix, is said to cut infection by 56 percent.

Its usage gives women the freedom to protect themselves without relying on men to wear condoms.

At the end of a six-month trial to ascertain its effectiveness, researchers found that 87 percent of ninety-six sexually active girls who partook had detectable levels of the drug in their vagina.

The study investigators concluded that the ring is safe and acceptable to young women.

"HIV doesn't distinguish between a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old. Access to safe and effective HIV prevention shouldn't either, young women of all ages deserve to be protected," said Sharon Hillier, principal investigator and vice chair of the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

If the ring gets regulatory approval, it would be the first method of prevention exclusively for women.

The study was presented at the 9th International AIDS Society conference in Paris.

9mobile asks Citi, Standard Bank to find new investors – source
2:56:52 PMadekunle

LAGOS – 9mobile, the mobile operator formerly known as Etisalat Nigeria, has appointed Citigroup and Standard Bank to find an investor to buy into the firm and three companies have shown interest, a banking source close to the deal said on Tuesday.

Etisalat
Etisalat rebrands, now 9Mobile

India’s Bharti Airtel, which already has a presence in Nigeria, as well as Britain’s Vodafone and French telecom company Orange have shown interest, the source told Reuters.

“These are still early interest signals but they are looking at the company as an attractive entry strategy,” the source said.

Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele said earlier on Tuesday that advisers had been appointed to manage the sale of 9mobile, which is the fourth-largest mobile operator in sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest economy and most populous nation.

The central bank and Nigeria’s telecoms regulator intervened this month to save the company from collapse and prevent creditors putting it into receivership, leading to a change in its board and management, as well as the new name 9mobile.

9mobile has 20 million subscribers with a 14 percent share of the Nigerian market. South Africa’s MTN is the market leader with 47 percent, Nigeria’s Globacom has 20 percent and Bharti Airtel’s local subsidiary has 19 percent.

9mobile declined to comment.

Citigroup, Standard Bank, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Orange and were not immediately available to comment.

Emefiele, speaking after the central bank’s policy meeting on Tuesday, said 9mobile’s revenue was stable and it made 16 billion naira ($52.5 million) in June. The governor said the company had not lost subscribers due to its debt crisis.

He said the advisers would organise a tender to request proposals from prospective investors. He did not provide a timeline but said the management of the telecoms company by its interim board should not last more than 90 to 180 days.

The telecoms company took out a $1.2 billion loan four years ago from 13 local lenders to refinance existing debt and expand its mobile network but it struggled to repay the credit due to a currency crisis and recession in Nigeria.

The crisis forced the telecoms company’s one-time UAE parent Etisalat to terminate its management agreement with its Nigerian business and surrender its 45 percent stake to a trustee following the regulatory intervention.

9mobile’s Chief Executive Boye Olusanya said earlier this month he would be focused on getting the telecoms company back on track to make a profit, while working on the paperwork to eventually raise new capital. He also said the company was open to new investors. ($1 = 304.75 naira)

Solabomi Okonkwo: Unveiling a new leader in marketing communications
2:52:32 PMadekunle

By Oluwatoyin Bayagbon
Women are no longer trailblazers, the only woman in their field; they are part of an overflowing pipeline of future leaders. Women are no longer competing for just one seat at the table; they are sitting side by side on executive boards at companies large and small.

Women are no longer just employees; they are owners and co- owners of thriving businesses, shaping the marketing communications environment in Nigeria, Africa and the world over. Solabomi Okonkwo is one of such women.

The name Solabomi rings a bell in the hearts of many who have been privileged to meet her at both a personal and professional level. With her wealth of experience across multiple industries in complex sales environments, her strengths across the marketing mix provide clients with innovative marketing and communications strategies to fit their business, their budgets and their goals.

This comes as no surprise having spent over fifteen (15) years in key business areas including business development, brand building, events management, and experiential marketing. She is also a certified ISO quality auditor.

Transforming creative vision into meaningful customer action is one of the hallmarks of Solabomi's career, which is evident in the countless campaigns and events she has secured under her belt.

From the highly successful Arsenal player's visit to Nigeria in 2012 under the aegis of Airtel Nigeria, to her keen involvement in the brand positioning of several blue chip brands such as Johnny Walker, Ciroc, Orijin and Malta Guinness and even the seamless execution of Golf and Polo tourneys across the country, she has proven her mettle time and again and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Her three year stint at NM Encore from 2014 to 2017 saw her propelling the experiential marketing and activation agency to higher levels through unrivaled leadership, innovation, creativity and originality, thereby redefining Nigeria's experiential marketing landscape despite the odds.

This doyen maintains a keen awareness of the dynamism and evolving principles that must be applied for brands to remain competitive both locally and in a global context, especially as consumers are increasingly getting in tune with global trends.

She strongly holds to the theory that customer-driven marketing philosophy backed up with innovative marketing solutions with a focus on "Below the Line" (BTL) marketing techniques are paramount as this will set the pace in revolutionizing the MarComms industry In the near future.

Solabomi, in analyzing women as a key consumer subset trusts that recognizing and understanding women, as a diverse segment of a target audience, is critical. "Marketers must look past the often-reductive constraints of gender stereotypes," she says.

The temptation for female MarComm professionals to attempt to use personal experience to inform strategy to target women is becoming all too common, she admits.

In order to be effective, however, one cannot overstress the need to understand the nuances of many different segments and psychographic profiles of women today, avoiding stereotypes and "me-marketing" which function around many assumptions rooted in generalizations.

"Stepping away from "women as consumers" to think of exactly who, what, where, and why to target a subset of the powerful female segment is a skill highly valued in today's commercial marketplace," she concludes.

Against this solid background, Solabomi was chosen as one of the panelists for the African Women in Leadership Conference 2017 (AWLC) held in Accra, Ghana, with the theme "Unleashing the Power, Inspiring Greatness."

The conference, a 3-day women's leadership, development and empowerment event which took place from 29th March – 1st April 2017, brought together women from diverse backgrounds to interact, dialogue and discuss issues that are relevant to the achievement of gender parity and to agree on actions that will inspire change in order to advance the leadership status of women across the continent.

Speaking to career development and the role women play, Solabomi believes that negotiating, telling your brand story, and asserting know how is key to shooting through the hoops successfully. "Women must self-promote and navigate the corporate environment to develop their careers" she says.

Women should "sit at the table," showing an understanding of the power and expertise they possess. If women plan to lead, they must demonstrate their value in addition to the products and services of which they market. Women MarComm professionals must sell their story, voice opinions, and not be afraid to know what they're looking for, Solabomi opines.

The voice of women is just one narrative necessary for a successful and holistic approach to marketing communications today. Indeed, the ways in which businesses incorporate and facilitate the promotion of women leaders will contribute to the richness and substance of the business world.

Having women at the executive table is one way to facilitate these evolving dialogues; engaging female employees and new recruits is equally important. The MarComm space is leading the charge by continuing to encourage new thought leaders and develop diverse talent pools.

Solabomi, an astute entrepreneur has a number of projects rolled up under sleeves. In the next couple of years we would be watching to see what she has on her plate and we surely will not be disappointed owing to her sterling track record of professionalism over the years.

#NigeriaStartsWithMe: Youths share vision, expectations
2:51:04 PMadekunle

Young Nigerians were at their creative best as they painted apt pictures of the Nigeria of their dreams through various contributions to the NigeriaStartsWithMe book which was recently launched by Sahara Group in Lagos.

The 98-page book features short articles on several initiatives that can be deployed to place Nigeria firmly on the pedestal of sustainable growth.

The book also captures certain landmarks in Nigeria under sections tagged, "Explore Nigeria," which were included to promote the nation's heritage.

Unveiled in March 2017, the #NigeriaStartsWithMe project is an initiative of Sahara Group, which tasked young people to volunteer practical ideas on moving Nigeria forward. The project required contributions to be based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking at the book launch, Sahara Group's Executive Director and Co-Founder, Tonye Cole said the ideas expressed by youths "are indicative of the fact that we truly have talented young people whose creative energies should be harnessed towards effective nation building".

He added: "the level of participation and quality of contribution we received reinforced our belief in the ability of young Nigerians to lead the charge towards the #NewNigeria vision.

Twitter was abuzz with ideas from youths with over 1000 comments whilst the portal dedicated to the project via our website (www.sahara-group.com), received over 158 contributions."

Chinasa Nwachukwu, a contributor who wrote on "education through sensitization" noted that: "a radical transformation of the Nigerian society should begin from a change of the individual mindset; education of the youths through sensitization programs about their rights, their limitations and the power they have over the government."

Making a case for patronising 'Made-in-Nigeria' fashion designers, Tobenna Menakaya wrote: "In addition to a more tailored satisfaction of personal style, #WearNigeria will drive the necessary growth and perfection in Nigerian fashion as it gives a voice to home-grown talent and fosters creativity and advancement which would trigger diversification and job creation within the industry."

Focusing on the need to reduce climate change, Oladeji Oladayo wrote: "increased support for investment in renewable energy such as biogas and solar energy would greatly expand the scope for development of low-carbon energy."

Cole urged the nation's youths to sustain their contributions to transforming Nigeria by positively, constructively and consistently lending their voices to national discourses through social media platforms.

He said the book would be formally presented to Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as well as the leaders of other organs of government to ensure the contributions and propositions captured in the book receive the backing of key decision makers across the nation. "We will also distribute the book to members of the organized private sector, academia, multilateral institutions and civil organisations to expand the scope of achieving some of the suggestions that are critical to realizing the SDGs in Nigeria," he said.

According to Cole, Sahara Group would keep the #NigeriaStartsWithMe project open to allow other young Nigerians send in their contributions "to ensure we keep the conversation going until we see the results we all desire, that is the emergence of a greater Nigeria."

Buratai: A patriot "Numero Uno"
2:49:22 PMTony

I thought deeply about a suitable caption to appropriately capture my elations when I reflected on the Nigerian army and the anti-terrorism campaigns in the last two years. After much thought, in the light of another heroic celebration of the Army boss, I was also careful enough to adopt a choice that would fairly represent the positive judgment of majority of Nigerians.

Nigerians again massively voted Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai for another decoration as Nigeria's Man of the Year 2017. It is another seldom expression of Nigerians’ unreserved thankfulness to Gen. Buratai's selflessness and patriotism to his country.

He is one of the several eminent and distinguished Nigerians to be so honoured  by The Nigerian, an online news portal, based in London,  but whose editorial focus is about Nigerians in any part of the world. The medium has positively and aggressively projected, promoted and defended the integrity, image and sovereignty of our dear country, Nigeria before the outside world.

Like hinted earlier, while contemplating a public appraisal and this open epistle specifically directed to Gen. Buratai on the pending grandeur event scheduled for August 2017, several options assailed my mind.

But in order to satisfy myself and millions of Nigerians who are reaffirming their appreciation of Gen. Buratai, the thorough breed professional soldier and the pillar of excellence, I settled for the Italian originated, but English- adopted phrase " Numero  Uno," which literally means " number one" or fluidly put as " the best one."

A slight touch of modification or embellishment of the caption left me with an adorable version for this piece as – "Buratai: A Patriot Numero Uno." When the different words are fused, and interpreted collectively in English, it leaves one with something phrased differently, but meaning the same thing and expressed as " Buratai, the Number One Nigerian Patriot."

This caption satisfies my inner feelings and most other Nigerians in the sense that patriotism is at the core of the success of  every public assignment. Patriotism and loyalty are twin brothers, and unless these virtues are blended seamlessly, its difficult to make an impact in public leadership or any form of public assignment.

Unarguably, Gen. Buratai  is a perfect embodiment  of these virtues throughout the years of service to his fatherland.  But the exhibition of these  attributes became pronounced when President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him the COAS and the ombudsman of the counter-insurgency war in Nigeria.

In my large mind and towering knowledge of complex and delicate wars like counter-terrorism, creating the expected impact is a combination of several factors. It is beyond the sounds of boots and guns of soldiers; it is not only about the sophistry of armoury and it is not all about battlefield reinforcements of arms and ammunitions or even the resilience of troops. It is much about a commitment fired by the zeal of patriotism and loyalty to one's country.

That Gen. Buratai made incredible  impacts in the counter-terrorism war or even believed in the cause of defeating terrorists  and terrorism in Nigeria  required his patriotism and loyalty to the nation. He has imbibed and exuded enough of it in battling insurgents.

Many may not understand. But I do know that had Gen. Buratai purged himself of patriotism and loyalty to Nigeria, it was easy for him to have sabotaged the counter-insurgency war. The self-confessed sponsors of Boko Haram terrorism in Nigeria, the Republic of Iran, which we all know are desperate to nourish terrorism in Nigeria  would have bribed the leader of the counter-insurgency war with princely sums to allow it thrive.

An unpatriotic Gen. Buratai would have consequently also diverted federal government funds voted to battle insurgency. He would have reserved his numerous strategies and tactics for another day or battle.   I suspect that the near assassination attempt on Gen. Buratai  by the Sheik Ibraham El-Zakzaky led  Shiites terrorists sect in Nigeria- The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN)  in Zaria, December 2015 stemmed from his refusal  to compromise the counter-insurgency war.

It is only patriotism that compelled Gen. Buratai to endure the malicious attacks from internal detractors, agents and sympathizers of Boko Haram terrorism on his personality and Nigerian soldiers. That he ignored all of it and stayed afloat is evidence of his patriotism and loyalty to Nigeria.

Today, Gen. Buratai knows more than anyone else that a tree can only die when the taproot is cut down . And the final order for the capture of the factional Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau within 40 days is a decision propelled by patriotism instincts in the service of Nigeria.

And that Gen. Buratai personally led Nigerian troops to the trenches, caves and forests to smoke out terrorists was spurred by his conviction of patriotism.   And that he never betrayed the cause of defeating terrorism is patriotic enough.

Therefore, many Nigerians like myself, who are dispassionate in assessing the terror war in  the country are not oblivious of the silent motivating force of patriotism and loyalty in Buratai that has enabled him to decimate and defeat terrorism in Nigeria.

Nigerians who today savour peace and respite from terrorism;  the internally displaced persons who have returned back to their forlorn and ravaged villages and communities, are all reaping from Gen. Buratai's patriotism and loyalty to his country.

The messiah-like sacrifices of all gradations that Gen. Buratai and Nigerian soldiers made to liberate Nigeria from the chains of the various acts of terrorism are their signposts of patriotism to the country. That's why the 2017 Nigeria's Man of the Year Award to Gen. Buratai is apt and germane.

I cannot end this piece without equally appreciating Gen. Buratai's retinue of supporting Army Commanders. They were also very committed to their country and to the cause of defeating Boko Haram terrorists . They played very active roles as a team to free Nigeria from the claws of terrorism, whether by Boko Haram or humbled the violence-prone separatists or secessionists sects in the Southeast. They were handy to quell the emergent terrorism in the face of armed bandits and cattle rustlers in the Northwest and conquered the criminal militancy in the Niger Delta region to restore Nigeria's economic base.

As The Nigerian confers on Gen. Buratai   2017 Man of the Year award in London, I encourage Gen. Buratai, the "People’s  General" to grace the event personally. He is persuaded to add glamour to the ceremony by nominating some soldiers from all the regions where our troops are on special assignments and have restored peace and reclaimed lands formerly  occupied by terrorists and armed bandits  to attend the event.   This will really confer a feeling of fulfillment on Nigerians.

The gesture would sufficiently convey to the people his open acknowledgement of their appreciation of his excellent performance as leader of the counter-insurgency war in Nigeria . We are with you in body and spirit, Gen. Buratai, Nigeria's Numero Uno.

Reason for retaining MPR is …. Emefiele
2:39:33 PMNwafor Polycarp

Mr Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says easing the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) will pull real lending rates to a negative territory.

Emefiele said this while addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja on the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Meeting.

He said that any reduction in MPR would be a disincentive to investments in the country.

He said that disincentives to investment would hurt the stability that had been achieved in the Foreign Exchange (Forex) market and there was need to ensure this would not happen.

"That is the rationale and the actions of the MPC will be reflected in whatever direction we think is good for Nigerians.

"As Nigerians, we should understand that there is a need for a low interest rate because we know that it will make it easy for people who want to borrow money at a low rate.

"We know easing will inject liquidity in the system.

"But we are saying that inflation rate at 16 per cent at the moment is still considered very high in the light of studies that have been conducted.

"Studies conducted have shown that there are acceptable modules for computing the inflation threshold and these modules have computed inflation threshold for Nigeria at a range of between 10 to 12 per cent.

"And what that means is that when inflation is above 12 per cent, no matter the action that you take to stimulate growth it will retard growth,'' he said.

Emefiele said that the important thing to do was to reverse the trend in inflation and expressed delight at the effort made so far at reducing the rate from 18.8 down to 16.1 per cent.

He expressed optimism that the rate of inflation would continue to trend downwards in the nearest future.

On the banks' complaints about liquidity mop-up, the CBN governor said bankers were economic agents interested in making profits.

He said the CBN, however, as a regulator faced with the various data confronting it, had a role to play in stabilizing the economy.

"And doing our work means we must continue to do what we have done to continue to achieve the sliding trend in inflation and stabilise the foreign exchange market.

"That is what we are doing by injecting dollars into the market and we will continue to do so until we get to a point where the MPC thinks is the right direction.

"The CBN remains a player in the market and from time to time, given our sensibility on where we think the market should be, we will intervene.

"And that is why you have seen our level of intervention in the last five or six months and I want to seize this opportunity to say that the intensity for that intervention will continue,'' Emefiele said.

On the intervention of the CBN on Etisalat, the CBN Governor said it was temporarily, adding that the intervention was to ensure stability in the industry.

According to him, Etisalat is one of the four biggest telecom company in Nigeria with subscriber base of over 20 million, a very robust revenue base and employs over 4000 people.

"We observed that the activity and attempt by some creditors was going to lead to the dismemberment of that company and we thought that the subscribers could not run about without services.

"And we could not allow over 4000 staff of this company to run in disarray because something wrong has happened

"That is why we, the regulators, decided to intervene so as not to hurt interest of people that have interest in the company.

"I must say that the intervention has been positive, the company has retained its subscriber base, its staff have continued their work and its revenue has remained stable at about N16 billion monthly.

"The intervention through the institutionalisation of an interim board headed by the regulators is temporary and our plan is that this should not take more than 180 days.

He said that advisers had been appointed to midwife the process for a major investor to intervene in the company and take it over.

He said that potential investors were already showing interest and at the end of the day the best candidate would be chosen.

Senate passes Nigerian Peace Corps Bill
2:35:12 PMNwafor Polycarp

The Senate on Tuesday passed the Bill Establishing the Nigerian Peace Corps(NPC).

The Bill, which was sponsored by Sen. Bayero Nafada(APC-Gombe), is meant to empower and provide employment for the youths, facilitate peace, volunteerism, community services and nation building.

The bill was passed in a unanimous voice vote after the Chairman, Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Sen. David Umaru, presented report on issues surrounding adoption of the conference report on the bill.

He said the major objective of the NPC bill, which is to provide employment for the youths, could be achieved by strengthening existing agencies and not necessarily creating new ones.

He said it would prevent the Federal Government from being overburdened.

He said the committee, however observed that the powers and functions of the NPC called for concern and urged that they be subjected to further examination.

"The right vested by the Bill in clause 37 (1) (a) on members of the Corps to "access all records of any person or authority" is too broad in scope and to that extent constitutes an infringement on the
right to privacy guaranteed by the Constitution, under Section 37.

"This power is unnecessary, given that the Corps is not an investigative agency,'' he said.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki said the journey towards establishing the NPC had been a long one.

He commended the committee for a good job and expressed optimism that when signed into law, the bill would help to address the problem of unemployment among youths.

The NPC bill was passed in the House of Representatives in June 2016,while the Senate passed its version in Nov. 2016.

The two chambers set up a conference committee to reconcile the areas of differences in the bill.

The Senate at its plenary sitting on May 2, 2017, deliberated on report of the conference committee, and referred it to the Committee on Judiciary, to investigate into some allegations against the NPC.

Why Fayose is not among 7 govs visiting Buhari in London – Presidency
2:34:02 PMadekunle

——Excludes media to save money
—–As Yari leads delegation
By Johnbosco Agbakwuru

ABUJA – THE presidency Tuesday exonerated itself from the selection of the seven governors that were chosen to visit President Mugammadu Buhari in London, saying that the selection was handled by the governors forum.

The presidency also said that the non inclusion of the media team especially television or newspapers could be to save money.

The delegation led by the Chairman of Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Yari has Governors of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, Umar Gandoje of Kano State, Kassim Shettima of Borno State, the Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom who has been out of the country for about two weeks, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom and Abiola Ajumobi of Oyo state as members.

Governor Fayose and President Buhari

Meantime, the media team of the presidency has said that it is only the medical team of President Buhari who has been on medical vacation since 7th May can determine when the President would return to Nigeria.

Briefing State House Correspondents on the visit of the seven governors led by the Chairman of Governors Forum and Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adeshina said the presidency had no hand in the selection of the delegates to London.

Adeshina who made the clarification while fielding question on why Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State who is the Chairman of of the Peoples Democratic Party

was left out on the delegation said, “The selection was by the governors forum and you will see that the delegation is headed by governor Yari who is chairman of that forum. So that question should go to the forum.”

He explained that unlike the previous visit to the president made by only members of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) governors, this delegation was on a broader platform, the NGF, with membership also drawn from the opposition.

Adesina however informed that he did not have information on who was sponsoring the trip.

On why the president preferred the broadcast option while addressing Nigerians, he said, “It is a question of what he prefers and this is what he prefers for now. He would rather receive that delegation and that is what is happening. If the president opts for address option he will do it.”

He further explained the reason for the visit against the backdrop that it had been reported that President Buhari was recuperating, he said it was the best time for the president to receive visitors as he was recovering.

He said: “Instead of being curious, it should be the right time for the visit. When somebody has recovered or something has happened, it’s in our culture to visit such a person. So, this is the right time to visit the president because the news is that he is recovering and recovering well.”

The presidential aide was unable to confirm the date of two weeks time for the return of the president as announced by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state.

Okorocha, who led APC governors and party leaders to see Buhari last Wednesday, had assured that the president could return to Nigeria within two weeks.

However, Adesina insisted that only the president’s doctors could determine his exact date of return.

The spokesman noted that if anybody had put a date on Buhari’s return, the person could have information that is not available to the media team.

On when the president would return, Adesina stated: “That already is in public domain. He will come back when the doctors certify.

“It is in the letter he wrote to the AU chairman which was made public this afternoon (Tuesday). It also contains that one. He said he was just waiting for his doctors to tell him all is well and then he will return home.

“If anybody is giving a timeline, that person might have information that we don’t have yet.

“But the information at our disposal is that the president will return as soon as his doctors give him the go ahead.”

On his own while giving details on the governors’ mission to the president, the Senior Special Assistant to the president on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, described it as a goodwill visit.

According to him, “The visit is a goodwill visit and there is nothing more than that. I believe Nigerians in various position have yearned to go meet the president and at some point this obviously has not been permitted.

“But given the change in circumstances, you can see that coming from London itself and from the president is welcoming. Is a goodwill visit.

“As a cultural people, we visit people leaving hospital and I’m sure the president himself will be delighted to see people coming from six geo-political zones, coming to convey the goodwill of Nigerians.”

On the absence of presidential media aide on the London trip, he said it may be a way for government to save money.

He said: “Well, how about you thinking about it this way? Probably, we will be saving money.

“Let me tell you, you know I have respects for photographers, we all do and the cameramen. Bayo Omoboriwo (Personal Photographer to the President), is on the flight which is more important than me being there, which he is.

“They say a picture conveys more than a thousand words. Bayo will be there and I think it will be more beneficial to Nigerians than if the Special Adviser was on that trip without a cameraman.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, spoke on the October take off of the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, in Delta state and the ongoing efforts to clean up Ogoniland.

He said, “Next week there is going to be a follow up meeting between the Acting President and the PANDEF.

“You will recalled that last November the President has held a meeting with the leaders of PANDEF where issues of Niger Delta development was discussed in which the Acting President embarked on the visit to the states of the Niger Delta. And since then the president asked that an inter-ministerial committee be composed led by the Vice President to look at all the issues, specifically using the PANDEF demand as the take off point.

“That inter-ministerial committee has been meeting virtually every week. and next week there is going to be a report from the government side, the inter-ministerial committee by acting president and PANDEF.

“Some of the issues to be discussed at the meeting include for instance the issue of modular refineries which we hope that starting from August the will be groundbreaking for the first set of modular refineries.

“Regarding Ogoni clean up, there are also going to give an update of what has been happening. For instance, the coordinating team that was set up for the Ogoni clean up conducted health impact assessment, they have done salt test, water test, they have hired a number of son’s and daughters of Ogoni who are trained on environmental sciences as technical assistants, I think about 15 of them.

“In the next few weeks they are going to go back to Geneva where a wholistic road map on the clean up itself will be concluded with the international partners.

“Another highlight that will be discussed at that meeting is the plan to open the Maritime University in Okorinko in October this year..

“At the last meeting the vice chancellor was asked to bring take off budget that will be approved. Already the NUC has approved a number of courses that will take off once the university is ready to open.”

Wicked step-mother
2:33:48 PMOkogba

Dear Bunmi,

When I broke up with my ex three years ago, I left with our daughter who is now five. She used to have a good relationship with her father until he remarried early last year and his new wife became hostile towards my little girl. As a result, she became reluctant to visit and said that the woman had hit her. When I tried to talk to her, I got nothing but insults.

I told my ex that unless he could guarantee that our daughter would not encounter his hostile wife whenever she visited, he wouldn't be allowed to see her except I was with her. That was some few months ago and my daughter hasn't seen her dad since then. She is happier and seems more confident and I believe I have done the right thing. Do you?

Apinke, by e-ail.

Dear Apinke,

You're right to be concerned when your girl felt intimidated by his father' wife. As unacceptable as that was, your action is equally rash. A child needs to feel the love of both parents.

Your girl may seem happier now but she needs to develop a strong relationship with her father too. A mother needs to encourage her children's bond with both parents, as well as with the rest of the family.

It's obvious you value a man who cares for his child. So encourage your ex to do just that. Keeping him apart from his child is unkind. Apologise to him for threatening the separation you have now imposed.

Let him feel he's needed in his daughter's life and ask him to find his own way to protect your daughter from the hostility of his wife. With time, your ex will value time spent with his daughter more than in the company of a disgruntled wife.

I'll contest 2019 presidency if Buhari declines re-election – Okorocha
2:28:53 PMTony

By Anthony Ogbonna

The Imo state Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has revealed that he would be contesting the 2019 presidential election on two conditions; if President Muhammadu Buhari declines to seek a re-election and if 10 million Nigerians endorse him.

Governor Okorocha gave the statement in Owerri, the Imo State capital, when he addressed a youth delegates from all the geo-political zones in the country, who paid him a courtesy visit.

The Imo state governor also said that, as a child, the north gave him education and secured his future. He said he was born of Igbo patronage, raised by the north and empowered by the west, hence, he needed nothing more than to be a detribalised Nigerian.

Okorocha also said that he is in politics not for personal aggrandisement but for the sheer glory of it and for the reason that he came to serve selflessly.

Chief Rochas Okorocha

According to him, "I will not run in 2019 if President Muhammadu Buhari will be running. Even at that, I will not also run at any given time unless 10 million Nigerians endorse me.

"May I remind all of you that my joy this evening has no bounds for the singular fact that the Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Ijaw, northern minorities, western and eastern minorities, Muslims and Christians and others can sit down in a roundtable and speak like members of one family. If only for this, my mission for this nation is today achieved.

"I am an Igbo man with Igbo parentage. I was born and raised in the north. The north gave me education, guaranteed my childhood, even when I was not worthy to be called anybody in this world.

"I did all my schooling— primary, secondary and tertiary— in the northern part of this country. I finished and needed to be successful and wealthy. My encounter with someone from the South-West gave me the financial empowerment.

"So you can see that in my person, I have no choice whatsoever but to be a detribalized Nigerian, having been born of Igbo parentage, raised up by the North and empowered by the West. Nigeria remains my constituency.

"Most of you may not know that I am not in politics for self-aggrandizement or as a means to seek livelihood. I am in this job for the glory of the job, not for the profit and for the honour of this job, not for the wealth in it.

"I believe that one day it will become a manifest truth that somebody somewhere really cared for this nation.

"In my quiet time have I gone through lamentations, thinking about our nation and particularly. So is the youth of Nigeria, believe me, if our youths are not alright, our nation can never be alright."

Fayemi fails in bid to stop Ekiti judicial panel of inquiry
2:27:43 PMOkogba

An Ado-Ekiti High Court presided over by Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, has refused an application by immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, seeking to restrain the Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up by the state government to probe the finances of the state under his administration.

Fayemi

Dr. Fayemi had approached the court with an application praying the court to restrain the panel from further sitting, pending the hearing of a motion on notice for an injunction on the matter.

Justice Ogunmoye, who gave the ruling on Tuesday, said Fayemi’s request for an interim order could not be granted because the defendants filed a notice of preliminary injunction challenging the competence of the court to hear the substantive suit.

The judge held that there was a pending notice of preliminary objection by the defendants, which was challenging the competence of the court to hear the substantive matter.

He said he had taken a judicial notice of all processes before him, but contended that it had been settled in law what the court considers before granting such application.

However, Justice Ogunmoye granted as the court ruled that the substantive suit would now be taken together with the defendant’s preliminary objection on the next adjourned date.

“I have no power to grant the application for interim injunction before me but justice of the matter demands that it will be given an accelerated hearing. The motion is hereby refused,” he stated.

He adjourned the suit to July 31 for definite hearing.

Fayemi’s counsel, Chief Rafiu Balogun, contended that the court was fair to both parties in granting defendant’s prayer that the application for interim injunction be refused, while at the same time granting his client’s prayer for accelerated hearing of the substantive case.

Defendants’ counsel, Mr. Daniel Alumun, said it was right for the court to consider the peliminary objection saying the claimant can’t stop a statute from running.

The defendants in the suit are the Governor, Attorney General, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Justice Silas Oyewole (chairman of the panel); and members namely: Mr. Gbemiga Adaramola, Mrs. Bolanle Awe, Mr. Idowu Ayenimo, Mr. Omodara Vincent, Mr. Adesoba Oluremi and Mr. Sunday Bamise.
